Great game; my preferred mode is playing as the GM. I played 17 seasons as the Montreal Expos, starting as a new expansion franchise in the 1969 season, losing gobs of games, with almost no depth. The first few years were bleak; my center fielder managed two gold gloves, so I traded him for talent. Finally, in 1974, some hope emerged - a guy named Jeff Burroughs avoided his historical Ten Cent Beer Night fate, and won Rookie of the Month three times, although his Expo teammate George Brett managed to snag Rookie of the Year from him. But even as we improved, the Phillies improved still more. With a superb offense, multiple ace-quality starters, and the best closer in the league, they became the playthrough's first true dynasty. I did well; they did better, winning the World Series several times. Finally, in 1980, with a combination of veterans and rookies performing at their highest, the breakthrough arrives. We reach the final series of the year two games ahead of the Phillies, at 107-52 - and the last series is against the Phillies. We lose the first game, 4-3. We lose the second game, 4-3. It all comes down to the last game of the year. Two teams, both 107-54. Will the Phillies extend their dynasty, and be in the driver's seat for another championship? Or will the Expos slip by them? I click the "Finish today" button, glance up, and... we won! 7-2! The Expos would go on to win the World Series for the first time in 1980. Philadelphia would bounce back to win again in the early 1980s, but was aging slightly faster, exacerbated by trading their better prospects to continue their run. In 1985, the Expos would strike again, winning the World Series with a more veteran squad, led by a bevy of sluggers in the outfield. After that championship, knowing a decline was likely over the next few years with the lack of fresh talent in the farm system, I managed to tear myself away for several months. Now I've taken up the reigns of Cleveland in 1973, the first year of their historical new ownership. I expected to lose horribly, spend a few years collecting draft picks, and make a run for it some time in the 1980s. Instead, Cleveland was the best team in baseball out of the gate with a stock 1973 roster, and despite slowing down considerably in May and early June - even falling a game below .500 - showed promise. Maybe if I could find a better reliever, pick up a better hitter, get someone who could steal a base... a foundation could be made. And so, a few trades later, I've picked up a slugger from the Cubs, a young speed demon - no longer an Angel - to play center field, a utility man to help defensively anywhere needed, a promising second base prospect, and Tug McGraw to be my closer. And all I had to give up were three expendable outfielders, one of my catchers, an underperforming five-time All-Star, and the 1971 Rookie of the Year! Since the trades started, we're 11-6! Ya Gotta Believe!
scratches the brad pitt moneyball sim itch
...scratches the PC baseball sim itch, vigorously! :)
Best baseball simulation gets even better!
If you love simulation games and baseball I would highly recommend it. This year has a much deeper prospect and development system, it corrects several issues and unrealistic parts of the previous version that I had from a couple years ago.
