POLYBIUS is a fast, trippy tunnel shooter playable on a normal screen or in VR. 50 levels of blissful trance shooting action are set to a blistering soundtrack. The PS4 version was EDGE Magazine's VR GOTY in 2017, and the PC version of the game was even used as the basis for a NIN music video.

One of Minter's best. Hardly need to say anything else, really.
Look, you're either into Jeff Minter's blend of frantic, psychadelic fuelled arcade madness or you're not. If not, this won't sell you on it, but if you are, this is one game you definitely need in your collection. While it has similarity to his other offerings, this isn't quite as hard to follow visually and has a more open playfield, giving more flexibility and also more breathing room compared to something like his Tempest-style games. This will require practice and persistence as all Llamasoft games do, but isn't as demanding as others and you can iterate and get good at it quickly. Quality Minter as always!
Still a great game. I actually own this on two platforms, PC and PS4, and it is great on both. Get your modern tempest fix.

I saw that some fellow Cymry produced this title and simply had to sink my gnashers in. This is a hidden gem that feels like if F-Zero GX, Tetrisphere, and 70s-80s arcade space shooters had a love-child, then sprinkled in SNES Starwing-style models for good measure. Incredibly surreal and flashy game with that UK humour that I absolutely love. It's a serious work of art that brings the urban legend of Polybius to PC. It controls really well and encourages you not to target fixate for even a second: You're shooting down various different tube sorts of stages like a bullet train like a bat out of hell, all while being assaulted with colours and psychedelic elements that are normally reserved for those in the clouds. I like the imagery of a bull charging through these levels too, it gives you a slight feeling of power when your speed is juuuust right. It's good, it's satisfying, and I'll probably be addicted to this by tomorrow morning. I see a fountain of experience in here, and with a quick lookup of the company, my hunch was right. There are two specific issues I want to raise, though: - I think the bull horns could do with being a bit more forgiving. If you bash into the horns, you'll lose a shield and a lot of momentum, but the window for going through one is seriously tight. I like the tightness and risk-reward, but even if I'm dead-on the path I'll sometimes just bonk. Just a smidge, aye? - When opening on PC to configure keyboard controls, it'll give you a full control layout, and many of these controls seem unnecessary for the game. I would prefer if it was slimmed down so that my keybinds are all relevant; this is especially important for a first-time player. Also, they don't save! Bwaaah! Allwn ni gael cyfieithiad Cymraeg hefyd? Diolch~
Back in middle school I showed a friend Touhou and I think this is what he saw. Don't play this if your eyes are sensitive. Tempest was one of the games that inspired the Polybius story, so perfect for Jeff Minter and Llamasoft, creators of Tempest 2000 and TxK, to work on an "official" version. It's distinct from those though, being more like a traditional rail shooter than Tempest's fixed Tube Shooter style. Rather than overt evil, this goes for visual overstimulation. A normal video game that makes me feel the way this game does would be negative, but this turns that feeling into an art. Separating the noise from the signal is the challenge of this game, while still having a mechanically solid game underneath. Of course, there were definitely times when I had no idea what made me die and I repeated stages without knowing what was going on multiple times in a row, but I was able to persevere. Soundtrack's great as usual too. Normal VR makes me feel sick so I wouldn't dare try this game's VR mode even if I had a headset. I only cleared Normal mode. Pure and YOLO mode are definitely not for me. Not even just out of difficulty, I'm also worried my eyes would hurt.
fantastic shoot them up genre of game. It is insanely trippy, but in a very good way. I did not expect this game to be this fun. I found it by chance when i typed in "donationware video games" and the game developer website came up. It is a nice to have game that has such level of gameplay density. Modern day games have too much content, but it is spread out across the game and fed to the player like an intravenous drip. It is quite annoying when I simply want to get the best parts of the game, the meat and potatoes, not the bad parts of the game, the stale and moldy bread that has sitting in the fridge for months. I remember play the first Tekken on PS1. The game was quite fun because all of the action was in one location. The game feels the exact same way. The introduction of excessively large maps, microtransactions and the economic commodifying of video games has turned the industry into a MBA course, rather than a pure abstract art form like a painting such as Mona Lisa. I hope if the developer is reading this to make this style of games to counteract this ever increasing trend. If more players financially support these style of games, hopefully that will provide developers in smaller studios an economic incentive to provide these style of games. A great game 10/10. For anyone reading this, I wish you the best in your personal endeavours.
