Rtype is the OG Shmup! this one has a bunch of Customization, too!
Lots of fun! Discovering all the different ships and then crashing them!

nice work.
If you liked R-Type Final on the PS2 then you'll like its successor. It's not terribly balanced because there are so many ships, which can add a ton more challenge to the stages. The main campaign is all right, with multiple paths to three different end stages. Also, some of the stages are rather barren graphically, but others are beautiful. There are multiple difficulties to test your skill, with Normal being pretty easy and R-Typer 3 being similar to R-Typer on the original Final game. The DLC packs for this game are where it really shines - you can use the course editor to make an original stage layout and add DLC stages, some of which are easier and shorter than the main campaign. A lot of the stages are homages to stages from R-Type I, II, III, Delta, Final, and even Leo. There are some subtle differences in them, but having knowledge of the original stages helps, and the new renditions of their stage themes are wonderful. There are three DLC packs, which I'd recommend if you're buying the game at all, because it adds a lot more variety to the game. As for unlocking the 100+ ships in game, you get resources for completing stages that you can spend on different ships. As of December 2025 when I was playing, there were 110 ships in game. A lot of them are repeats, with more updated versions coming after you unlock the basic version. There are a lot of different Forces and weapons that go with them, leading to a ton of variety. Some ships are highly specialized, and it takes a lot of testing to see what fits your playstyle. If you like R-Type, you'll be committing a lot of time to unlocking the different ships. Score Attack lets you replay any stage that you've already cleared, starting you with full Bits and a fully powered Force and you can use this mode to practice stages that you were having trouble with. This is a really handy feature. Most stages are around 4 1/2 to 5 minutes long, but you can expect to die a lot and start over from the beginning of each stage until you're competent at them. It's a shame that Granzella hasn't released R-Type Final 3 Evolved for Steam, but there's so much content in R-Type Final 2 that it's not that big of a deal. It's still missed though. I'd definitely recommend R-Type Final 2 if you like shmups. Not nearly as balanced as R-Type Delta, but still - a lot of fun.
i like the different ship variants
I prefer the original Final, though the DLC saves this game. The main game has some good stages, but a lot of them are in the second half. Conversely, there are some stages, like 4.1, that are straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The DLC stages, especially the remakes of Delta and Final stages, are fantastic. Visuals are mostly ugly, though some of the stages look pretty sweet. Music is just kinda there. Vibes are all over the place and don't ever reach the heights of R-Type Final. Ship physics are a bit ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. For example, the Tentacle Force is extremely slow, which is very disappointing as it is my favorite ship because of how much of a beast it is. Despite its flaws, R-Type Final 2 is a decent game when you factor in the DLC. The sheer amount of content makes this a package worth getting (on sale) if you're a huge R-Type fan. Final is still better, tho.
rtype is classic as hell good game and alot of ships to unlock
just like rtype of my youth
