A beautiful game that I think needs to better advertise or showcase what the gameplay is actually like on the store page. Visually, sonically, and mechanically this is an awesome game. Props to the developers(or developer?) for this style. But man do you hardly get to do what the game showcases, skating. I feel a lot of people who would be excited about buying a skating game generally are people who enjoy flow games like anything grind fiction or Wipeout, Skate, etc... And that is kind of how the game looks in the storefront/trailers. I will tell you, you get to skate like half of the time in this game. The whole time I played I was frustratingly waiting for the next time I'd be able to go fast, be challenged, and skate. The rest of the time is spent walking around interacting with objects/entities, clicking through dialog(a lot of it) and doing menial tasks to further the story. The game has solid mechanics and is really fun when you finally get to a part where you skate fast through portals and have to avoid crashing and shattering into pieces. In my 4 hours playing that was only about 5% of the time I would say. The rest of the time is spent doing silly things like fetching objects that wont let you capture them unless you do x skate challenge. The skate challenges and boss battles are incredibly boring. Many of them are just do x amount of tricks in a combo over this area. The last boss battle I did you had to defeat giant scorpions and you defeat them by doing trick combos underneath them. A trick combo is simply you just pushing L1/L2 or R1/R2 along with B for ollie. It's brutally easy and the vast majority of the time you actually get to skate it's doing this simple challenges or boss battles. It just feels silly, easy, repetitive, and cheap. One would think well then it's all about the story, and you may be right. For me the story is okay. It's charming at least, I wouldnt say captivating. A good game to play maybe if you're depressed or going through a thing, it's comfy. But past like hour 3 I found myself just skipping through the dialog because I was uninterested. After about 4 hours total I quit. I came to terms that this game isnt what I thought it was and I'm just going to have to go through an hour of silly tasks/missions just to do a silly easy boss battle to maybe just maybe have a fun challenging skate section.
This game touched my soul in a way I never expected. I adore skate story with my whole heart. If you're ever looking for a recommend, This will be near the top of my list.
Genuinely one of the worst controls I’ve ever played. It’s unfortunate cuz the visuals and music are great, but the steering is awful. A cargo ship steers better than the character in this game
UNPOPULAR OPINION This game isn't for combo makers who want to enjoy sharp turns and sick tricks. It is more visual & artistic rather than mechanic enjoyment. Since I am not a fan of satanic symbolism (eyes, following rabbit, contracts, baphomet star, eating six moons), it annoyed me enough to request a refund. I admire the work put into the game but game mechanics were sloppy. I was expecting a THPS-like game but it was not.
It was a beautiful ride. I haven't played a game this artistically striking and cohesive since Journey, but this game has the bonus of also being the best skateboarding game I've ever played. The weight, feeling, and most importantly friction of it is just miles ahead of the more arcade-y skating games like Tony Hawk/ Skate. Because of that friction the catharsis of mastering the mechanics is so much higher. This makes those moments where you're nailing high risk combos while flying down a slope at 30+ mph to the incredible art and visuals a borderline spiritual experience. For $20 it's worth EVERY penny if you're even remotely interested in skateboarding or artistic A/V experiences.
