Another Capcom banger. Combat is great. It's slower than Nioh or Sekiro but still very technical. Combat is a give and take dance against your opponent that requires being patient and reacting appropriately to their tells. There's many skills to use that all have their place and keep the pace and flow of combat smooth. Not a button masher, always a plus. The game shines brightest in the "legacy dungeon" areas, and not so much in the semi-open world town you spend a lot of the game in. Lots of backtracking, and not in the fun Resident Evil way where you get new keys to open old doors, it's more like "go back to this place where you fought a boss and fight another boss." I don't know if this was just filler or if they were specifically trying to ape on other AAA games of this era with the half-baked open world mechanics. Boring areas, dumb little side quests everywhere with unexiciting rewards, bad cutscenes with random NPCs. Would have been better being a more linear experience with purposely crafted levels. While those random street interaction cutscenes are no good the actual story cutscenes are incredible. Great animation, voice acting, characters. The setting is also wonderful, with many creative and frightening creature designs. The story itself is just OK, however. Pretty standard fantasy fare that's not bringing a whole lot new to the table. It runs very well. Not quite as well as other RE Engine games like Requiem and Pragmata on my machine, but after some tinkering I got a steady 144fps with quality superscaling and frame gen on a 9070 XT. This game stuttered a lot when I had VRR enabled, but disabling it made it run smooth. It's a departure from the old Onimusha games, modernized in a way that doesn't preserve the original style as well as the Resident Evil remakes/reboots. A great game from a developer that's currently on fire and hopefully the gateway to more Onimusha sequels.
1. It's Onimusha 2. Capcom's 2026 run has been ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ legendary
love it
