Mordheim: City of the Damned

Tragedy they abandoned this game. I wish they would at least open it up to modders.

The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game should portrait the grim dark, not make their players misserable by essentially rigging the numbers on the AI favour, is pure bs how they'd be dogging eveything, also different factions play the same and is like a 25% of what the tabletop is

This is one of those conflicted up thumbs. Mordheim is not perfect. It has flaws. It has issues. It is also the only game I'm aware of that lets you play with Skaven as the main characters though, and I love my rat boys, so that's enough. The setting of the game is fascinating, and while most of the missions are procedurally generated, there are some that advance your warband's narrative that are hand crafted, and the mix between the two make for quite a grand experience. My only real gripe is that most of the skills in the level up system seem like not just a waste of skill points (metaprogression) but a waste of action points in game as well, especially at low levels. Be sure to read through all the passive skill pages before you buy an active one, IMO most of the passives just outperform on account that they're free power.

I have over 3000 hours in this game over the last 7 years, I always find myself coming back for more. I think this is an amazing Turn Based Tactics game. Requires strategic decision making that is unforgiving when the wrong decisions are made. This is a d100 game, so naturally there will be RNG aspects to attack/resistance rolls where things don't seem like they are happening as they should. Anyone that has been a DM in classic Dice and Paper role playing knows that fudging these rolls add dynamics to the story and I believe the Devs for this game have done a great job at balancing the rolling system out so that sometimes unbelievable results occur, just like in classic RPG format. If everything was truly based on probability only it would be predictable and less challenging to make smart choices. There are endless customization's of party formats so anyone can make a team of characters to play the way they want to play. Wish there was a sequel to this game.

There is a big learning curve for the mechanics. But man! I love this game it awards being patience and will punish you harshly for recklessness.

If you go into the game without expectations, it's a fun time. None of the factions have much of a story, and the matches are extremely slow paced, but the combat system is rigorous enough to be interesting and the different factions satisfy a variety of tastes. It is also a gorgeous game for the era of graphics that it comes from, and is genuinely dripping with atmosphere.

Deeply flawed game for the story missions, but the rest of the game is pretty enjoyable.
