I think there’s a certain amount of Stockholm syndrome with Battletech/MechWarrior games where people are just happy to get one at all but this is just not a good game. It’s an inferior product to Mercenaries in every way, sure it has nice cutscenes but the acting isn’t all that great. I refunded after a few hours but from what I played the missions were painfully boring, walk from waypoint to waypoint shooting enemy mechs that still have awful AI despite all the work the community has done in Mercenaries to fix stuff like that. Enemies still get dropped right on top of you or just spawn out of a literal monster closet right next to you when you reach a certain trigger point. Maybe it opens up later but every mission I played was just being funneled through narrow canyons until it opened up to a wider area where there would be a fight which you’d clear and then go in to the canyon towards the next one. The real final straw for me was when looking at the mechs I could eventually purchase I thought maybe once I ranked up and got some more stuff I’d be a little more forgiving. I finished the fourth or so mission and saw all the mechs I’d unlocked only to be greeted by most of the mechs listed for sale being DLC that I didn’t have. Instead of the 10 or so options I thought I had it was actually only 2… The only real positive thing I can give Clans is that in co-op everyone has a lot more control over all the aspects of the meta game but that’s also something that mods can fix in Mercenaries so it’s a bit of a backhanded compliment. Even on sale for $14.99 the base game felt like a rip off.

The Battlegrid options don't actually work. My commands aren't followed by my starmates nor do they attack. They just stand at way points and get shot to death. This is no fun.
After playing this, I am pretty sure the devs just use the clan terms but do not really know what they mean. There is no escapism here. The 1st one was "ok". Ghost Bear was a joke. Clan's don't use ASF's and Union Class drop ships in Bachal's or Trails. That defeats the whole "Mech Warrior" honor thing. I didn't even try the last DLC. The engine has the same problems. The have fixed nothing. You can see your laser shots go through the mechs and out the other side... yes its that bad in some instances. The maps are small, and narrow, you don't really get to feel the Clans long range superiority as everything is in your face. The mechs hit boxes are gigantic, easy to head shot. The diagrams look like they are from the 70's box set. At least they gave you the correct mech lab, but thats really the only shinning part. The stories are meh, the characters are not very engaging. You don't even get to pilot the protagonist as default. MW5 did a better job than MW Clans in that aspect. Not worth it for 5 hours at 20 bucks. My humble opinion.
A solid entry in the mechwarrior series. Unlike MW5 mercs which is more of a sandbox game, this is a linear story campaign. It's definitely long enough to justify the price, I enjoyed it overall even though enemies can become very spongey and you need to kind of metagame your player mechs to survive in the endgame. The only downside I can really see for this game is the incredibly limited selection of mechs especially without DLC. If you don't own either of the 2 story dlcs about half of the roster will just sit there, taunting you telling you that you can't use these without the dlc.
Apart from the UE5 graphics and a coherent (however stupid) campaign, this is a direct downgrade from MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in almost every way. In fact, it plays like a mobile cashgrab in most aspects, since most features feel slapped on as if just to slow down the player's progression and make them pay to skip the grind.
Meta game:
Available mechs are limited by your reputation/honor/player level. You get an extra level for every 2 (later 3) campaign missions you complete. Your performance does not matter, but there are arbitrary numbers affixed to the progression to make it look like you're "earning more honor" from later missions. You unlock new mechs with [strike]Kudos[/strike] Merits. You can't loot them. You can not have an assault mech until you're this honorable. Your maximum mech weight is increased by 5 per honor level. There are 1-2 mechs per weight, more if you own the DLC. Each new mission increases your tonnage slightly. The total tonnage is almost always below 5x maximum available mech weight. Your mechs' upgrades and omnipods are purchased with Platform XP. Platform XP is gained for each platform individually, at a glacial pace, you never gain enough mech XP to max out a platform before a "Weight+5" platform becomes available unless you spend hours farming Platform XP in horde mode. For every run of Horde mode you get 150 platform XP for each mech, regardless of your performance. The optimal way is to run five of the same mech, periodically upgrading them all by 20-25 tons (with a couple mid-weght mechs to balance out the mission tonnage) Your research speed (because. you know, every separate star in a clan's galaxy needs to research all the gear upgrades on their own) is tied to the number of scientists you have and your science lab's upgrade level. The materials you need for research are looted from missions and you get roughly 200-300 of each per mission (plus any from caches you scanned), with the ability to redistribute numbers within your maximum amount. You buy scientists, upgrade levels and the ability to loot extra material with Merits. Your mechs are repaired by technicians, at most 5 per mech. You buy extra technicians and upgrade the mechlab with... [strike]Kudos[/strike] Merits, you guessed it. So, Merits... You get a certain amount of them at every honor level up. There is no other way to get them. But you see how the game is absolutely designed around Merits being a premium currency you would be totally able to buy with real money, right? :D At least the horde mode for XP farming is free.
Gameplay:
Your best weapon is the ER S Laser. Low weight, low heat, respectable range when upgraded, quite high DPS per heat/weight. Everything else is objectively worse. The Gauss feels like a potato cannon. SRMs are great but why waste valuable slots on ammunition when you have the almighty ER S Laser? You don't see actual stats after campaign missions, just a bunch of "XP reward amounts" for each of your pilots. How effective was the LRMboat captain? Eh, who knows... When on the missions, you are strictly herded in a direction and not allowed to move out of bounds. The bounds only change after some important dialogue has happened. But not always, sometimes you have to leave the area and come back for the game to witness you. You are limited to 2x zoom and that is final. No upgrades to improve that, no mods (because nobody is interested, I guess). On the other hand, you rarely have the chance to fight anything beyond 500-600 meters for any significant length of time, since the enemies just rush you like a Beheaded Kamikaze from Serious Sam.
Final Thought:
Clans seems to be an attempt to appeal to the wider audience that falls on both sides of the tightrope at once, painfully so. It's nowhere nearly as freeform and deeply customizable as Mercs and it's nowhere as interesting and streamlined as most "kill it all with more dakka" games, as it demands following rigid yet pointless rules and jumping through hoops, but doesn't really offer anything in return. Best buy it at a large discount to play the campaign on Easy or skip it altogether. Unless you know better than me.
Scratches my Mechwarrior itch. The format is quite likeable and a welcome change to the Mercenaries sandbox. I appreciate the attention to the details of Battletech lore and the Mech gameplay works very well. Yes, there is room for improvement, especially with quality control, but overall the game is pretty good. I'm looking forward to the DLCs.
A much more polished version of MWO 5: Mercenaries for the Clans perspective. This takes things like the open map out of the game as you work for the Clans and the Mech Lab and pilot system are very different but I enjoy them the same, in a way playing this made Mercenaries easier for me. The only thing that I don't like is that it doesn't show your damage dealt and taken after a match, only an award for highest and lowest on your lance in that category. Still, a very solid addition to the franchise. I have all the expansions now too, looking forward to playing a Jade Falcon campaign one day.

Less free wheeling than Mercs and less fun. Strict mission pacing is less forgiving and traps you.
Hope they fix the crashes and Co-Op disconnecting between every single mission. Also poorly optimised, but otherwise a fun game once fixed.
