An interesting showcase of detective work taken way too literally, including all the downtimes - endless backtracking at the slowest speed possible, sniffing dusty lowres pixels, talking to anyone about anything where 90% of the dialogue leads nowhere, and studying the geography, politics, and culture of a made up world. With no clear sense of the end goal and a sluggish UI that makes navigation absolutely tedious, the fun part never started for me.
If you like detective-work games, this is an excellent game (so far). If you liked The PainsCreek Killings in particular. At first I thought that it was too simple and I thought that validating information "early" would make it too easy. I was wrong. I was very wrong. I am lost in the sea of details to link together :D In particular I like how there are actions that you can do that are not told explicitly, you realize you can do them by attempting them... which is nice. A few cons: - The UI definitely needs to be improved, in particular in dialogs. Devs, please look at visual novel interfaces to help, notably ways to use only the keyboard, a click in the general text area to continue (not having to "target" a kind of small button to continue) - A clarification about the impact of passing time would help. I spent about 10h in the first museum scene because I was scared I would miss tons of details. I was actually right, but at the same time wrong as the next scene, same place but later, I got more clues and probably already had clues that should have been found later than the first scene. Not sure how this can be made better as I see the issue of having a place with the clues in place, logically, but not giving too much agency to the player either because the story needs to go forward at some point... - More ways to take note inside the game would help as there is a lot of crossing-data activities and that works badly with pen&paper notes. I ended up using Obsidian to keep track of some information. (context: I'm making a game in the same genre, more inspired by The PainsCreek Killings, but this one is very interesting and refreshing too)

A short but highly enjoyable detective game. If you are a person who has already played Return of the Obra Dinn and other similar games like those in the Golden Idol series, then buying this game should be a no-brainer. Admittedly, Mystery of the Malign can get a bit frustrating at times since it lacks the restricted structure of either the Obra Dinn or the Golden Idol games since you havee to actually move around in a 3D world with no handholding at all. The Obra Dinn by comparison heavily restricts player movement and therefore, in my opinion at least, helps the player better understand what must be looked at in order to progress further. I would suggest holding off on this game until you have played the other games that I have mentioned since, though it is a great game seen on its own, it is not as good as the abovementioned games.
Definitely scratches the investigative/detective/mystery game itch. Personally, I would have like to see the game and it's mechanics stretch over a few different cases rather than being just one very large case, but it's a nice case and I still really enjoyed it.
Only two hours in (which is not very far into the game because, evidently, I am not that smart) and im loving every second of it. Its the perfect game for autumn. Lovely tone, a little humor here and there. Feels like getting cozy and watching The X-Files or the good seasons of Supernatural. Highly recommended just based off the tone and characters. The puzzles are fairly challenging, but so far nothing has seemed "unfair" or to be following some kind of moon-logic. Did you like Obra Din? How about Golden Idol? Are you a fan of fall? Like seeing the leaves change color? This is the game for you.
Good game, fascinating storyline. Your source code has some style issues, erroneous use of else if in places that should be just else, and the forced resolution (not aspect ratio, the game is forced in the source code to be 1920x1080) but this doesn't impact the end-user at all If you're interested in a few pointers feel free to hit me up, but this is a very well done game!
Cool world
challenging but immersive, i need more!!!
Really liked the game! There are some pieces that I still do not fully understand but all of the mysteries made sense once you figure out the correct answers. I liked a lot the characters and the whole mystery. Also, the world building behind this game is insane, I'd love to play a sequel or a dlc with these characters diving more into this world. Thank you for your hard work dev!!
Super cool game; awesome atmosphere and interesting mystery and worldbuilding. Game is very immersive and you feel like a detective.
