Reviews
Skullgirls is genuinely a great game. The music is an absolute jam, gameplay is enjoyable, the humor is lovely, characters are fun in every way, and the art is beautiful. This is one of the biggest vibes I've had the pleasure of experiencing in a fighting game. If you like jazz, 2d fighting games, and don't shudder at the sight of a woman, give Skullgirls a try. The only reason I leave a negative review is because of censorship, followed by a lack of foreseeable support. After the original dev team broke apart due to horrendous management following the attempted removal of the lead designer, Hidden Variable Studios & Future Club were to take control of Skullgirls and keep it afloat. These new devs added additional paid characters to play as, but proceeded to censor content that has been in the game since a decade before. Various references to and depictions of sexual content, race, and fascism were removed in 2015 (following the rebranding of Skullgirls as 2nd Encore) & 2023. In 2015, some animations were changed to obstruct visible panties, and Lab Zero Games promised no more censorship afterwards. In 2020, ownership changed. In 2023, the game was censored as a whole. Some of these changes took form in sprite & art alterations: changing the colors of undergarments, removing a comb from an Italian character's head because her burst animation turned her hair into an afro (this was in the name of removing racial stereotypes, but her brown clone still has the comb for some reason), replacing Valentine's cross imagery with shurikens (blame the actual Red Cross organization for this, since they copyrighted the medical symbol we all grew up with) ,and removing Nazi symbolism from the Black Egrets (the villains). Much of the art from the downloadable artbook was removed in line with updates made to the game itself. In terms of actual content, multiple voice lines, voice packs, & lines were removed; some were sex jokes while others were references to other games, the story, or the community (two examples are the "Barely Legal" 18-hit combo rating, and Big Band's "Cheen" line from his voice pack). Story panels related to the police brutality & sexual assault suffered by Big Band & Filia, respectively, were removed entirely. Gallery art was altered in the same way as all the other changes. The only way to experience the game with its original story and art is to download a pre-censorship patch and replace your game files. Or you can got to Properties -> Game Versions & Betas -> entercode 'ireallyfearchange' and select that build from 2016. Development for this game has also ceased in the wake of legal disputes between the devs & publisher, forgoing future content additions and leaving the censorship as is, unless the development team(s) shift again. Online play still works, though, so its worth buying if you want to play with a friend on another computer. My only other complaint is that the men aren't as sexualized as the women. GIVE ME EQUALITY DAMNIT!

Every market we collect.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

They pulled some strings to get that "off-topic review" activity flagged back when they retroactively censored a bunch of story elements in this game. Very much related to the actual game. So the score you see for this game is missing about 5k negative reviews.
What really crossed the line for me was seeing content that had been promised and in some cases already delivered later walked back and removed. Taking something away from players after the fact and then dismissing their concerns is just not okay in my book. At its core, the game is still fun. It looks great, has a ton of content, and a surprisingly broad story for a fighting game. If you enjoy the gameplay loop, you could easily sink countless hours into it. None of that is the problem. The issue started after the original creators were pushed out and a new team took over. From that point on, it felt like the game’s identity began to change. Long standing elements were suddenly reinterpreted as inappropriate, with content altered or removed in ways that actively made things worse rather than more tasteful. This is especially frustrating because the game was designed with that tone and style from the very beginning it wasn’t added later, it was the game. What makes it harder to swallow is the inconsistency. Certain things are censored or changed in game, while similar or more explicit material is openly endorsed elsewhere. It comes across as performative rather than principled, and it leaves the impression that decisions are being made to appease social pressure instead of respecting the original vision or the existing fanbase. You can support inclusivity without rewriting history or talking down to your own players. Trying to please everyone while ignoring the people who were already there just ends up alienating both sides. I still think the game itself is strong, but the way it’s been handled post handover leaves a bad taste. The controversy didn’t have to happen it was entirely avoidable.
If you ever feel pathetic know Hidden Variable removed all what they deemed as offensive themes from the cartoon funky fighting game.
Game is pretty and fun, but the balancing around certain characters being played as solo is not good at all. I feel like the game is clearly centered around tag team mechanics above all else and forgets about the promise of viable solo play which is kinda sad for someone like me that just wants to play with one single character and said character can't stand itself without assists. Also censorship is bad for preservation of games, art and media, don't let things become lost media for no justifiable reasons or for ideological reasons, even if the censorship in this case wasn't that blatant or oppressive to the point of hindering the enjoyment of the game
Sleazy weasels. Pulled the "off-topic reviews" card as a way to deceptively hide the negative reviews for their poor business and ethical practice, deliberately disrespecting the original material. Showing their character indeed.
Played for so long just to have the current team destroy everything I had come to love about the game.
I am ideologically opposed to the developer's agenda. Game was purchased long before i cared
Es muy buen juego, el único problema que tengo es que cuando los personajes femeninos ganan no se encueran para celebrar.
I wish I could recommend this game, but updates have stopped, and the only people who still play the game are super high skill. As a new or mediocre player you will NOT find anyone online with your skill level. its is a shame since the art style, music, and overall gameplay is great, the game has simply run its course.
