Would you enjoy Monster Hunter if the monsters ran away after 2 seconds of fighting and 90% of the hunt was just chasing them across the map? And when you do get to finally fight the monster for real it's about the most obnoxious thing possible? Then boy is this game for you!
It's crazy to me that so many people disliked this game. If Sanctuary is a 9/10, then Sacrifice is at least a 7 or 8. I also wonder if Sanctuary would have been received as favorably if it released in 2022, at a time when the market was
and it still is
saturated with rollslop. It's true that this game's level design suffers to a degree in order to accommodate the mage hunts, but I would argue that this is balanced out by the mages themselves offering a diverse challenge along with some emergent gameplay due to the variations in routes and minion spawning, to say nothing of the multi-mage free-for-alls. The mage-free DLC definitely feels closer to Sanctuary and was more well-received from what I can see, but I still would have preferred a DLC-exclusive mage or three. I think another factor contributing to this game's lower scores is the fact that it's a little harder than its predecessor. The juggling that people complained about was pretty much removed in a very early patch, but I guess people miss overpowered two-handers and one-shot magic spells and such. If anything, my main gripe with this game is that the patches made it too easy by removing stamina management, mages fully healing when you die, spellmark lowering your max HP, etc. (the juggles were pretty funny, too, tbh.) I played two characters on the unpatched day zero version and had significantly more fun, but missed the multiplayer. The multiplayer system is ambitious and wonderfully realized (aside from having to sit in the portal during multiplayer matchmaking in the hub area.) Huge props for implementing crossplay, as well. I'm still getting some fun sessions in on the weekends. I feel pretty bad for Ska/Devoured studios for having their game dragged so badly when they made IMO a strong effort to innovate and iterate on their previous game. I hope that their next game doesn't end up as a textureless, formulaic sigh as a result. Give Salt and Sacrifice a fair try, and play Sanctuary and the rest of the Ska Studio catalogue too, if you haven't already!

devs ruined tight game play and mechanics of previous game. repetitive game play due to the mage system. best bosses are the non mages whom are not the main focus.
Ultra annoying game, no good bosses, grind. If you are fan of previous game dont play this abomination
she salt on my sanctuary till i sacrifice
A tremendous disappointment from Ska studios. They can do better than this. The atmosphere is gone, the mage hunt nonsense is repetitive, and the boss fights are massively dumbed down from Sanctuary. You'll spend most of your time chasing mages in circles around the map as they constantly teleport away from you when they get hit. I can't even imagine what the thought process was that ended up with "boss fights" being almost entirely about chasing teleporting enemies around, it is as bad as it sounds.
MAGE SYSTEM: terribly boring, you clear half the area just to run into a mage statue which then respawns everything and on top of that you have to chase the mage back through all the ♥♥♥♥ you already traversed.... boring as hell. MAP: idk how they went from a nice simple map design to a map that looks like something i would've made on Minecraft when i was 11. platformer map design with a million different directions to go, and have fun remembering which way you've already gone because there's no map to view. ENEMY SPAWNS: After each mage alter you activate and complete that mage will now randomly spawn around the map, so after you've done 3 to 5 alters you can imagine how annoying it would be to have to run around the map full of trash mobs (too many imo) but also have to deal with mages stacked on top of each other all spamming a bunch of corny ♥♥♥♥ that will 2 tap you. ITEM DROPS: killing trash mobs is basically pointless because all the important items come from farming mages so you end up running past all the trash mobs for that reason and the fact that you know damn well you're going to run into a mage alter and have to kill them all again. COMBAT: this is one of the areas where i think they did a great job updating but its pointless because everything you fight spams the same 3 things with not enough down time to really get off any combos so you're basically playing it with the same simplicity as their first game. BOSS FIGHTS: spam roll while they spam attack WEAPONS: i actually own this game on epic and ended up buying it again on steam to give it another chance because the amount of weapon selection is way better than their previous game. if you're going to play this game you definitely want to play it with a friend, it will make it a lot easier to forget about all the cancerous ♥♥♥♥ they did to the game.
