About
Recettear is the story of an item shop, the girl who lives in it, and the fairy who turned her life upside down. Recette Lemongrass finds herself in charge of an item shop built into her house, in order to pay back a loan her father took and then skipped out on - and Tear, her newfound fairy "companion", won't take no for an answer! As Recette, you have to decide how you'll get your stock - either through playing the markets in town or going out into the wild with an adventuring friend and thrashing beasts until they give up the goodies - how much to sell things for, what the shop should look like, and how to best go about getting the money Tear needs to pay off the loan. If you can't come up with the money... well, hope you like living in a cardboard box.
Recettear, An Item's Shop tale has to be one of the coziest games you can play 7/10

Kill monsters, dodge fish, then go home and sell toothpicks!

🎮 Core Gameplay 7/10
• Mechanics: You own an Item shop in an adventuring world selling treasures, armor, weapons, and food. You can also hire adventurers to go out and get rare goods for crafting. 8/10 • Balance: good 8/10 • Challenge: Fair, I failed on the final payment to "beat" the game. The adventuring is pretty easy, the trick is learning the trade system, which isn't explained well in-game. 8/10 • Variety: It gets stale pretty quick, cycle between adventure and selling. 4/10 ________________________________________
📖 Story & Writing 8/10
• Plot:
You play as Recette, a young girl who was abandoned by her dad. A bank representative comes to warn you of an impending eviction if you don't start paying your rent. So naturally you open a store out of your house to make payments. Along the way you meet adventurers, different town folk, and even a nemesis. You can learn their stories or completely ignore them.
10/10 • Characters: Recette, being a young girl, is Naive which can kind of be annoying but does fit the theme. The adventurers are your standard D&D gang. You have the warrior, the thief, the fighter, the lancer, the wizard, the ranger, and you kind of act as the healer. 9/10 • Dialogue: It gets tiring and flat. I read almost everything to begin with because the dialog helped you play the game but after I missed the final payment I watched guides and they said to ignore what the instructions the bank fairy Tear says. 5/10 ________________________________________
🌍 World & Design 6.5
• Level Design: The only "level" is adventure levels and they feel slightly out of place after the first 2 areas. 6/10 • Exploration: Not really, You spend most of your time selling in your own shop, adventuring, and going to the guild. There is a Pub, City center, and chapel, but unless you want to know every ounce of character background you don't really need to go to these places. 4/10 • Atmosphere: The atmosphere of the shop does feel immersive. NPC's haggle with you, they get upset if you charge too much, they place future orders, they ask about additional stock and a lot of other things. 10/10 ________________________________________
🎨 Visuals & Style
• UI/UX: I mostly just wanted to point something that threw me off. The controls are arrow keys and Z, X. C. This was fine after I adjusted but I had to google these controls before starting the game ________________________________________
🎧 Audio
• Voice Work: The same things get repeated, it gets annoying ________________________________________
⚙️ Technical Performance
• Optimization: Bring out your older hamster to get some exercise. • Bugs/Glitches: None ________________________________________
👥 Replayability & Content
• Length: After roughly 10 hours I got to the final payment where the game ends but you can continue to play and level up your store, go on harder adventures, and craft new items. • Replay Value: There is New game+, you can continue to complete everything, or there is even survival mode where your debt is never erased. ________________________________________
💰 Value & Monetization
• Price vs Content: Being that this game was made is 2007, nearly 20 years ago, get it at a discount ________________________________________
💡 Innovation & Identity
• Uniqueness: Selling items in a cozy game setting, iconic. • Genre Evolution: Does it move the genre forward? Absolutely. ________________________________________
🔚 Final Impression
• Overall Feel: Did you want to keep playing? I did until I failed at the last payment and realized you can just continue with a "fake start", you keep your levels, items, everything but you start the story from the beginning. • Would you recommend it? And to whom? Yes, to cozy gamers.
Very good game, half of the game you exploring dungeon while controlling adventurer, half of the game you selling items in a store, some you get from dungeon, some you buy. Nice story, well made characters, simple but fun gameplay. Thanks Carpe Fulgur for translating this amazing game, and other nice games, thanks, Andrew.
