About

“Onii-chan, you really are a lonely person.”
“Did you lose faith in me?”
“No. I love you, onii-chan.”
Unable to bear the ugliness of the world and terrified of other people, the protagonist develops the ability to read minds.
He shuts himself away and submits a light novel he wrote, which unexpectedly wins a newcomer’s award. But the jealousy and envy that follow only deepen his distrust of the few human relationships he still has. Those around him hurt his fragile heart without even realizing it.
His only remaining comfort is his younger sister, who lives with him.
Clinging to each other just to stay alive, the two sink night after night into a twisted, unhealthy codependency.
―I keep living alone, talking about my own prejudices and cursing the world. Day after day.
I ripped off Dostoevsky, half-assed it into something modern, and turned it into a light-novels.
I mean, I tried. In my own stupid way.
Had the heroines talk about “existentialism” like it was supposed to mean something.
The gameplay is an old-school, straight-up classic visual novel. The text fills the entire screen, so read as much as you want—or just right-click to hide it and enjoy the art. That’s it. Read, click, and vibe.
Live through a gloomy, suffocating real world through an overly sensitive protagonist… then come home and savor the only happiness left in his life: the time he spends with his little sister, his one true comfort.
As the friction with the people around you keeps piling up, there’ll be moments when their petty thoughts make you feel actual murderous rage. And in those moments, you can use your mind-reading ability to drive them to suicide.
That snide bastard. That arrogant asshole. Hit them right where it hurts—right in the deep-seated insecurities they never want anyone to see—and take them out. It’s not like you’re killing them with your own hands, so you won’t get caught. The ones truly at fault are the tasteless, mindless conformists who do nothing but obey society without a shred of aesthetic sense.
…But is that really okay?
What is happiness, anyway?
And in the end—what kind of future will the protagonist and his sister walk into?
Witness it with your own eyes.

I can tell this will get wordy so I'll write a short and a long review. Short review: Unless you have read Notes From Underground or are familiar with the author (nyalra) you won't know what to expect. This is a story marked by a horrifyingly unbearable psychological specificity. Its greatest strength is to look at the human condition and dissect it inhumanly to study it through a cold-yet spiteful scientific lens. I'd say it's a case study of the human condition more than anything and it requires you, the reader, to put some effort into engaging with the content in order for it to have any value. Long review: The base of this book is the novel Notes From Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and this inspiration seeps through every line of the protagonist. You obviously don't have to read the book that inspired it before playing Sister Other Paranoia, but the way you approach the contents of this VN is very similar to how you would judge Dostoyevsky's book. Having read Notes myself and having a certain degree of familiarity with nyalra's work, you may think I am in a rather privileged position to engage with this VN, but I will say that going into this with zero outside context would be a very impactful experience too. If you like Sister Other Paranoia, you should read the novel that inspired it and have fun connecting the dots. So, with that long preface, how do I fair Sister Other Paranoia? It's a story about a young man troubled with the illness of hyper-consciousness (as the Underground Man would frame it). His acute perception of the real world leads him to a clinical diagnosis of the rot hidden behind every human interaction, which turns him into an expert of human nature, but a miserable being that cannot fully be a human himself. You're not supposed to find him likeable, for he does not fight against this predicament, but rather rationalizes his way into accepting it. Yet, the brilliance of the story lies in the ways he can make incisive remarks about human behavior despite being a misanthropic loner that no one would want to be like. It's almost poetic how only that kind of person, so detached from the rest of society, can learn these things. And you might in turn learn one thing or another from him. As you can see, it's a story meant for the lovers of literature and enthusiasts of the weird. Ultimately, I think if you have ever felt like you are a lonely person you will relate with the story in some way or another. But, as said in the short review, to find meaning and beauty in this disturbing story you will have to be willing to engage with it. And I must say, the psychological specificity of this story truly is something to behold, especially as it explores the current internet society and how it has reshaped human interaction and behavior. It's a great work, sometimes I think it suffers from the language getting too straightforward instead of letting each person assimilate the metaphor in their own personal way. It's not a story that you can recommend to anyone and not have many of them not get it or feel discomfort over being called out. But other than that it's undoubtedly a great work.

There has been a lot of criticism about the game focusing so much on the misanthropic protagonist and how little we see of his sister. Let me be clear, that is true, The sister mainly just shows up as levity from the vignettes of his relationships. However I still think this game is compelling when you realize this game is about Nyarla’s paranoia about following up Needy Streamer Overload. It’s about a guy in college who published a light novel and won the debut prize and now he is puzzled on what to write next. There is even a relationship with a girl who is a fan of his work which I found to be the most compelling thing about this VN besides his sister. I think this branch of the story represents Nyarla’s hesitancy to engage with the Jirai Kei movement and his female fans loving Needy Streamer Overload and if the end of this branch of him crossing the line means anything between the lines, I like to think he ♥♥♥♥♥♥ one of his female fans. Good ♥♥♥♥ Nyarla. I will say the ending kindof was like “that’s it?” But there’s also a moment where I loudly yearned “ME AND WHO?!”. So I would say the game lands the ending. I do think this game would be 69 times better if it depicted him ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ his female fans and his sister, but I think Nyarla watered the story down so it could be published on steam because anything depicting the anime style and sex gets ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over by steam constantly and it probably wouldn’t have made as much money on FAKKU or JAST. A shame because it has really strong character designs. The music is also really good. Anywho if you are interested in Nyarla as a writer and like Needy Streamer Overload and got 4 hours to kill its cheap so I would recommend it.

It was fun to play, the stories were interesting, love the art, love the psychosis.
I love my little sister.
