Incredible game if you like old school dungeon crawlers and visual novels. Play labyrinth of Refrain first though

This is my first "Labyrinth of" game, so some of this may come across as obvious to anybody that's played the previous game. Still, 100+ hours in, I think I've got a grip on what's up with this game, mostly. First off, it's a grid-based party first-person RPG, something that goes back to at least the early Ultima games (yes, I'm old). It's well-done, with terrain types and mechanics I've never seen before, and lacking some of the more obnoxious features of earlier games of its type. Full marks for this part of the game, but know that I had to look up what to do next a few times when the game basically kept saying "go out and explore" when I already had the map explored, as best I could tell. When you get into combat, the game shifts to a mostly bog-standard turn-based combat system - front and back lines, different damage types (physical and magical), the usual. There's more systems bolted on, but most of them tend to be set-and-forget sorts of things. Covens are the exception, shaping how you put your party together, deciding what powers are available to them, and keeping running a party with tens of members from becoming a slog. The combat system gets the job done, however imperfectly, and the enemy designs are interesting-to-disturbing, so a mild thumbs-up here. Finally, there's the story. If you're looking for a story that starts making any real sort of sense early on, this isn't the game for you. That's because the story progresses mainly by dropping cryptic hints of something being Not Right, then imposes a crisis to muddy the waters when they start running out of ways to string you along further. Oh, and you'd better like visual-novel-style cut-scenes as long as a half-hour while you're at it. 100+ hours in, I *might* be starting to get a grip on what's going on, but I wouldn't swear to it. Right now, I'd call this the weakest part of the package, but I'm invested enough to see it through and find out whether the juice is worth the squeeze. So, yeah, I'm still enjoying the game, and I'd recommend it to anybody that doesn't have an issue with any of the three pieces I broke out above. Will I eventually check out another "Labyrinth of" game? Let's see where the story ends up before I commit to that.
