Personnages profonds, même les baddies sont appréciables L'ambiance, les décors, les musiques! Tout est top. Et pour une fois l'héroïne n'est pas sexualisée
South of Midnight: a beautiful game with terrific heart from start to finish. We don't get too many games about the Deep South from any perspective, let alone a Black one, so it's most welcome. I say this as a 52 year old white man who's lived most of his life here in the South. Racism has no place in our world. The game is a mix of 3rd person platforming, combat and collectibles, where you guide Hazel to solve various paranormal mysteries in her community Prospero. The formula is nothing new, but the execution is top notch and the world building is cohesive and complete. Hazel is an excellent protagonist, and her journey has a satisfying conclusion that isn't an emotional gotcha or an attempt to oh-so-cleverly subvert expectations and stifle joy. It's a journey worth taking alongside Hazel, who comes of age and comes into an understanding of her power by the end. The crossroads with Orisha names in Ch. 12 was an excellent and authentic touch. Props to the original system of magic & cosmology that's firmly rooted in Southern magickal traditions. That Roux is one smooth talker... couldn't believe it's the same voice behind Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) but it's true. Respect, Mr. Best. The Magician's plans all come to fruition in the end, and everything weaves together. We travel through grief to reach peace and a happy ending.

Gameplay-wise, it's a run-of-the-mill, albeit quite polished and well-made, third-person platforming, hack & slash, adventure game. Think Kena: Bridge of Spirits, if you're familiar with it, minus the souls-like stuff. What makes this game unique, standout, and awesome though, is the sadly underutilised, gorgeous Southern Gothic horror setting, and drenched in style (Hazel's main outfit is the coolest s**t). Then there's the perfectly executed stop-motion, clay puppet-style animation and models. However, to me, the biggest standout of the game is its soundtrack and sound design. I want to say it's the best I've ever experienced. The way it all fits together: the soft, haunting, powerful vocal sounds Hazel's abilities create; the double-jump, dash, float, and spells, all matching and blending in with the game's OST vocals, while contrasting the crude, unpleasant sounds enemies make and the darker musical tones that kick in when they're around. So, while the gameplay itself is very familiar territory, everything else is what makes this game a must-play, IMHO.
Una aventura que recuerda a grandes títulos como "Alice Madness Returns". El apartado artístico y musical son impecables. Dentro de tu aventura sureña podrás disfrutar de plataformas, exploración y combates empleando tus habilidades. Totalmente recomendado.
I loved this game so much! It was just enough challenge for me not to get frustrated, the soundtrack is one of my favorites and the story was CHEFS KISS!
We need more games like South of Midnight.
The PS1 and PS2 eras were filled with amazing and unique games. This game like one of this games has a straightforward action platformer gameplay with a astonishing visual style, stunning music, and touching stories. If you're a fan of good old games like Psychonauts or appreciate modern Kena and the games of Josef Fares (It takes two, Split/Fiction), then give this game a try. And if you liked this one, try the games above if you haven't already.
This game is highly inspired by southern folklore and the like. I really enjoyed my time with it, and recommend it to anyone interested in the culture. I do have some gripes with the game, mainly on how the nose it is on some of its stories. The ending for bunny is also kinda lack luster, but its still enjoyable for its core themes. 7/10
One of the best games ive played! Atmosphere and landscape is gorgeous and the story is not only beautiful but amazingly paced! Nothing feels rushed or like it drags on, which is a hard thing to manage sometimes. The character designs are utterly gorgeous and I like the range of biomes and diversity in nature, just beautiful
