not even much of a spongebob fan, i just like 3d platformers. surprisingly well designed and engaging for what is basically a 6th gen licenced game. this remake is pretty close to the og game so if you don't have a gamecube or ps2 or don't have it in you to emulate it then this should do the trick fine. for the most part the game feels kind of like a mario odyssey and mario 64 love child. you go into levels, go through their linear tasks that span the whole area and collect stuff, and maybe along the way get some optional stuff you need to progress. the game isn't too difficult and tends to be very accessible, plenty of tutorials to help new players get themselves together. will say i wish the spatula requirements for the final boss was a teensy bit lower. 75 is basically nearly every spatula so even just 70 spatulas would've been a bit more preferable. levels are generally fun unless it's kelp forest and maybe rock bottom if i'm in a bad mood. early levels are generally easier but the mid and late game have plenty of great levels. also, hot take, the mermalair ball challenge is overhated and i would argue is painfully fine rather than the worst thing since cheese that tastes like vomit. this will probably hit a lot harder if you liked the show growing up but if you didn't then this will still satiate you. i'm not even into spongebob, like i said, but i can still feel a lot of the referential love and charm put into this entire game from start to end. the cult classic label is deserved, it's very fun.
