IMMORTALITY

An interesting concept for a game that is undone by an absolutely appalling UI. The secret scenes are nearly impossible to trigger with either the mouse and keyboard or the controller controls, so the whole game is just an exercise in frustration rather than anything actually entertaining.

I should preface this by saying that I don't recommend this as a game in the game sense, but rather as an art piece. Her Story times ten when it comes to intentionality. The story is scattered and hidden and it's up to you to find it and make sense of it. If you're looking for a mystery that you solve more directly then I suggest you look for The Case of the Golden Idol. If you're looking for FMV visual novels, I can vaguely gesture towards Road to Empress and the sorts. I still recommend this greatly, though. Especially if you're a creative sorts. Immortality offers a unique view towards the process of art and creation through the lens of cinematography and the interactive medium of games. The question of "What happened to Marissa Marcel?" is one that you have to find your answer to by exploring through the many clips of the three movies, with a great part of that answer being the journey you take to get there. I played through Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality and can say that this is easily the strongest entry of Sam Barlow's three games in great part for the boldness of its approach, which I'd say its almost confrontational to traditional narrative structures whilst still adhering to them. It's one of those games that, if you stick through it to the end, you'll come out enriched by the experience.
