Unfortunately, I can't recommend this game in 2021. Honestly, the game is bland, boring and doesn't respect your time. Even if the game is offered for free - don't waste your time. The main issue is that the gameplay itself is boring: most of the time is spent waiting as you are flying somewhere (to or from the mission or exploring). The flight itself doesn't require any input from you, so there is literary nothing for you to do. On top of that the music and graphics are "meh", so there are no beautiful or mysterious space objects to admire, nothing to make the wait more tolerable. There are plenty of other issues too: - all the text (menus, dialogs, etc.) are extremely small, as the graphics were never adjusted for HD resolution (1080p). Tried reducing the resolution, installing mods - it helped a little, but the fonts are still way to small and barely readable (it was probably designed to be played at 1280 x 720 or even lower res). - the plot missions and dialogs are cringe-worthy - ships of different classes feel exactly the same - stations feel dead: just menu options (though this is unfortunately common in many games of this genre today). Would it really be so hard to draw a picture of a place you are visiting and maybe have some active areas on it? I played for 7hr in hopes that it will get better, but it doesn't. I have captured and sold many ships, got new weapons and upgrades, got next class of ship with the best specs - but nothing has changed at all. I normally don't mind playing old/retro games: I replayed star control ur quan masters (and it's still a BLAST!); but this game is not worth playing in 2021. Here are the titles I would recommend instead (this is besides the well known AAA titles): everspace, X3, FTL, Starcom: Nexus, even Rebel Galaxy (both of them), even Battlestation: Harbinger. TLDR: I don't recommend buying it even on discount (or even playing for free). Don't waste your time - play something better

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I loved the first game, but this mess? Just no! The grind is unbelievable and with missions spawning enemies WAY above your level... it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unreal! You have a "26 trooper" ship and missions - even though there are region levels - spawn a way higher level or even if they have about your level, they spawn "40 trooper" and upwards ships; and not 1, but 2, 3 and 4 ships! You die in about 5 seconds. That is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Stay far away from this mess of a game. You have been warned...
Space RPG done well. Don't worry about realism, this game is just fun as it is. The physics is well done, but the Gemini system objects are fixed in space ie. planets don't move. There are lots of interesting "terrain" features in the form of wormholes, riftways (space rivers), radiation zones, lightning zones, etc. There is also lots of space sound, space fire, space debris and space rocks. Combat is basically space tanks. Freighters are available if you want to mine or scavenge. You can build a small fleet and command it in battle. Only con is space flight can get tedious. Space is BIG. No multilplayer, but SG wasn't meant to compete with eve online or any of its derivatives in the multiplayer arena. Lastly, you can ignore the campaign and just play the game factions against each other and space battle forever as good or bad or any level in between depending on your reputation. I have not tired of this yet, although it gets a bit samey after a while. On (Kubuntu) Linux I had to auto-hide my taskbar to get it to work properly in fullscreen. I played around with different proton versions. 10 has worked best for me. SG2 DLC are ok, nothing specially different except a badass ship of your choice. I will review origins once I finish it.
I saw Starpoint Gemini Warlords in Early Access, and was intrigued by it. I played it for a while but it was still very incomplete, so I decided to check out the preceding game (this one) in the meantime. Starpoint Gemini 2 is a pretty good game, and I certainly got my money's worth out of it. The combat is kind of fun, you get a lot of missions to go on and can explore an interesting system. The campaign storyline is decent and worth playing, although I generally prefer to play these types of games in "freelancer" mode. Now that Starpoint Gemini Warlords is completed, I can't think of any reason to buy Starpoint Gemini 2 unless you just want to play through the story. Starpoint Gemini Warlords is a better game across the board, it has everything SG2 does plus a strategic/conquest element which gives it more depth and variety of things to do. If you don't have SGW already, buy that instead. If you do have SGW and enjoyed the story mode of that game, you might want to get this just to play through its story, but there's no other reason to get it. I will point out that one of the free DLC for Starpoint Gemini 2 is "Origins" which includes the story from the original "Starpoint Gemini" so if you want to follow the entire story, SG2 is all you need.
I think this game deserves an honorable mention for having the most useless tutorial I've ever encountered. It felt that the "current monthly expenses" column on the finance screen absolutely needed to have a tutorial window that pops up just to explain that this displays - you guessed it - your current monthly expenses, while failing to warn me about things like the colorful magic space current that's about to sweep me five minutes off course. Or maybe it did, but well after the point where any sensible person gives up and turns it off. But in hindsight, reading about the UI was still more fun than the actual game. You accept a randomly generated mission to destroy some generic enemy, spend a few minutes on autopilot flying there, fight some gunship that's really hard to hit but which poses no threat to you whatsoever, collect some useless trash loot, fly to the nearest space station to sell the loot and get another mission, and repeat. This might have been tolerable if not for the fact that every single mission sends you to fight a single identical gunship. Over and over and over. You can also do cargo transport mission, but that means ten minutes of autopilot for a trivial reward instead and if you need to load a saved game for any reason your cargo disappears. Apparently proper savegames is too much to ask.

Campaign - stalls early on when your basic ship isnt up to surviving the challenges given by the NPCs. No explanation - you just get wiped out. Changing the difficulty level has no impact on this. It takes a long while to gather enough funds to buy a ship half way decent. Changing difficulty level makes NPC's ridiculously easy or very tough. Acquired Missions do not save with save games - you die you have to load and pickup new missions. Really frustrating when you no longer need to have travelled half way across the map ! Mission level does not reflect the level you need to be to do the quest - repair and scan missions can be done at a very high level compared to player level. Assassination quests often spawn "impossible" ships for your level - in short the difficulty scaling is all over the place. Ships - are ugly IMHO - guess I am used to EVE and Elite
Steam tells me I have played this game for 65 minutes. It took several years to rack up that time and 3 attempts to get started. After spending 20 minutes trying to find anything, anything at all the least bit interesting in this game my favorite part is that while overall the control scheme is, if possible, worse than blenders (pre 2.7) At least the ESC key works intuitively and gets you the hell out of that hellish experience.
Playing this game was an exercise in trial, error, and patience. > The majority of the gameplay is spent either running the same missions over and over again or shuttling countless loads of cargo back and forth in the hope of slowly saving up enough money for a decent ship and some weapons. > The main story is bland and repetitive, with characters that range from uninteresting to stereotypically annoying. The voice acting is interesting at first, but it soon becomes clear that they spent more time on perfecting their accents than on making the lines flow naturally; you can tell that each line was read and recited out of context, as characters will have tone and inflection that are over-exaggerated and/or out of place in the scene. > Gameplay is buggy and unpolished: - Aiming and firing is finicky so you have to rely on automatic targeting, especially during story missions. - Enemy ships will occasionally become locked in a state of 0 health but not destroyed; if they are mission-critical targets, this will make you fail the mission. - I routinely wound up with my health displayed as "-2,000,000,000 / 20,000" when flying through high-radiation areas. Good game concept, bit sloppy execution. I recommend Endless Sky instead; it's free and much less annoying.
