I recall playing the first Dark Castle as my first video game when I was a wee lad on an old Apple II. This retains much of the original, the sequel and then adds onto it with it's own spin on the series. A piece of gaming history that isn't much talked about or known but was well ahead of it's time in many ways. Can't recommend giving this a look enough. The mechanics are simple: 3 kinds of jumps, rock throwing and then some upgrades in a shield and fireballs give you tools to engage in platforming in an intuitive and rewarding way. Art style is faithful yet updated to keep the familiar look of the original with a more palatable appearance for modern tastes. Difficulties don't make the enemies tougher or hit harder (you still die to an arrow in one hit) but change placement of enemies, add or remove items and change map layouts making each difficulty play differently and presenting new challenges. Well worth the price for hours of gameplay.
I just want to leave a Thank you to developers from giving this game a place in the modern systems. It would have been a shame to have this wonderful thing lost in the void of old computer systems. Y grew up in Caracas, Venezuela, and played this constantly in my dad's Macintosh. I think the most endearing to me is the sound effects. I actually play it with the music off to hear the old voice of Duncan (now Bryant) whenever if tripped, fall and (alas) died. I will play this constantly. From what little I played it feels like the remake I bought back in 2011. so it is wonderful to see it in Steam. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much!

My God, the controls are nigh impossible.
It's as engaging and addictive as the original. Oi.
I never expected this one to get re-released and ported to other systems than the Mac. Definitely feels like a continuation of the original black-and-white games. Maybe you had to be there - the controls can be a bit frustrating at times - but so far it's everything I hoped it would be, so I like it.
Phenomenal action/precision platformer returns from the days of yore. Its reputation was unfortunately sullied by some poor ports, most infamously the Genesis version. Those who played the original Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle know how awesome those games really were. This version replicates the excellence of the Mac titles, along with all the old levels, updated graphics, new upgrades, mechanics, a replay feature, very helpful tutorial level, character customization, and even adds a boatload of new levels. This game is difficult, but gets easier quickly with practice and is incredibly satisfying to defeat. Highly recommended!
Expect a difficult challenge but the game is ultimately fair once you understand the movement patterns and obstacles. This was the original challenge on Macintosh. I have enjoyed this reboot a lot.
This is a great Game. There is nothing else I have seen like. Just go ahead and try it.
Having played the original Dark Castle as a young ruffian in the mid 1980s I was delighted to read about Return to Dark Castle's release this year. I'm still as terrible as I remember but am loving every minute of it. Thanks for the nostalgia and fondness that has clearly been poured into this version. Top marks!
I played this on my family's old Mac until I moved out and couldn't play anymore. I'm so so so happy this game won't be lost to history!!! Highly recommend, it's such a classic.
