About
A psychological horror set in a Lovecraftian setting, blending with the cold reality of a military submarine trapped in the depths of the North Atlantic. This story follows ordinary people pushed to the brink of madness as they encounter the unthinkable horrors beneath the waves.
Ancient forces have awakened beneath the ocean, and all contact with the surface is lost. Seek answers at the heart of an apocalypse aboard a nuclear submarine.
Every crew member is more than just an asset. They are human beings, haunted by their own fears and suffering. You have to make hard choice – complete the mission or preserve your humanity.
You are the captain’s right hand. Assign tasks, maintain discipline, and don’t let madness overcome your mind.
Scan the depths with sonar. But remember, not everything in the ocean follows military protocol… Is it another submarine, or something alive?

oh no, that was not good. i loved static dread: the lighthouse, but the submarine totally flails and flops very disappointingly. i'm also very suspicious of some of the other reviews on this game, between the em dashes and calling this game an upgrade or somehow more than the lighthouse; i suspect there's review tampering going on here. if you've played mouthwashing or mole; those games nail what this game was failed to with psychological horror, excruciating tension, and interesting/sympathetic/flawed characters. instead: - the minigames are excruciatingly simple, like we're making among us look like quake here - the narrative repeatedly overwrites itself, not in a unreliable narrator/character way, but as non sequiturs from dialogue to action - the character writing is boring; i feel like most of them started at a solid place, particularly zach and sharon, but any depth is flattened out as even
their mutiny is reduced to eldritch thought invasion
- the cthulu-ish entity's dialogue is garbage, it sounds more like a child making rules during recess than anything meaningful - characters withhold information negligently, and introduce it like an ace attorney case with no punch or comedic effect - the decisions you make are pretty meaningless a bunch of the time; a response to a pretty significant decision was, paraphrasing character dialogue "you can't turn back at this point", to which the player character responds something like "i guess there's no going back now" - the spoilt cherry on top is the characters explaining everything at the end, like a story with no payoff or setup trying to justify anything that happened. - the subtitles and voiceover are not accurate to one another, and at times actively conflict (for example, at one point a character says "can't" but the subtitle reads "can") i don't like writing this review, i really enjoyed the lighthouse but this was...this was rough. i don't think the writing issues are a result of translation issues, i'm very tolerant of grammar errors like that; the actual content and direction of the story is what's bad. the setting also kinda fights the whole lovecraftian/eldritch horror theme in a way that the lighthouse teetered on but, i think, danced around. the lighthouse felt a lot more like someone who doesn't know what's going on trying to do the best they can for all these little vignettes of affected people. it was okay if those characters weren't deep because there was no weird conspiracies, like kelly's family lineage plot (which should be a spoiler but it matters so little you can finish the submarine and still not care) to players, don't buy this. Try MOLE or Mouthwashing if you haven't already, or even static dread: the lighthouse is worth playing. to devs, the lighthouse leaned on what seems to be your strengths as a studio: character vignettes with meaningful decision trees and an almost FNAF-like "protect the base" system. this game leans on your weaknesses: minigames, deep character writing, longform narratives in an eldritch horror context. you've either gotta fight those weaknesses or retarget what works best for your studio and/or your genre. remember, horror, especially eldritch horror, is the fear of the unknown; so don't let me fight the mutated crew like 4 separate times or let your cthulu character explain their motives. i cautiously await your next title.

Unfortunately, this game does not live up to its potential. It feels rushed and unpolished. - There are major and frequent discrepancies between what the voice actors say vs. what's written on screen. - The pacing is all over the place, with characters knowing or accepting facts that have never been brought up beforehand as totally normal and obvious, to the point where I was wondering if I sequence broke the game. - The crew management part is actually fun and interesting, but it becomes mostly irrelevant after the 5th shift. - The minigames range from annoying to downright awful. Whoever designed the hull repair task, please reevaluate your stance on game design.
Also, the crew keeps referring to "Timmy" as a child when his model is that of an adult sailor. Why would a child be part of a submarine crew in the first place?!

Really cool upgrades to this game since Static Dread: The Lighthouse. The voice acting was one of my favorite parts, and the story was fun and engaging! I felt like all my decisions really mattered, which gives it a ton of replayability. Really enjoyed diving back into Lovecraftian worlds again. Can't wait to see more from these devs!
I do not understand how some people who have played the first game can play through this one and say that it's worse. It's a lot better. Mind you, it's a shorter game, but it still costs the price of a couple shwarmas where I live, and maybe even less where you live! The devs have realised that they have to play to their strengths - the mini-games and the different routes. There are mini-games for every action, and despite some of them being a bit tedious (such as the hull repair one), they still are a nice addition and remind me of Dave the Diver, of all things. The different routes are present and are a nice addition. I have played through the game in 4 hours and I want to play it again. I did not want to play The Lighthouse again because it was 7 hours long and I got tired of the game. SPOILERS FOR ONE OF THE ENDINGS: [spolier] I have played the game as a good first mate by following orders and it surprised me by two small fakeouts. The captain and the science officer Kelly are hinted to be suspicious, but this suspicion turns out to be unwarranted since they turn out to be the most devoted crew members who are adamant about defeating the BBEG. BUT even if you follow through with their plan, they still fail and their plan was not nearly enough to win.
The voice acting, the art direction and the cutscenes, the 3D models, the horror sequences are a great addition! That is obviously the reason for the game being shorter, too. The characters are nice and contrary to other reviewers I did care about them because they are simple and likable. The horror sequences existing is nice but they were clearly not the focus of the game, which I understand. If these running horror segments remain in later installments, I hope they get a big glow-up, but as a part of The Submarine they are a nice bonus. The Cthulhu mythos were used a lot better in this one too, as well as this game containing less fanservice and references than the previous one. Despite being used better though, I still got the feeling that the script and the gameplay tried to pull the blanket to themselves. I would think the game would benefit from having slightly more focus. Some things are still hit and miss, and I get it - it's the second game from the devs. For example, the dialogues leave a lot to be desired, it's a bit too on the nose and repeatable - you can hear the word 'Mainframe' to be said about 5-7 times during one dialogue - and it usually revolves around what is at stake right now (which is logical but still), you cannot really talk to the crewmates about themselves and their past a lot. Overall, I will mist likely play the game again since it's shorter than The Lighthouse, and if I do, I will probably update this review. What I would really like to know is if the devs are planning to make more games in the franchise. With this jump in quality I do believe that the Static Dread franchise has potential, but the sales will probably speak louder than reviews.
