This was a particularly difficult game to finish. Not because of difficulty or bugs, but because I was constantly watching one of my favorite games of all time get the life sucked out of it. All the little bits of visual charm were paved over in favor of "realism." The subtle details in both story and gameplay aren't left for you to discover. Instead the game drags them out into the open and points at them, never allowing you to digest them on your own terms. To top it all of, you get to experience the absolute worst dialogue and voice acting I've heard in a Halo game. Cortana in particular has terribly stilted and unnatural line deliveries, which is baffling considering it's still Jen Taylor playing her. I can't leave out Keyes either; listening to him drown out all the mystery and horror of the penultimate level was particularly disheartening. I also can't leave out the utterly bland and lifeless cutscenes, which are pre-rendered now so you can't even see the skins that were so heavily advertised. Oh how far we've fallen from Halo 2 Anniversary's perfect cutscenes. It's such a shame because not only do they have a great template in Halo CE, but because you can see hints of greatness buried under the mess. The returning weapons are often in their best forms and the level design in the back half of the game was generally improved over the original, but these qualities weren't enough to make me forgive the flaws. I don't know if I can bring myself to even try the prequel missions; it's hard to imagine they're well made considering the utter sterilization they performed on such a timeless masterpiece. EDIT: The prequel missions were a slog to get through. Questionable moments with dull and repetitive gameplay, topped off with the mother of all anti climaxes
Where do I begin with this Frankenstein's monster of a remaster? In short, Halo: Campaign Evolved is not good. It is a (somehow) rushed remastering of a generational classic of an FPS title, weighed down by 1) its designers' inability to make real, meaningful changes to its original formula and 2) its insistence that modern gamers are drooling Neanderthals that need every mechanical nuance spelled out to them by one of its two primary protagonists. Additionally though, Halo: Campaign Evolved clearly just straight up needed more time in the oven. Weapon reload animations aren't finished. There's a distracting "shimmering" effect around weapons, and shadows don't operate properly when cast on them either. Cutscene pacing is awkward, with long silent stretches, bad framing, stilted, rushed voicework. Said (pre-rendered) cutscenes have noticeable stutters and a hard 30 FPS cap. Textures are missing in places, and the list just goes on and on and on. Rumors suggest this was released early to avoid butting heads with Grand Theft Auto 6, and this would be understandable if this game could be functional within the same time frame, but this game needs, at minimum another YEAR of player input and finesse. Absolutely nothing feels good here outside of the physics straight up ganked from Reach, and that's incredibly disappointing. In summary, do not give Halo Studios money for aborting what could have been one of the most interesting and redemptive projects of their career. This is an embarrassingly shallow interpretation of one of the most important console shooters ever made, and instead of doing due diligence and really putting in the detail necessary to make a project like this feel feature complete and up to its initial release's standards, Halo Studios just kind of apathetically dumped it off as this big ugly mess of mismatched features, artistic inconsistencies, tonal redirects and mechanical incongruencies. Disappointment feels like a very small word to convey the true meaning of this review. Very sad.
Let me get this straight. I must LINK my Microsoft account to my STEAM account to play a SINGLE PLAYER GAME..... On top of that.... "Once linkmed, this aciton cannot be reversed." Yeah....... Are you going to come after me if I refund the game? Go after my steam library or something? ♥♥♥♥ YOU MICROSHIT. Linking my Steam acct to microsoft for LIFE??? Not happening. You can go monetize someone else steam acct for life. SAD what you think you can get away with. Alt - F4 to get out of the game too? Dont want us to leave? This is a whole nother level of ridiculous. REFUNDING
My biggest criticism is that this remake repeats the same mistake as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Instead of faithfully modernizing the original, it borrows AI, animations, and gameplay systems from later Halo titles. That misses the entire point of a remake. Combat Evolved's Elites didn't fight like Reach's, and Halo 2's Brutes had some of the best AI in the series, yet they're based on Reach's weaker implementation. The goal should have been to preserve Combat Evolved's identity while modernizing it, not replace it with systems from other games. There are also countless small gameplay changes that slowly erode the sandbox. Kill barriers now block areas that players were once free to explore, weapons despawn far too quickly, and overall the game feels more restrictive than the original. Individually these are minor changes, but together they chip away at what made Combat Evolved special. The visuals are another disappointment. The Covenant aesthetic has drifted away from the clean, elegant, almost ethereal look that made Combat Evolved so distinctive. The best example is the Truth and Reconciliation. The original ship had a long, sleek silhouette that immediately stood out as something alien and iconic. The remake turns it into a chunky, bulbous redesign that loses everything memorable about its shape. It doesn't feel like a faithful modernization; it feels like someone wanted to redesign an icon simply because they could. That's a recurring problem throughout this remake. Instead of asking, "How do we faithfully bring this into 2026?", Halo Studios keeps asking, "How can we reinterpret this?" Those are two very different goals, and you can see the difference in almost every artistic decision. Then there are the unnecessary changes. Removing Bungie developer Matt Segur's cameo was done in poor taste. And before anyone tries to make this about race, it isn't. I think race-swapping established characters is a bad creative decision in general because it demonstrates the same problem Halo Studios has had for years: they struggle to respect the source material. They always feel the need to "leave their mark" instead of asking whether something needed changing in the first place. It's like walking into the Louvre, taking the Mona Lisa, and scribbling your own signature across it because you think you've improved it. A remake should celebrate the original, not compete with it. The presentation also falls short. Halo 2 Anniversary showed exactly how a Halo remake should look, thanks to Blur Studio. Here, the cinematics are merely competent instead of memorable. Cortana was another missed opportunity. I was genuinely excited to see a faithful modern interpretation of her Combat Evolved design. Instead we got what the community has jokingly called "Jermtana." She doesn't even resemble the iconic purple Cortana from the original game. It feels like another needless redesign for the sake of redesigning. Johnson suffers the same problem. I understand David Scully has retired, but Sgt. Johnson isn't really Sgt. Johnson without him. I'd rather they had reused his original dialogue than replace it with weaker performances. In fact, that's another issue across the board: several of the new voice performances simply don't hit as hard as the originals, and many of the replaced lines were honestly better. I don't understand why they were changed at all. In the end, this remake reinforces what I've felt for years: Bungie captured lightning in a bottle. Halo's identity came from a team that understood exactly what made it special. After more than a decade, Halo Studios still hasn't recaptured that magic. I believe it's time for Microsoft to hand Halo to a new developer that understands preserving Halo's identity is more important than constantly reinventing it. That being said, the game is pretty.
-broken ai, behavior ranging from erratic to passive and braindead, directionless at times. an enemy can be seen in sight shooting at your direction, but be just a couple inches too close to a wall and be shooting straight into that wall point blank instead of you, and won’t even bother to move to get a better shot, not only for just several minutes but an indefinite period of time, if you stand there long enough. -reuses assets from halo infinite and halo reach, a game thats at least 15+ years old by now. its quite telling that establishing a solid and cohesive art direction where every asset and model fits in aesthetically wise with one another is not a serious concern for halo studios. this helps in reducing the immersion, seeing familiar assets from previous halo games in what is effectively supposed to be a faithful true remake of halo combat evolved, where “”“everything has been built from the ground up”””, to quote the developers themselves in an interview. -the remixed soundtrack lacks some of the power and dynamic impact of the original. halo’s music was deliberately used to establish mood, tension, mystery and grandeur, but the new mix sounds flatter and less impactful, undermining moments that were previously carried by the music alone. in addition - weapon/vehicle/environmental sound effects and cues have been mixed and altered as well in the same vein as the remixed OST. muted, flat, less impact and little distinctive character. you should be able to easily recognize specific weapons firing off, grenades thrown to the floor, weapons overheating, certain enemy attacks, vehicle threats, footsteps, etc without any effort. you shouldn’t ever have to second guess what a sound is in the middle of the action. this only serves as a distraction. -poor performance/optimization, stuttering in gameplay/cinematics, frame rate drops, crashes, softlocks, video/audio desync, audio popping, and even GPU crashes at the very worst -unnatural dialogue, stilted and unusual performances that fail to capture/exceed the intended tone of the original. certain tones and inflections were employed in the original to establish a solid atmosphere and sense of urgency to the plot. but thats more difficult to get a feel for when voice lines sound off-putting and strange, as if a less-than-ideal take from a voice actor was chosen for the final release, and the end result comes off feeling like a amateur theatre play. not only that but the cinematography and the camera angles for cutscenes are unusually still and static compared to the original game, with there being plenty of out of focus shots in what results in the environment being unclear and blurry. lots of stiff, slow body language, awkward facial animation, strange prolonged close-ups and slow movement in supposedly tense situations, same for the camera, feeling as if its very carefully framing characters performing certain actions in a delicate manner rather than capturing the intensity of a dramatic scene. what kind of emotions is a prolonged close-up of sgt. johnson’s side portrait while he’s taking cover from covenant fire with his squad supposed to invoke from the player as they’re watching, aside from boredom and confusion? -simplified level design that makes combat evolved more linear than ever before, when such a big and important part of the original game was its massive and expansive levels to explore. areas that were originally designed around exploration, navigation and discovering your own route are increasingly structured around moving the player toward the intended destination in a linear path. -excessive use of waypoints and markers significantly damper the immersion thats associated with exploration, undercutting the tone and atmosphere of certain levels like 343 guilty spark for example, where you’re wandering around a mysterious and foreboding foggy dark jungle, with the flood every now and then very briefly making subtle yet easily missable appearances in the distance, keeping you weary at all times, but now you have a unnecessary, tacked on, bright waypoint at the very focal point of almost everything you see and experience. -oh by the way, stuff like the flood lingering in the distance is broken too due to the poor AI not triggering at the right times/distance from the player. (encounter scripting failures) -increase in graphical fidelity while going further from the artistic direction of the original. if you didnt like the halo: anniversary remaster and its numerous creative liberties, chances are you won’t like this either. -integration of new gameplay mechanics while not rebalancing the game around the existence of said mechanics. (ex. sprinting) this trivializes many combat encounters, if the crippled AI didn't already do that to an extent. -ai for the flood is also broken. something that was once genuinely scary and nerve wracking to encounter for the very first time in the original game is now yawn inducing and boring in comparison. directionless, slow, indecisive on where to go and what to do, and often found standing around doing nothing, probably watching paint dry. -unbalanced arsenal. the assault rifle now has increased damage and range, and ammo for it is now plentiful, significantly putting the incentive to experiment with halo’s weapon sandbox and adapt to different tactics on the fly at a detriment. why waste your time and bother with other weapons when the definitive answer to all of your potential problems is already within the palm of your hands at the start of the game? -linking to a microsoft account is still mandatory to play. this is self-explanatory, no one likes nor cares for this. if you’re genuinely, sincerely that concerned about having a leg up over the original halo on the xbox, consider removing the mandatory microsoft account login if you want to win some sliver of approval from the players. -apparently lacks PvP multiplayer (but does have 4 player online/split-screen coop.) the competitive PvP multiplayer from the original halo is undoubtedly an iconic and essential element of the game, regardless of who you are and your relationship to the series. to have such a vital and integral part of the game completely missing in a $50 triple-A release…? this aint it, chief. when a developer studio’s sole objective in a remake is to basically copy someone else’s homework thats already been figured out and completed, yet they manage to mess up and ruin just about every aspect of their work somehow, despite the fact that no originality or thought is really needed on their behalf as long as they copy and paste everything faithfully as 1:1 as possible with no deviation, you know something is horribly wrong. ill use some of campaign evolved’s new additions to make an example - sprint lets you bypass situations. the stronger, more abundant AR allows you to ignore weapon/tactical experimentation. additional weapons further muddy the original sandbox. broken AI reduces enemy pressure and tension. simplified and increasingly linear level design reduce environmental problem-solving. the information-dense, navigation centric HUD trivializes exploration and severely undercuts atmosphere and mood, especially in key areas of the game. the remake treats Combat Evolved as a foundation to be modernized, something to be fixed rather than as a deliberately constructed system whose individual limitations and rules were part of a carefully balanced design. the fact that unpaid modders from the halo community have more skill and knowledge in game design compared to halo studios is utterly baffling, considering they’re a several million dollar development studio. its even more astounding that they haven’t learned anything valuable ever since developing halo 4 as 343 industries 14 years ago. where exactly did all of this money go, if not towards creating a quality product? You had one job. one job. All of this could have been easily avoided. its so halover.

A masterpiece remade by people who absolutely have no idea what makes Halo fun, have no understanding of the lore, and seem to actively hate Master Chief. The only fun part of this game is what was left untouched from the original.
Bought it, installed and ran it then it asked for an xbox account sign in to play it, i asked for a refund instead.......
This doesn't have a halo feel to it, also you on the bridge of the ship you can't shoot the women npc's only the men npc's which is pure wokeness. Not surprised since all the devs at 343 are all blue haired women.
I love that a game that is heavily known for its coop has tons of disconnection issues with zero ability to rejoin or be invited mid game. What a very very very well thought out design. Avoid buying. Go play Halo MC Edition. It is literally better in almost every way.
