THAT is what i call a good story action game. Meaningful, really. All players who finished the game will agree with me on the fact that this game turns a switch on in your brain.

Hey kiddo, Handsome Jack here... and I just played Spec Ops: The Line, and honestly, I have to say, this game is a little rude. I went in expecting a perfectly normal military shooter. You know, guns, explosions, handsome soldiers doing handsome soldier things. Instead, the game spends several hours making you feel increasingly terrible about every decision you make. Excuse me? I didn't sign up for emotional consequences. I have a company to run. You play as Captain Walker, who takes his squad into Dubai because apparently the military looked at a completely destroyed city buried under sand and thought, “Yeah, let's send three guys in there.” Fantastic planning. Very professional. And naturally, everything goes horribly wrong. You start out thinking you're the hero, then slowly realize you're making things worse, and eventually you're staring at the screen wondering whether the game is actually judging you. Which is incredibly unfair. I'm a CEO, kiddo. I make decisions all the time. Sometimes people die. That's called business. The shooting itself is pretty solid. You shoot soldiers, throw grenades, use cover, and do all the standard military shooter stuff. But the game keeps putting these horrible situations in front of you and asking you to make choices. And every time you're thinking, “Surely this can't get any worse.” Oh, it can. It absolutely can. And then there's the white phosphorus scene. Yeah. That one. I'm not going to spoil it, but let's just say the game takes the standard military videogame formula of “press button to make explosion” and suddenly makes you feel like the worst person alive for pressing the button. That's impressive. Also extremely annoying. I was having fun shooting people and suddenly the game decided I needed a lesson in morality. Who authorized this? The story is probably the strongest part of the whole thing. It starts like a fairly standard military adventure and slowly turns into something much darker. The game keeps messing with your expectations, your perception of what's happening, and even your understanding of what you're doing. By the end, you're not really asking, “Did I win?” You're asking: “What the hell did I just do?” And honestly, kiddo, that's pretty good storytelling. It's not perfect. The gameplay can get repetitive, the AI isn't exactly winning employee of the month, and sometimes the shooting feels like it's just there to get you from one horrible story moment to the next. But the atmosphere, writing, and psychological stuff are genuinely memorable. So yeah, I'd give Spec Ops: The Line a 9/10. Not because it's the greatest shooter ever made. Because it has the audacity to take a genre built around making you feel like an unstoppable badass and ask you whether you should feel good about any of it. And I don't appreciate being questioned. I'm handsome. I'm successful. I make excellent decisions. The game is obviously wrong.
