Okay, this was MUCH, much better than it actually looked on the surface. Yes, it's a Golden-Idol-alike, but as an afficionado of murder mystery games, deductive games, logic puzzles, mysteries in general AND also musicals, this is genuinely one of the most impressive constructions I've seen in a long while. Is it BETTER than Golden Idol? I would say yes, purely on the level design and puzzle of the final case. This may seem like an odd comparison, but it felt more similar to games like Portal, where 90% of the game is pure buildup to the last 10%. Unlike other similar games where the giant levels are also something of a giant headache to keep straight or navigate around, the gameplay and narrative really came together to make it actually feel like you were returning to an old favourite theatre, one that you'd seen grow and change through the years. There is of course the same narrative issue that I have with Golden Idol, which is that there's no real explanation as to who 'you' are or why 'you're' investigating all this, or what the point of you investigating is, which... well, it doesn't HAVE to come up with an explanation for this and I'd say the story works regardless, but personally I do prefer the framing of something like Obra Dinn or Roottrees where you had some (magical, maybe even a little flimsy or handwavey but extant) justification for how 'you' are involved in the world. But that's more of a personal preference, I think, and I'd still highly rec this game. There's a lot more that could be commented about the fun plot and fun-nier characters and the sheer amount of effort that must have gone into the writing, music and art for this game, but a lot of that would be spoilers! And really best experienced by playing it yourself But as someone with a lot of theatre friends, I did find myself going 'hm, yeah, checks out, seems about right' at quite a few points.

Great game in the Golden Idol Genre. Theres nothing that innovative about it, nor is the story particularly surprising. Its a great game though. The clues mostly made sense, and the story was large and interconnected in a satisfying way.
Really great game, the puzzles were fun and made sense. Loved the musical theatre theme.
This game is excellent, a charming investigation game with a fun setting and great production value despite its limited scope. I think this is probably my favorite Golden Idol-like game, so I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of that burgeoning genre. Also, the credits song is really really good, I might just have to go listen to that again!
Very enjoyable, one of the best in the genre.
Didn't realize community theater stirred up these kinds of emotions
Nice small Golden Idol-like about a theater troupe.
A delightfully morbid mystery story told with the Golden Idol interface. (Exactly the Golden Idol interface really, but hey, it's a fun interface, and the credits imply that it has the Golden Idol team's blessing.) I love this sort of narrative deduction game and I'm so happy that it's blossoming into a genre. This one is obviously replete with a massive love for musical theatre, with detailed and committed parodies that go so far as to provide bits of sheet music for original quite-good pastiche songs. It's the sort of pastiche work that hits not only the biggest names like "Sweeney Todd", but things like "Pippin" too (and the fictional "Wuthering" has the Les Mis poster but the song titles imply it's a parody of the "Secret Garden" and/or "Jane Eyre" musicals, right?). I think that Murder at the Birch Tree Theater would appeal to non-MT heads too. (Though, how could I ever know?) It has quite a good story, with a nice pace where complexity and intensity both ramp up in parallel. It's got hand-drawn charm, from the art to the document writing to the puzzle design. Its world feels bigger than its breezy scope. Some things will not be for everyone: • The puzzles are on the straightforward side, especially when compared to Golden Idol. That's no big problem for me - I love this sort of game because I love uncovering a story non-chronologically, and logical challenge is more of a bonus. • The story is bleak and cynical, even with the cartoonish parody setting. It's gonna stick with me for a while, and I do appreciate a big swing, but wow. (Another review here thinks that it goes too far, and while I disagree with their reading of the epilogue scene (which I think portrays a completely different emotion than the one that reviewer says it does), I can't blame anyone for finding it an upsetting story.) • A somewhat janky interface (finicky drag-and-drop, some annoying clicking around for missed clues especially at the end). This part was often frustrating for me. But I don't need perfect polish to enjoy a game. All in all a good time at the theater. Makes me want to make my own narrative deduction game, both because of its earnest labor-of-love quality, and because there ought to be more games with sheet music in them.
