Populous™ on Steam feels like yet another lazy EA cash grab. Don’t get me wrong—back in 1989, Populous was a groundbreaking game that essentially created the god-game genre, giving players the power to manipulate terrain and command followers as a divine being. But in 2024? EA re-releases the game with almost no effort to update it for modern standards, which is seriously disappointing. The UI and resolution options are incredibly outdated. Yes, you can bump it up to 1440p, but considering we’re talking about a game from over 30 years ago, that's really the bare minimum you'd expect. Even worse, the game doesn’t come with any real improvements or remastering efforts—there’s no attempt to modernize the visuals or gameplay. EA just slapped it up on Steam without much thought. Also, it's really frustrating that this Steam version lacks basic optimizations. Players have pointed out that to get a smooth experience without glitches or crashes, you’re better off downloading fan-made patches. Yep, you read that right—the community had to step in and fix what EA didn’t bother to address. There's even a better fan-made version floating around that updates the game way better than this official release. It’s hard to recommend this version when you can clearly see it’s just a quick nostalgia push by EA. Unless you’re desperate for a trip down memory lane, you’re better off skipping this or at least grabbing it on sale.

Gameplay is how I recall from the 90s, but they nixed all sound effects which is really odd. They also changed the music to some midi soundtrack that sucks.. If you want the original game, this isn't exactly it.. It's a crappier version of the OG.
If, like me, you played this on the Amiga and your fond memories of this game heavily revolve around the music and sound effects (heartbeat, wind, choir-like sounds) please be aware, they are not in this version of the game. It is instead some poppy, upbeat keyboard music; I thought something was wrong with my computer and the sound was coming from elsewhere! The nostalgia I was hoping for just isn't there and it is disappointing. Other than that, this is the game as I remember it, and I am glad I can play it (on mute, haha) - but very much hope the Amiga music can be added.
"Populous™" was a groundbreaking title for its time that introduced the god game genre to the world in 1989. As a deity, you manipulate the landscape, guide your followers, and clash with rival gods in a bid for dominance. The game’s innovative mechanics, like raising and lowering terrain to influence your people, were revolutionary at the time and laid the foundation for future strategy games. While the graphics and AI may feel outdated by today’s standards, "Populous™" still holds a special place in gaming history. Its creative gameplay and strategic depth make it a must-play for fans of classic games and those interested in the origins of god games.
I have purchased the game as is one of my favourite games of my chilhood. sadly it only shows the launcher logo and gets stuck there, I oppened a comunity discussion asking for help there, and nothing, zero acivity, game wont start, seems a scame to get a little bit more of money from the comunity. Fix this and make the game playable and will re-review this feedback.
Just let it stay in memories.
It took some fiddling with DOSbox to get this working: specifically, changing from output=overlay to output=opengl, or else it would just crash in fullscreen mode. The other change worth making is changing scaler= to tv2x, as this is an *old* game and it looks awful without scanlines. It plays almost exactly as I remember, which is great. Bullfrog nailed the mechanics on this one: it's easy, approachable and intuitive. Every game after (PowerMonger, Populous II, Syndicate, Godus, B&W) was more visually impressive, but didn't have Populous' intuitiveness. If I have a complaint, it's the this is a exact re-release of the DOS version, which means you don't get the Amiga version's intro and (much, much, much better) music and sound effects. When you're in the game, it plays more or less the same, but the audioscape of the Amiga version is much, much better.

Sadly no remakes have been made for this old version. The Super Nintendo had the last best version. I discovered you can only save 1 game on C:1, if you try to save on the 1st 2,A & B it won't save or give error. If you just got this game , try saving on C:1 or try them all until at least 1 of them works.
