About
Disclaimer: Rhell: Warped Worlds & Troubled Times is designed for 4:3 to relive the 2003 GameCube nostalgia, but play however feels right to you!
Rhell: Warped Worlds & Troubled Times is a semi-open world puzzle adventure where you play as a loud-mouthed, hot-headed mage trying to figure out why everyone has disappeared. With 40 magical runes to combine however you want, every challenge is an opportunity to create your own solution.
You start with 4 runes and collect more as you explore the world of Rhell, using up to 5 of these in whatever combination you please to solve different puzzles. Want to hold down 2 buttons, but you’ve only got yourself? Duplicate yourself and turn your copy into a puddle that permanently holds the switch down. Need a vehicle in a quick fix? Cast Life on a rock and use it as your pet car! Whatever the combination, whatever the solution, the magic is yours to master.
Everyone has vanished except 12 people, leaving behind empty towns and unanswered questions. As Rhell, a sharp-tongued mage, you explore forgotten ruins filled with ancient secrets, decode mysterious fragments left behind by those who came before, and slowly piece together what really caused this catastrophe. The few remaining inhabitants have their theories, but you might find a truth far stranger than anyone suspected. What started as a simple mystery becomes something that challenges everything you thought you knew.
Wander through 9 distinct areas at your own pace - from flooded libraries and underwater cities to volcanic factories and crystal caves. Each location tells its own story through environmental details and hidden lore, along with characters that have their own mysteries to unravel. Some areas connect in unexpected ways, rewarding those who explore thoroughly. The world doesn't just contain puzzles, it is a puzzle - one that reveals more of itself the deeper you dig. Whether you're following the main plot or getting side-tracked by a curious detail, there's always another secret waiting just around the corner.
If you choose to help the people you meet along your journey, you might see Rhell's character develop. Help the lonely characters and watch her soften into someone who genuinely cares. Ignore them entirely and she'll stay the blunt, loud-mouthed mage she started as. With multiple endings to discover, let your curiosity and kindness (or lack thereof) lead you.
40 magical runes creating millions of spell combinations (102,400,000 to be exact!)

Might be the best game I've played so far to come out in 2026? How has this game not blown up?! It just very impressive, even more impressive to learn it was made by just one person. The game not only has some meat to it, it is has a beating heart as well. The artstyle and camera style (while frustrating at times) makes it charm that genuinley feels like a lost Nintendo game on the Gamecube. It has the design sensibilites of one, minus the nagging desire to hold your hand like a child, encouraging you to experiment with the game's endless mechanics and explore its many varied environments. Gameplay wise, people have compared it to "immersive sims" like Deus Ex or Noita, I would say it is closer (and more inspired by) the likes of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (both of which I would also consider "immersive sims" too) based on some of the powers such as the rewind feature. However, I have seen it said that spiritually the closest comparison would probably be Scribblenauts - a series I have been interested in but have not played myself. But feels the most apt. Because coming up with your own combination of spells to solve it in your own roundabout way is the entire charm of this game. Especially early on when your spells are limited and you really have to get creative. In one instance I had a decoy and bouncy gel, and I wanted to get up to a high spot to grab a shiny that was taunting me. I made decoys make decoys of itself so it started propping themselves into a tower. Then I somehow managed to get myself and a part of the floor and the decoys covered in bouncy gel. Since two bouncy gel objects bouncing on eachother add momentum to eachother exponentially, the decoys and I were jumping so high we were hitting the ceiling. It then was just a matter of attempting to land on the high point. I was laughing maniacally the entire time. Many such moments are like this. You'd think that once you get more spellsm especially some of the late game spells that are extremely impressive, things get easier and more predictable, with solutions being overcome with your own quick trick spell you came up with. In the mid game? maybe sometimes. But late game there are some really impressively tricky puzzles that beg you to break the game. They have taken their time to craft puzzles that consider the player's vast capabilities and challenge them. I have mentioned before, there are an impressive number of puzzles and areas in this game that is filled with secrets and goodies to find. The stuff you find are very rewarding: New spells, cash to unlock new spells, items and abilities, story items, and slots to save spell combinations in. I have seen people complain that they hate having to open the book all the time to combine spells, and seem to wish that saved spells should be in the game to begin with. I disagree, Friction is good, and I applaud the balls to put these behind exploration, and making you consider your spell selection. It becomes less of a hassle as you go on, and it honestly doesn't bother me. The game's artstyle has a very cozy vibe, and that does extend to its story and characters, One of the first characters you talk to is the empress, who charges you with your quest. Except, in its hilarious subversive manner, the empress is naught but the empress of a crumbled castle with no power, and the empress herself is not authoratative but submissive and passive, merely suggesting that, given you don't know what to do, you could try and do this quest to figure out what's going on. But oh, you don't actually have to, forgive my insolence, my sincere apologies, you can do whatever it is that you wish. The game has such care put into the dialogue boxes/art and the writing ('Rhell used to look like... Hhmm that's strange, there's a thumb blocking the photo!') that everyone is bursting at the seams with personality. But the thing that surprised me the most with its writing was the game is very obviously queer, which is delightful. Rhell and a few others are very obviously trans, or at the very least have themes of being your truest self that resonated a lot with me. Again it is at once a Nintendo game and better than one in that it is more than the sum of its parts, not just an excuse for gameplay purposes but an intergral part of the game's heart that the developer has obviously put a part of themselves into. It's a game for all ages, kids and adults, I can imagine in some alternate universe playing for hours on end in the early aughts.

Rhell is a puzzle game, and your enjoyment will largely depend on how much you like the genre. I enjoy puzzle games to a point, but I start to lose interest when I get stuck and the challenges become overly complex. I went in expecting an adventure with immersive sim elements, but instead found a game focused almost entirely on puzzles. Even so, I was impressed by the freedom it offers. With 40 spells that can be combined in countless ways, the game encourages creative solutions and sometimes even lets you "break" it. That level of experimentation reminded me a lot of the puzzles in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. 8 - Very Good.
MUY MUY RECOMENDABLE SI TE GUSTAN LOS PUZLES O LOS IMSIMS. Lo unico que no me gusta es que no haya opción para español.
rhell so good iconic i love the puzzles
Very good systems-driven puzzle game, lots of room for alternate solutions and creativity. Music kinda sucks but everything else about the presentation is fine.
A neat puzzle game
I can't write a longer review because a flaming log is attracted to the top of my head.
It's wild to me that Rhell hasn't made a bigger splash considering how good the core idea is. Casting spells up to 5 runes long with tons of possible interactions between runes and between spells and the world opens up so many creative solutions to puzzles (which btw are also varied and smart per se) that I couldn't believe this was the work of a mostly solo dev. It's very BOTW-like in its encouragement to just mess around with impractical or weird solution just to see what sticks, while offering less handholding and dropping you right into a mysterious world full of secrets and collectibles. Its Gamecube nostalgia is more impractical than charming sometimes (the camera IS annoying) & a more robust quest log would have worked wonders to help the player feel less lost, but this is the puzzle game of the year for me.
