About
WHAT THIS GAME IS
An action-adventure puzzle-platformer that pushed the limits of the genre.
A larger, nonlinear quest filled with scrolling environments, mazes, weapons, hidden routes and five magical orbs
More slapstick character animation and dark humor
Bombs to blast through barriers and copter packs to master
The Black Knight survived, and Duncan’s quest gets bigger, stranger, and more dangerous. Beyond Dark Castle expands the original cult classic into a deeper action-adventure, with new rooms, new hazards, new tools, and a far more ambitious castle to conquer.
Collect the magic orbs, master the fireball and shield, and push through towers, catacombs, swamps, breweries, labyrinths, and the Black Knight’s final defenses. The challenge is still precise and unforgiving, but the adventure is broader, richer, and even more satisfying to master.
For retro collectors, precision-platforming fans, and players who appreciate games from the era before hand-holding, Beyond Dark Castle delivers a hard-earned classic sequel. It is funny, punishing, inventive, and built for players who enjoy the climb.

Reviews
I played this game so much as a kid. Now, multiple decades later, this port is exactly how I remembered it! It's been a great trip down memory lane!
If you liked Dark Castle this game is more of the same, and I mean that as a compliment. It builds on the old one, but is bigger and more varied. Being able to save/restore and practice individual levels helps too. It's an eighties platformer, with black-and-white graphics, but as long as that doesn't turn you off I recommend it. If that does turn you off, there's Return to Dark Castle which is a lot more of the same (still in a good way), but in color.
A wonderful rerelease of the classic Beyond Dark Castle! It's a wonderful game, but don't expect something better than what Classic Macs were capable of 35 years ago. This is an old game, a faithful rerelease of the original, right down to the black and white graphics and the incredible difficulty. At least this one is slightly easier than its earlier incarnation, regular Dark Castle, mainly because of the save function that still exists in this version.

(I was in the beta test) Very faithful recreation of the game with controls that feel accurate and good. I say this as a player who played the original in 1989 on my Mac Plus. This sequel to the original Dark Castle is much bigger in scope, shares the same mechanics but extends them with many more challenges, enemies, items and rooms. The one thing that sets it apart in the minds of players is the save/restore mechanism found in the bottom left room 'computer room'. It's understandable to feel frustrated by the arcade-like mentality of the first title and get a game over before you beat the game. In Beyond to Dark Castle, you can divide up your progress after completing a sequence of room, provided you go save in the computer room. This makes all the difference and critically lowers the bar of entry for many. In fact, Beyond Dark Castle can be your first gentler entry into the series if you are totally new to it all. Kudos to Mark S. Pierce for the humorous, memorable art and animations and for Eric Zocher for the unforgettable sounds.
