What is Just the Boss Fights?
Just the Boss Fights is a classic 2D platformer RPG with a twist: the game skips all the story, dialogue, exploration, and grind, leaving only the bosses themselves! Unfortunately, our hero wasn't quite prepared for this shift into a boss rush, and finds himself confused at every turn.
Join the Hero as he pieces together what's happened to his world. Why are there gaps in his memory? How does everyone seem to know him? And, most importantly, who keeps changing his gear while he's not looking?
Features:
Experience 4 unique and engaging boss fights!
Adapt to an ever-changing moveset to overcome each battle!
Find clues to what happened in this world and what's causing the glitches!
After you win, up the difficulty with Challenge Mode!
Classic pixel art style!
Supports both Keyboard/Mouse and Controller!
Free to play with no in-game purchases, what's stopping you from taking on the challenge?

i really enjoyed the dragon boss fight, took a bit to get used to the platforming on there but was still fun to see myself fly through it on the last try.
changed my life
clunky rancid game, do not waste your storage space for this. save your 2 gbs on videos instead. Free is not enough to incentivize play. do not support indie developers cuz what is this. there is a reason why triple a is industry standard. the sounds effects were the only saving grace to the 0.4 hrs i put in. shoutout the sfx designer. like wow holy dang. highly recommend the game

I can see this as an earnest try of a boss-rush retro style game, and clearly a lot of work has been put into it (specially the visuals which I love), sadly for me it just doesn't stick the landing well enough. The changing moveset for the player character would be fine if there was an actual mechanical reason for it, and said moves were more thought out, as it stands some abilities feel way more comfortable to use than others, which kinda makes the player feel 2 things: either longing for a previous move you no longer have or the spamming the one new move you find useful. Theres a reason why games like cuphead start with a very limited pool of moves that then gradually expands, because from the start having 5-6 possible actions is....a lot, and this games feels like that for the entire runtime due to the constant change. Also, and I can't stress this enough, the dialogues, while they may seem funny and quirky at first, get old REALLLY fast, really, reading 20 variations of "I dont know whats happening" coming from the protagonist on the same piece of interection is a slog. I really want to like this game but there are a lot of minor (and not so minor) things keeping it down, still, all luck to the devs. PD: Adding music to the glitch sections and smoother transitions between screens could also prove to be some very benefitial quality of life choices
This game have manage to anger and frustrate in more ways then possible. 10/10 highly recommend
pretty good game found it fun some of the harder fights were a large challenge but all and all solid game
This game was really fun, and if you are super into classic style 2D platformers this game is definitely for you. I personally am not the most avid fan of 2D platformers (I more so just love playing boss-fights regardless of the genre of game for the challenge), so I had a couple of issues with the latter 2 boss fights in the game. The movement mechanics may get a little clunky if you're playing on mouse and keyboard, and because of that, the final phase of the dragon boss fight, and the latter 2 phases of the black mage lookin guy's fight suffer because of it!! There's also a lot of dialogue in the game too, which I didn't think there was going to be as much of as there was. All in all, I think the devs did a great job with bringing this game and its idea to life, but I would love to see less dialogue breaking up the flow of the fights, and a bit of ironing out the clunky feeling of the dash jumping mechanics. Thank you guys for developing and uploading this game, and I appreciate you all for letting us play!
im gonna be honest.. it was the funniest 25 minutes i spent in a while. I liked the mini-trials to show you what your kit is inbetween bosses, cool way to not just throw the player at the fight and let them figure out
I was invited by a friend in the developer groups to try out this game demo, and I was genuinely impressed! First of all, the art and music are excellent. The game has a unique visual style, and the way 3D backgrounds and 2D pixel elements are blended together is so smooth—it’s hard to believe this is a thesis project. Personally, I’m a big fan of this style. Some of the dialogue cues could be made more noticeable, maybe with highlights or distinct markers—since a few important hints were easy to miss. Also, adding more visual, in-game guidance for controls would really help with on-boarding new players. I really enjoyed how each boss had its own distinct mechanics, and how the characters had different abilities to counter them—that design choice was great. However, because the game is relatively short and lacks some tutorial clarity, new players may find themselves struggling quite a bit in the early stages, which could be discouraging. That said, I absolutely loved the third boss stage! It was fast-paced and had a very refreshing design. Overall, this is a super promising project, and I’m looking forward to seeing what amazing things create next!
