Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator

I’ve never had much interest in the “shop sim” genre of games but this one really stuck out for me. Finally, I am able to relive my nostalgia of growing up with blockbuster. Stocking physical VHS, having trailers and movies play over the TVs, bright and decorative environment, having imaginary conversations about movies and recommendations with the customers, and just the 90’s/early 2000’s nostalgia. Though not terribly different from other shop sims, it does feel like this does get a bit more love. Plenty of unlockables include concessions, movie genres, arcades, etc. Expand your store, buy more movies, scan and rewind videos, serve food, and more. It’s very interactive. All the movies are either a random combination of images that will produce an associated title or for New Releases a parody of hit movies from decades ago. What I’m really excited for and started doing is modding in actual movies to REALLY relive those youthful years and get to stock recognizable and beloved movies truly creating the experience. The modding scene is only growing and I’m hoping the dev continues to update the game as it does eventually plateau but I don’t mind popping back in to check on my store and run a few days. Characters are a bit more cartoony than I imagined and there are limited channels to flip between (despite there being several folders in the game folder) but I am hopeful and confident these will be later updates. Absolutely Recommended.

Well done on a fantastic little game, would like to know when the next update will be as I'm looking forward to recapturing the memories of seeing 90s style video games for rent, (had a Commodor 64 and Amstrad back in the day.

I would love to see second locations or expanding upon the store itself. I have no room anymore.

I like it to a degree for a simulator. Its very limited, TCG does it way better. You get a second employee at level 20, so thats probably about 15 hours of gameplay, and its a slog. Its incredibly repetitive, either you checkout or you handle returns, while you have your first employee doing the other job. So I cant focus on curating my movies, or designing the store, etc. because Im forced to perform incredibly repetitive tasks for sooo long. I understand if the other employees are locaked behind levels like 5 or 10, but 20?? The features are really limited, you cant set your own price for snacks, movie rentals, movie purchases, etc. There are no stats to display how popular the store is or if adding decorations even does anything. Having the ability to "sell" movies isnt really fleshed out either because you cant control the price, and the "rarity" boxes dont make much sense either; are they in higher demand? I know they cost more if a customer buys them but what about rentals? Theres a black market feature to buy specific movies but it has this janky SKU system where you have to find the movie you want to buy from a shelf, and repeatedly look at the 8 digit random number and type that into the computer to buy it; you cant even reference the catalog of movies you have and buy them that way, you have to go out on the floor and sift through them to find the one you want. Overall for a sim I love the idea of your own blockbuster, and I do see potential, but its not there yet. Its waaaay too much of slog and repetitive work that needs to be done. If you want a sim store go for TCG over this.
