Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.14/day in the week to Aug 13 → 2.14/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

LMAO, nostalgia is dangerous, and the truth hurts! No, you didn't grow up playing Metal Slug. You actually grew up playing the Chinese knockoff called Metal Slug: Special Mission on Y8.com. No wonder things looked and felt different, lol. Good times, though!

Same as the first game but with more characters and enemies. Most of my review is identical to my review of Metal Slug (https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025317792/recommended/3660220/), so I recommend reading that if you want a review of all the same elements as the first. It’s very similar from the first game: similar graphics, similar length, similar enemies and attacks, and even similar bosses. So, if you like Metal Slug, you’ll like Metal Slug 2. If you don’t like it, you might like the slightly greater diversity but couldn’t like it much more than the first. The Positives: -You get to select from four characters, and there are more enemies in this game, from middle-eastern warriors to mummies to aliens. It’s much more diverse in terms of what you encounter, and that makes the game more engaging. -The same positives from the first apply here, from the good graphics and fun gameplay for the era, the decent port (assuming the game plays at the same speed and with the same controls as the arcade original), and the fast pace and doesn’t-overstay-its-welcome length (I love 1- to 2-hour games under certain conditions—e.g., something gimmicky shouldn’t be long or it’ll get repetitive quickly). -They played the formula for fans of the first to a T: keep everything they loved about the first game the same, and just do more—more characters, environments, enemies…even the “Go to space!” trope is somewhat done with the aliens (technically, that’s them coming from space and not you going to space, but it’s close). -I believe they added the shotgun from the first game (at least, I never got a shotgun in the first game; there’s also a laser gun, but I had it for all of 10 seconds) and added to the vehicles as well, which were interesting. The Negatives: -Unfortunately, being similar means it has the same flaws as the first. I still can’t drop down—have to find a gap. You still can only shoot in four directions (not counting the angled shots while changing the direction of your aim), and the jump-and-shoot-down combination is just as annoying as the first since there are downward enemies. Get used to jumping and shooting down hundreds of times against two bosses and a few boats. There are still some inconsistencies around what you will and won’t get hit by on the screen (this time, the aliens got me, as I could run and stab some and then die trying against others). I still kept jumping and shooting in the wrong direction against bosses that required you to move left and right back and forth quickly while jump-shooting to hit them. It’s all still there. -One of the bosses is nearly repeated verbatim from the first game: the sewer/water boss that you jump and shoot down at. Other than additions to its attack pattern (horizontal balls), it’s identical. -The coin-suckage gameplay became very noticeable on the last level. It’s made to make you pay when you’re so close to the end. Examples include another tanks-everywhere screen like the first one where there’s literally no where you can stand without getting hit and then get “camped” by respawning over them and then the boss that keeps spawning aliens that keep shooting in all directions until you die, at which point they leave the screen so you can hit the boss again when you respawn. -I loved the character select option and appreciated that you could change characters after a continue, but I kept forgetting that I could do that and would either wonder why I wasn't reappearing on the screen or would accidentally change characters before getting back into the game. One of those times where I triggered an achievement by complete accident when the "play as all characters" one popped just from me accidentally reentering the game as a character to the left or right of the one I was playing as. -There’s a cheesy ripoff of Independence Day at the end. -I heard that Metal Slug X is also available on Steam and is basically just an enhanced Metal Slug 2, so maybe you want to get that instead? Note: to be clear, this is not the preservation developers’ fault but rather how SNK originally released Metal Slug 2 and the updated version Metal Slug X in 1998 and 1999, respectively. So, restoring them both is just good game preservation rather than any kind of cash grab or modern monetization trick. Overall, if you like run-and-gun games, this is one of the OGs. I never played it originally in the arcades since I had side-scrollers at home and the Neo Geo cabinet’s games never really interested me, but it’s fun spending an hour decades later enjoying it for what it is (without spending the $6 it’d take for me to play it back then in 1999 dollars). It’s even cheaper now that you can get it for less than $2, so I saved a ton of money waiting over 25 years! (joking) I had fun with it and the first one, and I love the feeling of occasionally beating games quickly after playing a 100-hour game like Final Fantasy X. Sometimes, you just want to play a game, get sucked in for an hour, and that’s it. No 20-minute updates, no 2-hour character customization, no weapon and armor drops that you have to spend 5 minutes selling, breaking down, or replacing your current gear with after every battle or two. I love the deep games, but having a few brief, pure games are great for your brain and make you feel good about adding to your list of completed games.
Nostalgia
I've only ever played the Steam release of this game, but I could tell early on that this was an arcade port. ...and a SOLID one at that!
