I backed this on Kickstarter and have finally had a little bit of time to play. It's okay and there are things I really enjoy and other things that make me hesitant to recommend. I am a casual player of this so I haven't made it to endgame yet. First, the good: I like how you can respec your character so easily and try new builds. I like how it's mostly simply and easy to play. The music and graphics are fun, and there is a wide variety of classes to play. I haven't run into any issues with people kill-stealing or being unable to find a spot to grind mobs. I also like how you can play on any server and still use your characters. Now, the bad: The servers are not great. Despite having 80-100 ping, the game feels like it perpetually has high latency. I understand this is a new MMO, but I thought this issue would be solved by now. Additionally, there have been numerous updates that have broke features of the game, like the trading. I don't know the story behind it, but it seems like developers are not fully testing each patch and hotfix. As a result of this, my character, who has been playing since launch day, is unable to purchase items from vendors due to me being a "new character" and not having enough playtime. It's frustrating. The next problem is there is zero new player guidance. You start in a city square with no information, you're just left to figure it out. There's no guidance on where to go for class upgrades, where to put your stats, and zero quests or NPC dialog at all really. There are upgrade NPCs but they don't properly explain what each NPC does or how the upgrades will affect your toon. Lastly, the maps are large and don't have defining features. There's usually an crafter NPC on each map (you can use the drops from mobs to make items) and a warp point so you can easily come back to the map, but that's it. Sometimes there are miscellaneous props on each map (such as a sword in a stone, temple doorway, military camp, etc), but you can't interact with them so they may as well be boxes or trees or other type of visual clutter. Overall, I'd give it a 6/10 for now, which to me is a recommend with a huge asterisk. If you like mob-grinder type games, you may like this but be aware that it's rough around the edges. I hope the developers can use Early Access to polish up a lot of these problems and make the game more enjoyable.

Full disclosure: I received this game through a Twitch stream for free, however I have since felt compelled to spend money on the in game store to support the developers because this is a little underrated gem. Spiritvale's cutesy artstyle does not take away from what is otherwise a very oldschool MMORPG experience. There is no story (yet), you just have your respective class, with a sprinkle of the holy trinity for endgame content, and you play the game to power up your character and farm different equipment combos. PROs: Speaking of equipment, Spiritvale has a huge diverse set of different gear pieces which can be meshed together to create unique builds. Currently some are more popular than others but due to the combination of armours, set bonuses, cards (mob/boss drops that have unique traits you can slot into gear), a runes/artefact system and gems (for augmenting your runes/artefacts to boost the power of your class main skills). A lot of thought and care has obviously gone into each of these, and combining them in different ways makes the game stand out in its versatility for theorycrafting. There is a detailed refining system for several aspects of the gear (which could do with some clearer explanations) including a gamba (in game currency only) refining system, a RNG based trait rolling system that uses gems you collect from mob drops and more. The complexity is surprising to me for a game of this art style as I had at first assumed it to be more "chill" but you can sweat lord this system if you wish to minmax your characters. Whilst compact, the maps of Spiritvale feel unique to one another, while the mobs can sometimes feel repetitive in the late game they each have different strengths, weaknesses and types (poison/holy/ghost/shadow/water/fire etc) which correspond to your own abilities, card choices and skillsets. Instancing is used to help try and avoid too much congestion on maps and the developers constantly tinker with this to achieve the right balance. There is a cosmetic store, but the items are purely cosmetic rather than P2W. The only elements you may consider P2W are the mounts for movement speed (though you can farm a small amount of mounts in the game) and pets (which are more common than mounts, but essential for auto loot and helpful in the early game). Otherwise I look forward to seeing what art designs are put into the game in the future to help encourage financial support for the game beyond it's one time purchase price. Bosses also have unique skill sets to one another, though due to their disproportionate strength you will often be one tapped by them. The encouragement here is to assemble a party to take on the boss, of which you can have up to 12 members and party participation is encouraged by both EXP and loot drop rate success. Classes definitely feel unique to one another, but it should be noted the typical "tank" or "healer" tropes of being too weak to solo dev do not apply in this game. Cons: There is a big botting problem in this game currently, devs have signposted they plan on working on this, but it should be noted there is some quite obvious botting going on. The reporting system for this is clunky, as you have to report it via discord ticket - I think the game would benefit from an in game report system so that GMs can review cases and take auction quicker. The review period for bot reports also seems to be quite long, but conversely there are bot hunters moving around the game to try and mitigate this issue. Currently however, it remains unresolved. Server lag and instability remains a challenge, whilst it has significantly improved from the initial launch, you still can get propelled into a grey/blue screen when changing maps from time to time, there are some noticeable stutters when casting skills, especially around other players with flashy skills, and currently no way to turn that down. Several hotfixes have been deployed and this is something the devs are working hard to improve. Auction House/Trade/Guild duping/RMT has been a known issue since the initial release of the game. Rumours quickly circulated of rare items being duplicated, and this was compounded by the action house and trade overloading the infrastructure the game was running on. Subsequently, there is no trade or auction in the game at the time of this review as it has been taken offline. Devs have been working to remove duplicated items and to rebuild the architecture behind the auction house, so I am optimistic that this will improve and be up and running soon. It should also be commended that despite this, you can still farm everything in this game yourself if you're prepared to grind. The party menus are currently bugged, causing previous parties you've joined to pop up or make you rejoin them upon changing instance or reloading the game. This results in a frustrating house keeping exercise of leaving them before you can join another party. It is a minor non game breaking bug, but honestly the one i've noticed the most as having a real terms detriment to my gameplay, so I hope this is fixed soon. Conclusions: While the game is not without some quirks, I think it is genuinely worth its asking price - the developers are responsive and actively working to fix the challenges this game has at this stage of early access, and if my 100+ hours of gameplay didn't speak for themselves, I obviously enjoy playing. There is a roadmap on their discord which outlines the plans for this game, and if successfully implemented then this could put the game in a strong position compared to its P2W heavy competitors in the MMORPG market. On balance, whilst there are some things that definitely need to be fixed, I would still recommend this game.
Pretty fun mob grinder. Gameplay essentially amounts to building to kite loads of mobs in a train and nuking them all for big drops. Itemisation is fairly basic but varied enough to be fun, build options are sufficient- The class I picked (Priest) has multiple build paths. While this is a grind game, the grind is pretty quick compared to other titles in the genre. The feedback loop of kills>loot>exp is pretty speedy. Some serious issues at launch, hence the negative reviews, but we have seen many, many updates since then. Dev is clearly working hard to resolve the issues. They aren't all fixed- Party system's still got a bug where you keep appearing in parties you've left, until you zone back into the one where you joined. HOWEVER, lag situation is mostly resolved. There's significant promise here, and there's game to play. Buy if you're a looter fan, enjoy a little bit of mindless grind, and like theorycrafting builds.
