Spelunky is fantastic, this has quickly become one of my favourite recently played series. I'm going back to this game from Spelunky 2 to scratch more of the itch, and it holds up although it's comparatively simpler and less polished. There's still plenty to do and rock-solid core gameplay that makes it a valid option as the more affordable entry point- at least for the single player! Consider skipping straight to Spelunky 2 if you're mainly interested in the multiplayer, where the quality of life makes a big difference.

Gameplay is setup for both casual and competitive/serious gamers to enjoy. There are so many fun things to encounter and unlock as you learn to survive the random level layouts. The game never seems to get boring, with plenty to unlock and challenge yourself with. The soundtrack is one of my favorites from recent games and is tailored to fit the gameplay for each area.
