Puzzle perfection. A tight mystery with a wonderfully exciting gameplay hook and gorgeous aesthetics. Completely unable to put it down, I unraveled the entire thing in one sitting with absolute focus. Every time I made a deduction and it landed a confirmation I clapped with delight. It's like doing a crossword puzzle but you're investigating a maritime disaster. Even disconnected from the way you piece it together the story is really fun, and I particularly love how many other mysteries are contained within it that go unanswered because they are simply beyond the scope of what you are here to do. Excellent voice performances all around add a ton of character as well, and I truly can't mention enough how gorgeous the entire game looks. Such a treat to experience. I am so glad I stopped putting it off.
I enjoy other deduct-em-ups but this just feels so clunky and annoying to play. Having to slowly trudge from body to body to play memories back, having to watch that slow annoying ghost cloud do a Tony Hawk 720 spin flip before revealing the corpse you've been waiting at, all the transitions, having to exit memories through a physical door... this just sucks to interact with in nearly every way. The story and the mystery/puzzles are good so far but it's a chore and I regret buying it edit: lol yeah i had to watch that stupid orb dance for 10 full seconds, one by one, to reveal three bodies that were all laying next to each other. this game is just straight up disrespectful of your time.
The first 3 hours on the Obra Dinn are a painful linear grind of viewing all scenes, in dischronological order, and following a slow glowing orb without even knowing what to look out for. This is a fatal design flaw because it forces the dull story on the player in a way that does not reflect or help with the main game loop. Once you're off the hook, the deducing of available information begins. Literally everything you see and hear is information. You're asked the same question 60 times: Who is this, and what's their fate? If you want to feel like Sherlock himself, go for it! Having your theories confirmed by the game sure is satisfying, but it gets tiring and repetitive. The game does a lot of things right, but it's merciless and monotone. I give it a 6/10. The Obra Dinn is not very accessible. You need sharp vision and hearing, background knowledge about seafaring, cultures and languages. If you're here because you were told this is like Outer Wilds, it is not. The only similarity really is that knowledge is the only currency. If you're looking for an eventful mystery to actually experience as you solve it, go play Outer Wilds. To help you decide, have this objective comparison. Ever since I finished Outer Wilds, I've been chasing that feeling of solving a mystery instead of just playing through one. Everyone kept recommending Return of the Obra Dinn, and now I get why. At first I was completely lost. I didn't understand what I was supposed to do, who anyone was, or how I was ever going to identify 60 people. But slowly you start noticing little details.
Uniforms, accents, friendships, where people sleep, where they work...
and before you know it, you're connecting everything together yourself. The best part is that the game never treats you like you're stupid. It trusts you to figure things out, and when something finally clicks, it feels incredibly rewarding. I'm also really into drawing, especially black-and-white, high-contrast ink work, so I absolutely loved the art style. It's simple at first glance, but every scene is so carefully designed that it's impossible to forget. Huge respect to Lucas Pope for creating something this unique. Now that I've finished both Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn, I'm left asking the same question again: What's the next mystery game that's going to completely pull me in?
