Nexus - The Jupiter Incident

Janky as hell 2004 game, but I still rate it positively after picking it up cheap. The ships often feel unresponsive, like you're giving suggestions on what to do, rather than the more precise control of a fleet you have in homeworld. There is a "direct control" mode that helps a lot, but regardless if you tell a ship to go to a navpoint, it'll go to the approximate area of the point. There are also some times where you tell a ship to fire with a specific weapon at a specific vessel, then issue a move command and it forgets to keep firing until you re-issue it. Compared to Homeworld you have more control at a micro scale. You target enemies laser cannons specifically to disable them, or their engines or IP drives etc. There is quite a learning curve and some strategies will NOT work on certain levels. As a result there is a bit of a trial and error. Missiles may have been great for mission X, but mission Y you go in and suddenly all of your missiles get shot down by flak without doing anything. Your shield shredding guns may suddenly feel terrible one mission after you just dominated with them. This is addressed by letting you customize between missions, but it's still a matter of jumping in, seeing what you're facing and doing some trial and error, especially in the early/mid game. In later missions I'm starting to feel like I'm much more powerful (and better at the game), so there's less of this, but do expect it early on if you play on experienced. I do not recommend professional unless you are looking for a serious challenge. There's also definitely some luck involved. I have been save scumming periodically throughout and many times I'll try the same thing a few times in a row. One time my smaller ship gets focus fired down, and another time it goes ignored and I succeed. Be warned! Lastly there are some missions that are absolute gimmicks. Without spoiling anything it involves the stealth mode you see in the bottom left that you can't do anything with yet in the first handful of missions. These are not very fun in my opinion, but save scumming prevails. That sounds like a lot of neutral and negative things, but I'm finding myself drawn back in to continue every evening. The story is not anything life changing but it is interesting, and despite the jank the battles DO feel very fun when you finally conquer them. Besides 2 or 3 specific missions I've had a good time in every mission and would play it again to see if I can beat it with other strategies.

excellent space stratagey game

I did not enjoy this game at all. i give it a 3/10. I wanted something similar to Homeworld or even Sins of a Solar Empire but this was not it. It has pretty space battle visuals but the gameplay is IMHO terrible. It is a very very dated game and does not hook you in. I did not care for the story and everything seemed hard to control. Some aspects also seemed half baked and lots was poorly explained. I understand why it didnt sell very well.

One of the best space games out there. However this game version on steam is broken, do not buy it unless you're willing to heavily mod it
