About

Exorcise the infernal and exact vengeance in this unholy roguelite deckbuilder from David Gaider and Summerfall Studios. The city teems with demons and among them lies your prey: Malys, a demon of extraordinary cunning and power.
As you pick your path through the city, you’ll encounter its denizens - some friendly, some not so much, and some possessed by demons that you’ll need to exorcise. Use your deck to expose the rot within. Find unique combinations and strategies to withstand the miseries. Help the hopeless and free the possessed, or die in the attempt… over and over again.
As Noah, former priest turned exorcist and demon hunter, you’re armed with your faith and a variety of tools ranging from the holy to the dark and arcane… but you’ll need much more for this hunt, and there will be precious few allies to provide them.
Written by David Gaider (former BioWare Lead Writer on the Dragon Age series and Creative Director on Summerfall’s own Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical), Malys is our unholy roguelite deckbuilder, with a beautifully hand-illustrated style.

Your cards reflect your actions - invoking holy and ancient powers through prayer and chanting, or equipment like holy water and purified salt. In order to play cards, you must burn cards first to light candles - making every hand a series of strategic decisions and sacrifices.
Succeed at exorcisms and receive a reward of Faith, a currency you can spend along your path. Use it to add, upgrade or remove cards, heal your Will, or buy Curios, run-long passive effects that add both power and different ways to play.
Improve your strategy and chance of success. Fail, die, and try again.

In an exorcism, your candles will light the way. You'll encounter a possessed host, desperate for your help. Burn cards in your hands to light candles, and use their holy power to play the other cards in your hand.
Every hand is a choice: Which cards will you burn and which will you play? Candles are persistent between turns, and become a strategic challenge; will you use all your remaining candles this turn, or preserve some for the next?
Manage your Will, Noah's capacity to endure evil. Completing an exorcism does not restore your Will, and you'll need to decide what sacrifices to make and what paths to take in order to succeed. Run out of Will and your night comes to an end.

Demons hide within their hosts to maintain their power, and the first step to wrestling that power away from more powerful demons is to reveal their True Name. You’ll need to Expose these demons in order to gain the upper hand and begin to take control of the exorcism.

Now revealed and threatened, you must Endure the full measure of the demon’s wrath. Use every part of your arsenal to destroy its Will while protecting your own. Fail, and lose yourself and the host to darkness.

Once weakened, the time comes to Expel the demon for good.
But beware — a desperate demon may draw on the life force of its host to power its most terrible abilities: protect the host or all is lost.

In Malys, death is not the end. Start the night over from the beginning, with only Noah and a select few aware of the horrors that have occurred. Noah must begin his hunt again.

A qualified yes from me. I can see this game becoming very repetitive over time since there's only one exorcist and you can play him three different ways. Unless and until there are updates, that's it. The gameplay is good for me and the mana generation system is a definite plus and adds a layer of strategy to combat, but the game does a very poor job of warning the player when he's about to take damage from minions. Demons can deal damage to the player through minions and many is the time when I've taken significant damage without any warning from the game. Demon damage is well detailed, but minion damage isn't and that's cost me two runs out of the first four I've played. "Higher demons", or what would be called elite combats in other games, can be very drawn out even at the initial levels. There are higher demons that the player must defeat three times in a single exorcism before advancing, and I've only played on the first level of the game. To me, that's excessive. But, if you'll pardon the pun with this game, there are really good bones here. The art is terrific, the dialogue (on first playthrough) is sharp, and again, the mana generation system is creative and solid. I'm not sure I'd have done a full release on this game the way it's currently structured, though. The QOL issues I mentioned earlier are significant drawbacks, but if you can get past them. Malys is worth your time.

Could have been a really good game- I really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the combat. Unfortunately, the combat system isn't complex enough to work in a roguelike without meta progression- something I think the game desperately needs. The narrative is interesting if you read it, but since it's all in big exposition dumps, it's hard to actually pay attention to. I can feel that this game, having not completed its Kickstarter, probably didn't get the time/resources it needed. Unfortunately, what we were left with isn't really worth it- the fights are slow, the narrative scenarios are repetitive, and the intrigue of the plot falls away for me very quickly, despite my love for a lot of the characters (Gideon.. ^_^) The presentation is as impressive as always, though, and there's good bones here- I do think Summerfall will make a great deckbuilder in the future- I'd love to see the repeated themes of sacrifice and candle-lighting to be reused in something grander.
Slay The Spire + John Constantine.
It's a cool idea, nice mechanics, but the game doesn't have much replayability.

After a hundred plus hours playing this game I struggle to give it a positive review. I love the theme and style, but it just has too many bugs to worth anyone else purchasing it.
Genuinely fun enough game, similar to slay the spire but with less memorisation of enemy attack patterns and a more reasonable difficulty ramping. Could use a rebalancing of some decks archetypes, the most interesting deck is allies but is also the weakest of the decks. Card draw with miracles, and defensive heavy decks seem the strongest. As a suggestion I would say the ability to reroll shops would be worth while, in particular the card and curios shops would allow the player to be more flexible in their deck building. The unique shop types are probably the most interesting part of the game.
Well you get what you see — you LITERALLY ONLY get what you see. Highly repetitive and hardly engaging. There should be some in-depth content or at least sth meaningful... pity, I seen none.
I actually found this game to be extremely compelling, and intensely disappointing. First, the narrative elements are mostly well done, and add an extra layer to the game which is captivating. I stopped to read basically every unique encounter because they were all so well written, from each of the characters who act as merchants basically, to the simple descriptions leading up to even basic enemy encounters, which are worth reading through. The overall atmosphere that is cultivated and especially, ESPECIALLY, the visual design is probably some of the best that I have ever come across in a game, ever. Some of the enemy designs are breathtaking. I would like to think that generally I have a really high tolerance for horror media, I engage with horror media a lot, but some of the enemy designs here are actually, legitimately unsettling. Especially the mini-boss ones which are illustrated to be staring literally directly at you, it's actually slightly hard to pull your eyes off of them to look down at the cards, it's a borderline immersive experience. The gameplay mechanics, when they work and everything goes well, are super fun. I like the resource mechanics more than something like Slay the Spire, especially because of how all of the mechanics are carefully and intricately weaved into the aesthetics of the game's setting. Unfortunately, I give this game a thumbs up because I want to support it somehow, even though a positive Steam review means basically nothing at this point, but I can't seriously say that I recommend it broadly. But there is so much potential here it's crazy. This could be such, such an incredible game. But it looks totally and completely abandoned. Like the production value is so clearly insane. A complex, obviously professionally very well written narrative with tons of dialogue, so many incredibly detailed illustrations, it's obvious that a team of people really worked on this. But there's like not even more than a couple hundred Steam reviews and a tiny amount of social media presence which fizzled out like a year ago. Just, how is that even possible!? Regardless, it looks like the last update was over 6 months ago, and going off of how much attention this is getting I can't even blame them for abandoning it. It must be kind of crushing to make something this good and to have it not be appreciated in the way that it should. But gosh, so much of the experience of playing it just sucks. It's buggy beyond belief. Mechanics not working like they should. Visual glitches. Dialogue glitching and just not playing. Random blank screens. It's non-stop. And the balancing is horrible. The glow deck is totally broken, you just snowball every single fight and it's clear that an appropriate counter to the glow mechanic was never implemented. But the initial damage based deck is horrible. You get whittled down as debuffs get stacked harder and harder while the deck lacks both resources and defense. And like other people have pointed out, the length of the mini-boss fights is ridiculous. I had one which went over 40 turns, they can literally take like 30 minutes if you really draw it out and truly fight for your win. It sucks to play the game knowing that none of these things will ever be fixed, and this wonderful example of how good a video game can be as an interactive art-form will just rot further into obscurity. Most gamers would probably be immediately hostile to these sorts of things but it's nice that Malys includes elements of diversity. It's done in a way which I didn't find to be patronizing, othering, and without drawing unnecessary attention to theses topics. UPDATED THOUGHTS: After playing another 20 or so hours I've found that Malys has undeniably grown on me. Once you get a hang of the flow of each "exorcism" then the balancing feels much more even across each deck and run. At first I thought that the miniboss-esque exorcisms were too long, with three phases and several hundred health usually for each phase 2 and 3, I've found now that it's really not bad at all and once you have a decent deck going you'll just completely blow through everything without any resistance. At first I thought that the game was stacked against the player, but now I'm consistently having runs where it feels basically impossible to die, when you have like 7 phantom, 200 shield, and a mini-boss at like 20 shackle consistently. Card draw is really the number 1 thing, you can get like three or four hands in a single turn while also cutting the cost of pretty much all cards down to 0 for a whole turn. Actually feels really good to pull off. Still, it's just obviously an abandoned, discarded gem of a game. Love the characters too, they're all interesting in their own right and feel well fleshed out. It's nice to see how the MC's and other character's relationships grow, I really like the MC and the hot demon guy as a pair, if this game had the audience it deserved there would be literally so much fanfic stuff of those them.
