Hm what can I say..The game isn't that great really. The "dark humor" was sometimes funny but few of the scenes were just disgusting. But not disgusting in a way "haha he hung himself" but in a way that can be seen as portraying a child sexually.
I'm talking here about the scene when Misfortune rides a horse and the scene where she got stuck in the small window and her buttcheeks just were exposed for no reason. I understand it was supposed to be funny but how? Most of the players are adults or teens so they dont laugh at fart humor anymore. There was no need for that scene.
If it was somehow a methaphor about Misfortune being a SA victim it would be more justifiable. But it isnt. There is no mention or hints about it, its not being talked about in game at all so we can only assume it wasn't the intention. Another reason is I found this game just truly boring. You walk, sometimes can throw glitter or touch few things but thats all. What I did like about this game though, would be the music, surrondings and
the fact that she's been dead the whole game. Her own father being the one that killed her was a huge plus since it made it all a lot more depressing. I also liked the idea of the fox being her spirit guide
I also feel like the choices didn't matter at all but the game and the moment when you had to choose made it look like there would be huge consequences but in reality it wasn't that important. The last thing I feel lacking is the connection to characters. It feels as even though we've been with Misfortune the whole time we dont really know her or her family situation. it would be nice to see more of that side. I reccomend playing it if you got it for free
The game had me sobbing for like 5 mins on the ending. I won the game on the first attempt, and it’s so depressing. I love the metaphors. Poor Misfortune.
I understand the point of the game is to show that it's a mean old world out there, especially through the eyes of a child. But did we really need people crapping and puking every 10 minutes? It was constant and totally unnecessary. At one point, our heroine giggles with delight when she steps in dog crap and then immediately pukes in disgust. At another point, a mother cow craps in a calf's face literally blowing him away. Hey, we can even earn an achievement by making our heroine throw up. How exciting! Later we have to climb into a hole in the wall and our "heroine" proceeds to hang onto the wall while scolding her "little butt crack" for making too much noise. That's right. We have to sit and listen to her flatulence accompanied by images of a green cloud. It felt like something a teenager would find hilarious. Maybe the developers got a kick out of it, but it wasn't funny or intriguing to have to watch this over and over. There were also sexual innuendos throughout the game. Not necessarily a bad thing for adults. But why are the developers trying to sexualize a child? At one point, the heroine lifts up her dress in a public area and we get a close up of her bare belly and lower body clad only in dirty tights. But the worst part was having an 8 year old lament that she didn't have "titties" to show the clerk to get into the zoo free. Not only was this in poor taste but it was also just gross. It felt like the developers were either trying to make their audience uncomfortable or make them feel ashamed.. There's a way to imply child abuse/neglect without making a little kid talk and act like a skeeze. And her voice was also very irritating. The voice actress couldn't seem to decide if she was Spanish or Russian. Yet the game is set in Sweden. The game was written by a husband/wife team. With all the vivid descriptions of Misfortune's parents drinking, abusing, and cheating on each other, they must have a really healthy marriage! LOL Even though the game was intriguing, there just wasn't enough to do. There's no inventory and all we really do is click to make her walk and answer a few questions that may or may not affect the outcome of the game. More of an interactive fiction game than a true adventure.
Little Misfortune is another wonderfully weird adventure that manages to be dark, funny and surprisingly charming all at the same time. This Little Lady telling people to go give themselves a f**k, is honestly comedy gold. While it’s not quite as crazy or unsettling as Fran Bow, it has its own unique charm and personality that makes it super fun to play. The graphics are cute and colourful. My only real gripe was having to play through the game twice for some of the trickier achievements. There isn't a huge amount of replayability once you've experienced the story, but that's more of an achievement hunter problem than an issue with the game itself.
In the 3 hours I spent with Little Misfortune, I laughed and I cried, I was ashamed and proud, disgusted and endeared. I was heartbroken, still am a little, to be fair, but also ended the game with a soft smile. Everything you heard about this game is true, and then some. Especially if you have played Fran Bow before - which isn't necessary, but *strongly* recommended - you will find Little Misfortune more of a visual novel than a point & click adventure. Puzzles are hardly worth mentioning, but there is lots of interactivity and choices to make. Choices that beg for a replay of the game - after my first go I had 17/35 achievements unlocked - but as much as I want to, I can't, not yet. Little Misfortune is fantastic. It looks fantastic, sounds fantastic, I'm sure if it could, it'd smell fantastic (although, come to think of it, no, no it wouldn't) but it's especially fantastic at making you feel things. Uncomfortable things. Painful things. As any good art should. And I guess that's the bottom line: Little Misfortune is one of those games that beyond the shadow of a doubt proves that this medium is just as good a vehicle for art as any. And Killmonday Games are artists.
