EDIT: A recent AMA from the developers actually angered me enough that I wish I could return the game (I bought it a very long time ago when it was still EA). The statement that "Locking On can't move between targets because of PVP design" is infuriating. Basic gameplay mechanics should never be designed for PVP first, especially with terrible, janky, unpleasant-to-work-with netcode. You should always assume that the PVP crowd will be smaller than the PVE or co-op crowd. Always. And Dark Souls figured out how to let Lock-On switch between targets when you kill a guy and it didn't impact their PVP at all. That's a lame, bad excuse. Further, "we won't allow locking on to enemy weak points because they're something to show off skill." No, they aren't. The bosses have so much HP and there are so many enemies on the field that not being able to lock on is a genuine negative on every level. This is bad. This is a bad developer attitude. Don't buy this game. If they change that, then I'll update the review to a yes, but that attitude is very, very, very bad. Also: seriously, you can't figure out how to have a shield and a sword out at the same time? Or a gun and a shield out at the same time? Don't make excuses. Armored Core figured out how to do that when it came out on PSX. That's basic Gundam stuff, man. You're making a Gunpla fantasy game, figure it out. Finally, stating that they want to do more parts for DLC, but not more missions or campaign stuff, is a real red flag. The parts are almost entirely cosmetic. The game is too half-baked to start thinking about cosmetic DLC. It, uh, needs some work. The building side of the game is fantastic. Everybody says it. It's cool as hell. The game doesn't care what your robot looks like, so you can make a Gundam, or an Armored Core, or (probably) a Battlemech (I really haven't tried). The menus are awful. Controls can be rebound, but are janky in unnecessary ways, especially on controller. The UI does not clearly state what an enemy's weakness is even when you have the part equipped. You have to squint at one of the white symbols right next to the enemy - which is incredibly difficult when there are waves upon waves of fast-moving monsters coming at you. Some weapon types are just useless. What's the point of a one-hand ranged grip if I can't equip a shield in my off-hand? Why can't I dual-wield pistols or rifles? You're trying to do Gunpla - do Gunpla! It's a glaring error in an otherwise-fantastic customization system. Then there's the bosses. Good Lord. An endless stream of minions to refill ammunition is fine - but they need to spawn at a much slower rate. The bosses have entirely too much HP and deal entirely too much damage to have the shield + stagger bar mechanic that they do. As a result it turns into a slugfest that is very much not in your favor. Overall, it's not...*bad*, but it needs some polish. Rebalancing. Et cetera. Oh, and it desperately needs an editor. I assume this game is ESL. It reads like it. I'll definitely change my "no" to a "yes" should these issues be resolved.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

To actually like this game you must like mech building sims in general or maybe model kit building. the combat isnt all that amazing but you need to remember the subtitle of the game. BUILDER. Pros of combat. - -tight controls that are responsive and snappy (although some people dislike snappy i think its nice) -decent enemy variation between different types of minions and bosses. -amazing combat capabilities that tie in soo well with the build of your mech. -its not always a mindless beat em up. you sometimes have side objectives or hazards that bring variety to gameplay. -bosses appear to be a slog at first look, however once you learn how to beat them you realize there is structure and attack patterns you can master. cons of combat (not many i know lol im sorry i just genuinely like the game) - -ONE SPECIFIC WEAPON IS BUGGED SO BAD IT IS COMPLETELY NON FUNCTIONAL. its any of the beam damage type of the energy launcher. upon firing the beam it sustains for a second or so and then disappears and kinda locks you up. just dash or use a melee weapon to break the lockup. after disappearing the annoying and earbleeding beam sound never goes away, you must leave the vacinity if you dont want tinnitus. -personally i dislike auto lock features in any game but in this one its particularly annoying. i say that because it doesnt lock to whatever enemy is closest to you. it seems to lock to whatever enemy is closer to the center of your view. that can be anything. it could be a dude hundreds of meters away. auto lock dont care boo. -your camera follows so far back in combat. you spend so much time making your dream mech and you have to squint to see any cool detail mid fight. I HAVE NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE BUILDING SYSTEM AT THE MOMENT SO I WILL JUST LIST POSITIVES -I made a zaku. -Its a zaku that is theoretically made from gundanium alloy therefore making it also a gundam. -Did i mention its a gundam zaku???? -(done with lame jokes) You can do SO MUCH with this building system if youre passionate about creating something youll love. If a part you like from a mech doesnt already exist in the game, you can just make a close replica of that part using the wonderful accessory part manipulation system. you can scale the item across any plane or uniformally and also place more than enough parts to create your ideal head or chest etc. you can also paint it however you wish (albeit with some limitation). -theres aslo a decal system that is pretty nice too :) its got all the little caution warnings and stuff that a realistic mech could ever need. you can also place the decals anywhere on the mech with little exception. you just click whatever surface you want to place the decal on and you then move the decal and scale it however you like on a flat plane attached to the surface. surface wrapping is also a possibility so you can place decals on round surfaces. All in all. id say this game is a 7/10 in my book. the mech building is absolutely orgaaaasmic. however, the actual gameplay being somewhat mid does bring it down by 2 points for me. and the 3rd removed point is specifically because of the distance of the camera in combat.
Version 1.0.0 Update - Written September 30th, 2025
What's the difference between Early Access and "Full Release"? Unfortunately for the case of M.A.S.S. Builder, almost NOTHING. It's too little, too late, as is always the case with this game. In the span of over two years since my original review, virtually nothing I took issue with has been measurably improved. There's a couple new weapons, cosmetic weapon attaching is a thing now, the impossible Very Hard bosses got slightly nerfed (but they're still impossible), but basically this is the same game as when I first played it. I understand Vermillion Digital has like 7 people employed. Yet I have to ask, is this the best they can do? Is there too much technical debt and spaghetti code to revitalize the game at this point?
Original Review from August 19, 2023:
Superb cosmetic customization. Okay graphics, albeit it makes my GPU run way hotter than it has any right to. Inoffensive music. Very okay to mediocre sound effects. Completely uninteresting story and forgettable characters. Unfortunately for M.A.S.S. Builder, the gameplay is the most important component to a video game, and that is where it completely falls apart. The combat ranges from ~okay~ to horrible and infuriating. Mech/weapon parts only really effect things cosmetically, so all of the weapons will feel the same for the entire game, and they feel weak and ineffectual. The sound effects leave a lot to be desired, especially for melee. A 200 ton metal great maul impacting an alien apparently sounds like a stock punching sound effect. Enemies are bullet sponges, many of which will have little to no reaction whatsoever when you hit them, no matter what you hit them with. Worst of all is the infinitely respawning mobs during bosses, CONSTANT projectile and AOE spam, sometimes combined with area hazards. It seems like very little thought went into designing some missions, the worst of which feel totally unplayable at higher difficulties. Most tangible upgrades come from ability skill trees, which increase anything ranging from health, shields, damage dealt, damage received, boosting, ammo pools and reloading, to special effects like doing an AOE when shooting things or doing a melee combo. While these are important, the balance could be better. If you want to actually deal halfway decent damage, you cripple your frame's defense and fuel economy. If you want the defense to be able to survive harder missions, you sacrifice your damage and fuel economy. Melee is able to get more shields, health and armor to cope. Ranged playstyles in comparison are a lot more fragile and overly rely on boosting to get out of harm's way. Other than the mediocre combat, the grind is the worst part of the game. M.A.S.S. Builder demands a truly obscene amount of time to grind for blueprints, credits, resources, upgrades, etc. You will find yourself spamming the same mission a hundred times just to buy new upgrades to overcome the newest roadblock. You'll do a few more story missions, then it will happen again. And again. And again. It gets worse, by the way. You might think you can skirt by just investing in upgrades for a particular playstyle, and maybe you can. But the game gives you incentive for unlocking everything, which exponentially increases the grind. The devs could quadruple the amount of credits and resources you get per mission and the grind would STILL be bad. Do I recommend M.A.S.S. Builder? I'm leaning towards no. The game has been out and in development for a very long time, and many of the problems people have with the game have not been fixed, including mine. That isn't to say there isn't any hope, or that the game is dead, but the game has been out for like 4 years now. Progress is glacial. Chances are if you're really itching for a mech game with customization, you're probably going to get this anyways, but temper your expectations. And/or get it on sale.
This game has been in development for about 7 years now and not only have they not added the 2 new frames I bought the game for like 5 years ago they really haven't added much at all. On top of this they just did a QA where they just answered like 80 questions with "NO" effectively and made stupid excuses for them. I've seen games made by 2 people add more in a year than these guys have in 7!

An amazing customisation suite, in a frankly dogsh*t video game. I bought this years ago with the hopes it'd improve but it really hasn't, and the dev's attitude ain't great either. If you wanna make gundam style mechs and take photos? Great. Anything else? Don't bother.
as of right now? no, i would not recommend, i bought this game to play with friends but the multiplayer is broken and according to the steam forums, it has been for some time. if you want to play a mech game with friends? its in another castle
Bought this game years ago on early access. Didn't think much of it. Wanted to let it cook. Of course it would be "missing features" or just feel unfinished. It's now 2026 and I reinstalled the game to try it out. Only good thing? Very indepth mech customization when it comes to appearance. Music is whatever, visuals are whatever, little anime waifus in the basic cutscenes are whatever. Negatives? The actual gameplay. So we'll have to compare this to Armored Core 6, because that's probably the mecha standard these days. Unless you like the more clunky boxy mechs, that'd probably be Mechwarrior 5. Anyway, how do I put this. There's too much customization when it comes to weapons and mech design; to the point that it appears weight/mass don't matter, and you don't actually have any useable default guns or weapons. I mean, you do, but, it's not as simple as choosing Machine gun, pistol, sniper, rocket launcher, whatever. You mix and match several different parts that aren't descriptive enough to understand what the end result will be, so you'll do that and go on a mission to test it out in the first few seconds then abandon so you can try a new combo. The combat itself is fine, dodgy fast paced, clear projecting from enemy attacks, hoards, bosses. It just gets weird if you're trying to figure out elemental damages to whatever you are fighting because weapon damage is weird. You have to make all your weapons. Also there's several massive skill tree things with unlockable skills and % boosts. It's fine. It works. It gives you something to grind for. Maybe there's a test weapon mode. Maybe there's a more description mode. You know what sucks? having to pull up youtube and reddit threads to understand how to make a gun in this game, and all the videos and threads are 5 years old with some outdated information, or it's a 360p video with a guy using his phone to record his screen, god bless his heart. Anyway, I was trying to get into the game. It has a lot of potential. Which is what I told myself years ago. And the game still feels unfinished. You know what I love in mech games? Having dual wielding. I just like having the same gun in the left and right hand, even if it's not an optimal build. Apparently this game won't have dual because of multiplayer balance issues. And that's where I gave up. There's not enough good singleplayer mech games and they're over here chasing multiplayer and trying to balance and all this crap and the base game doesn't even feel good. Know how I had to find out all this? I chased an abandoned Steam discussions thread a few years old, and then chased down their discord where a few kind players who still like the game let me know. I like how in Armored Core, or Mechwarrior, you can pick a base mech, base guns, and you know what you're getting at first. Then, you can start swapping bodyparts and weapons, and finetuning them. This game, every mech build basically feels the same. There's no difference except aesthetically. There are "default weapons" but you're going to be so lost on how to get a different default weapon. Anyway maybe I suck and maybe I'm a dumb noob that doesn't know what they're doing. But that's kind of the point. I love mech games. Been playing Mechwarrior and Armored Cores since PS1. Played Steel Battalion on that big dumb controller. Wasted plenty of quarters in arcades in that big dumb mechwarrior bubble that shakes. You might have fun with this game. Unfortunately I didn't, even after throwing money at them and waiting several years.
