About

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.
Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you can use for whatever you want.
Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

I made a song so bad all my friends in the discord call blocked me, but the digital person I made it for loved it so I think it was worth it.
Have you ever wanted to make music, maybe even downloaded FL Studio and tried, but just got so totally overwhelmed that you gave up? What's a Major key? What the heck is DAW or a VST? This cuts through all of that. It starts you off small and teaches you. It lets you explore and grow your understanding naturally. It challenges you! Best of all. Everything you make is yours. Full legal ownership. Need music for a video? A game? You can make it here. These are real skills you can learn just by playing a game. Have fun!

OffBeat is a fantastic game. As someone who teaches audio production to 14-25 year olds I have been looking for something that gamifies production, while also making it fun and guilt free. Something that people can take home without thinking of DAWS, RAM and VSTs and the massive equipment list that usually goes with it. There are two objectives in the game, make something, and keep to what the client/prompt wants. But beyond that this game is just happy that we're creating something. There is no competitive element to what you create which is insanely refreshing for an industry that changes it's mind on what is good and bad. Plus unlike other companies that might try and gobble your creations to just fill their social media quota, these guys actually encourage you to keep what you make. I've been playing since the demo and even streamed the demo on Twitch, the company got in contact and offered me the full game because I had so much enjoyment out of it. If that doesn't speak volumes about the devs, I don't know what does. (Not paid to review, just hyped that this game exists)
All it took was 45 minutes and I spent $400 to start resurrecting my 17 year old music career I left behind during COVID. Thanks, guys.
this game is genuienly such a refreshing concept, especially as someone who makes music. the game is pretty much its own DAW (digital audio workstation. where music is produce digitally) condensed into a game format. the challenges are difficult for begginers but also guide you enough to understand the bare basics of making music. but it goes beyond that and contains a high skill ceiling to bring any pre existing skills into. it gives you challenges and unique ways tto make music and sounds, so even people who are gnarly at producing already would definently enjoy this. PLUS it also has a sandbox mode wehre you can make beats without any of the restrictions or guidelines (which is why i said its like a DAW, you can 1000% use it as one if you dont already own one or wanna use different unique sounds). i genueinly havent stopped thinking about the game today. you also get to keep all the music you make in the game, free to export it at any time! which is honestly suuuuppppeerrrrr nice to have as a mechanism. they state at the start that anythinng made is yours to keep and is owned by you. tbh this is an AMAZING game to try out if you wanna get into music production. its stripped down enough yet has such a high skill ceiling as well that you'd be able to spend plenty of hours on, mastering the basics and more of production. awesome devs, they made a banger, cant say it enough.
I am playing this as someone with no music background, but an interest in making music, and I really found this game approachable. Everything is explained concisely without requiring theory, and I appreciate it, as I find music theory super intimidating. The music is quirky, the clients are odd and fun, and that monkey is adorable I'll take 3. I suppose if you're looking for a more classical feeling or realistic feeling of music, this game may not provide, but if you're looking for garage band sounds from toys at a yardsale, here you go. The game gives you clients with requirements to give you a direction, and then you are free to make the best (or worst) sounding piece. I'm unsure how realistic the sequencer is, but it looks similar enough to other music programs I've seen that it at least might be a familiar tool to apply elsewhere. There's also a freeform mode you unlock early in if you just want to make noise without a client. I do wish you could reorganize the instruments on your desk (though I understand why you can't, it's predetermined x)), and occasionally the sequencer has small bugs, but nothing unplayable has occurred.
Experience the ultimate fantasy for any artist: clients who pay in full on time without complaint
i really like the concept for this game. it’s nice, light hearted, and casual. only thing i would add is connectivity for a midi keyboard or at least the ability to play notes on your computer keyboard
As someone who has always wanted to work on making music but has always been overwhelmed by the various software and everything that goes into it, this game is perfect! It is such a nice and easy way to get introduced to everything. On top of that the writing is fun, the style is fun and whimsical, and overall it is just a fantastic game.
