Montabi is a combination of two genres I never imagined would work together: a roguelike deckbuilder like Slay the Spire, combined with creature collecting. It’s a really fresh twist because you can tame monsters, and every monster you capture comes with its own unique deck. As a result, both you and your Montabi have separate decks. As the trainer, you have your own deck, while each Montabi has its own set of cards. Once you have more than one Montabi on the field, you start managing multiple decks that can be combined to create powerful synergies. On top of that, the game adds another strategic layer through positioning. Montabi places a strong emphasis on character placement, so where you position your units and how you move them around the battlefield becomes a challenge in itself. I also really love the art direction. The monsters have a distinct visual identity that doesn’t feel like Pokémon or Digimon. Instead, they’re heavily inspired by real-world objects in a very recognizable way. For example, Hydro is literally based on a fire hydrant. So far, I’ve been really enjoying the game. The difficulty curve is quite steep since you’re expected to learn multiple decks and mechanics right from the beginning. But once everything clicks, it’s incredibly addictive.

This game is great! :steamhappy:
I bought this because "creature collector + deckbuilder" sounded interesting. I stayed because the combat is way deeper than I expected. What really sets Montabi apart is that every Montabi has its own deck. Instead of managing one giant deck like most deckbuilders, you're building a team of Montabi, each with their own cards and playstyle. Every new teammate changes your strategy, and you're constantly thinking about how each deck complements the others. It turns team building into a satisfying puzzle, and discovering powerful synergies between multiple decks never gets old. The 3x3 grid adds so much to every fight. Positioning actually matters, so it's not just about playing your strongest card every turn. Some Montabi want to be on the front line, others support from the back, and figuring out team synergies became my favorite part of the game. I also like that evolution isn't just a stat increase. It unlocks new cards and abilities, making each level-up feel meaningful and giving you even more ways to shape your strategy. I will say the learning curve is pretty steep. There are a lot of mechanics to understand between the multiple decks, positioning, evolutions, and team synergies. If you like Pokemon, Slay the Spire, or tactical RPGs, this is definitely worth checking out.
The game is great, extremely thematic and original, and it has enormous potential for expansions and future content. I would like to leave a few suggestions below for improving the game, based on my experience so far. When playing with a controller, the button to end the turn could be changed to something else, such as the "Start" button, for example. The "Y" button is very easy to press by accident when trying to open the inventory. A confirmation prompt before ending the turn could also solve this issue. Managing too many decks at the same time can become quite exhausting. It might be worth reducing the number of Montabis that can be obtained per run. The iconography is still confusing to me, especially regarding upcoming enemy attacks. I would suggest adding a glossary or redesigning some of the icons. The amount of information displayed when hovering over an enemy can be overwhelming, especially when they have buffs, debuffs, more complex attacks, and so on. I would suggest reworking this, perhaps by displaying only the more specific information and moving more general effects, such as Bleed, ATK Up, and others, to a glossary as well. Overall, I want to congratulate the developers on both the idea and its execution. I’ll definitely keep playing and following the project to stay up to date with future news and developments!
Balancing needs work.
The gameplay is super fun and addictive! The blend of strategy and deck-building mechanics works really well—every battle feels challenging and keeps you thinking hard to build the best strategy. It kind of gives Pokémon vibes but with a deck-building twist that makes it even more exciting. Highly recommended for anyone who loves strategy games! Also loved the art style with a cartoony and unique feel, and the characters are wonderfully varied and distinct. Definitely a joy to look at while playing.
休闲难度打不赢精英关和BOSS关?????
Super fun deckbuilder! The grid tactics are a fun twist on the genre too. The art and soundtrack hit all the arcade-y nostalgia fun factors in the right ways, would highly recommend!
