Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster

Firstly, I can't believe this game is 30 years old next year. I had it back when it first came out, May 1997 I was 17 and had only moved onto PC's from Sega consoles about 18 months before. Around the time the games were Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Dark Forces, Redneck Rampage and Quake. Outlaways offered something different and I loved it. For the time, the graphics were very unique but in all it was very good game. I think I last played it about 2000, until a year ago when I saw that it was available for Steam. When I heard Nightdive were remastering it, I had to get it, especially after thier excellent remaster of Quake an d Quake II and Outlaws Remaster does not disappoint. Granted for me there is a lot of nostalgia with this game, I was 17 and like the early-mid 1990's Sega console era of Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage and Street Fighter II before it, the late 1990's/early 2000's was an exciting time to be around PC game developments at the time. If you like mid-late 1990's retro PC games, then you will love Outlaws Remaster.

Outlaws is, to my knowledge, the game that best emulates the feeling of a gunfight in a Western movie. Both you and the enemies die fast, especially on the higher difficulties. Bad difficulty was the sweet spot for me in terms of fun. Reloading feels tactical and deliberate, and you need to consider which weapon is best for each situation. The feeling of entering a room full of bad guys and quickly emptying your revolver into them is *chef’s kiss*. The level design leaves a lot to be desired. Levels frequently devolve into confusing key hunts that kill the otherwise perfect rhythm established by the combat. Important elements required for progression are sometimes poorly signposted, and in some missions the critical path involves something that would be considered a secret in another game. The sawmill, in particular, might be my least favorite level in any retro shooter. No game from 1997 should cost this much. The main campaign is also only around four hours long if you do not spend too much time lost, though there are additional missions outside it. Overall, it is a very good retro shooter, especially for people who like Westerns. I recommend it, but get it on sale if possible, and only if labyrinthine levels are not a deal breaker.

Fun remaster but be ready for very mazey levels

Pretty impressive western FPS from the 90s. I thought the story was pretty good and the gameplay was fun as well, even though some of the puzzles were evil. Another banger remaster from the good folks over at Nightdive.

WHERE ARE YOU MARSHALL? Don't be a fool marshall! I remember watching my cousin playing this game when I was a kid. Now I understand why he liked this game so much.

I really wanted to like OUTLAWS, but I do not. Even though this game has the awesome cowboy setting and some pretty excellent cutscenes/story, the game itself is not very fun. It feels very dated, and not really in a good way. Levels are key hunts, which I do enjoy in general, but the game's poor level design makes these key hunts frustrating. Shooting and movement feel fine enough, but the weapon roster is bloated and boring, and the enemies all function the same and lack variety. Idk. Maybe if you really like the wild west setting, maybe if you are nostalgic for this game, or if you have a certain affinity for "charming" old shooters then maybe I could recommend it. But I did not have very much fun with this one. And it is priced rather expensive for this type of game, and how little content it offers.
