+ as a deckbuilder and turn based tactics this game is everything i ever wanted. on my first run i built around tonkey who ramps up more damage every time they move, and by the second act i had a proper build for dealing tons of damage by turn 2 and it felt fun trying to build up as fast as possible while dealing with enemy attacks + lots of clever ways to build your team around the carry, e.g. since i was using tonkey i was weak to bleed and it would kill my team (and in fact almost did), so i had ruffen (normally a damage dealer) draft a card that lets you transfer bleed stacks to another guy, which is normally for bleeding enemies but i was basically using it to heal my own bleed, basically making him a tank support. very cool that the game facilitates you doing that + insanely good designs as a creature collector-esque game too, i've seen some really uninspired stuff in other games trying to tap into the genre so this game is pretty top class in that department i think - difficulty system is a little weird i think? having everything unlocked at once kinda makes it the player's responsibility to pick the right difficulty for themselves, and its a little confusing before even playing a single game. for me i know i'll be trying higher difficulty stuff after this because the medium (challenger) was too easy and i found myself almost never needing switching at all, but i think its cool to only have 1 difficulty unlocked at the start and unlock harder with more clears, like in slay the spire - related to the above but lack of an ascension-like system can make the game not very replayable, it was really addicting the first time and i can see myself playing this on repeat for the next few days, but it could easily be months if there was stuff like ascensions to work towards (again like StS)

wow I did not expect to love this game so muchh. Montabi is literally my first deckbuilding game and I found myself playing it again and again. Like there are sooo much combo and skills to try and explore. This game is crazy addicting, can't wait to grind more I hope Montabi can get big and have updates for new rosters in the future!! Please have a playable bird Montabi!!
Helped playtest a lot of the game and GOD it is so good. Really can't put in to words the depth this game has and the sheer amount of content that it offers you. You can play for 100+ hours and not find everything, hell not even find 50% of what the game has to offer (if you suck at deckbuilders like I do lol). Tons of difficulties, Montabi to collect, and cards to gather, a must play.
This is the first true success of a party-based roguelike deckbuilder. The Montabi characters are straightforward enough, generally focusing on one concept each, usually split into a couple possible gimmicks to develop into during a run. That means that it isn't overwhelming to manage up to six decks during a run, with runs being a bit under two hours long. Instead, the depth comes from the interplay of your Trainer, whose deck has a bit wider variety of possible effects, and the combination of Montabi you use. For instance, there's a samurai dog Montabi who always focuses on playing lots of cards, they can either generate a buff as they play cards cheap cards to fuel powerful attacks, or cycle through their deck using a card that duplicates itself and grows in power each time it's played. Pretty simple, but you could use another mon or your Trainer to give it extra card draws, an attack buff, or a variety of other effects, and you can probably see how this starts to get really interesting. My main complaint, which is fairly significant, is that at this point is that the game is quite easy for a genre veteran. After four runs, I've not lost at the hardest difficulty unlocked so far, and have not even needed to use any of the game's consumable items, nor had any of my Montabi knocked out. There are ascensions, but if they do make the game sufficiently harder, it's going to take ages to unlock them. For that reason, I'm not confident the game will maintain my interest in the long term. But it's been extremely fun for the first ten hours and I'm still eager to play more.
I really really really wanted to love this game. But man, some of the montabi and the trainers are so unbalanced. But the worst part is the card pool....i am constantly skipping most cards bc they are trash. I would wait until it gets a bit more balanced to really enjoy it
You can play as sushi and a washing machine - 10/10
Montabi is a combination of two genres I never imagined would work together: a roguelike deckbuilder like Slay the Spire, combined with creature collecting. It’s a really fresh twist because you can tame monsters, and every monster you capture comes with its own unique deck. As a result, both you and your Montabi have separate decks. As the trainer, you have your own deck, while each Montabi has its own set of cards. Once you have more than one Montabi on the field, you start managing multiple decks that can be combined to create powerful synergies. On top of that, the game adds another strategic layer through positioning. Montabi places a strong emphasis on character placement, so where you position your units and how you move them around the battlefield becomes a challenge in itself. I also really love the art direction. The monsters have a distinct visual identity that doesn’t feel like Pokémon or Digimon. Instead, they’re heavily inspired by real-world objects in a very recognizable way. For example, Hydro is literally based on a fire hydrant. So far, I’ve been really enjoying the game. The difficulty curve is quite steep since you’re expected to learn multiple decks and mechanics right from the beginning. But once everything clicks, it’s incredibly addictive.
Best Deckbuilder, Creator Collector game out there!! Countless of team synergies and combinations. Gotta catch them all!
Cute artstyle -> roguelike deckbuilder (hmm.. interesting) -> play one run -> lose >:( -> try again (by the power of determination) -> lose badly -> comeback stronger (love the suffering). 10/10. What makes the suffering so addictive is the game's top-notch design and masterclass balancing. You can't just mindlessly spam cards; you have to calculate movement coordinates, chain synergies, and outsmart dynamic enemy AI. Combined with a unique urban trendy artstyle (please make it into collectibles!), crisp UI tooltips, and unique playable montabi, Montabi is a hidden gem for rogue-like deckbuilder fans. Add to library and test if ur brain cells can survive cute pixels wrecking your soul ✨
