About

Grim Trials is a heavy metal action roguelite where you craft and customize your own weapons and equipment to embrace Death your own way.
Play as Avelin, a young woman who has met an untimely end, and found herself recruited as one of Death’s many Reapers. Tasked to hunt down impure souls, face her demons, and fight her way through an underworld of her own making, Avelin must endure these trials to become a full-fledged Reaper and see her still-living love once again.

Endless hex-grid arenas filled with monsters, traps, sinful souls, and 7 sacrilegious bosses await. Slay them all with a variety of customizable scythes, crossbows, and powerful Blessings from the Gods of Death around the world. Master the scythe and crossbow to maximize damage to your foes with a unique combat system that rewards clever use of your dual-wielded weapons.

The spoils of battle are the tools of your trade. Gather materials from the battlefield and work with your mentors in the arcane arts to craft new and ever more powerful weapons, armor, and consumables.

Every reaper carves their own path! Mix and match your crafted equipment with skills gained from investing in an expansive skill tree at the start of every run, then choose carefully from the randomized Blessings you obtain mid-run to create powerful builds!

Explore The Academy, built for the training and arming of Death’s various Reapers. Seek enlightenment from mentors, take on quests to build your relationships, and unlock sage advice, knowledge, and powerful support from your peers. Learn the stories of the dead by interacting with the Academy’s denizens.

Coming of age in the afterlife was certainly not the plan, but dying means little to the already-dead, and love unyielding wields power no god can rival. Every time Avelin falls in battle, the experience and materials you’ve earned stay with her. Live, fight, die, then live again, over and over until the promise is kept.

First, I was quite familiar with the local Indonesian developer "Glory Jam," having played and thoroughly enjoyed even unlocking 100% of the achievements for their previous title "Hello Goodboy" which featured a beautiful art style and a simple yet unique story. Additionally, one of their game testers, @fabahrulous (@playerdua), recommended Glory Jam's upcoming project, "Grim Trials" which draws inspiration from action roguelikes like the Hades series. Combat is fast-paced, featuring a mix of melee (hack) and ranged (blast) attacks, all set to a heavy metal soundtrack that intensifies the in-game atmosphere. Weapon and Gear Customization, The game's roguelite elements center on flexible build experimentation, allowing players to freely modify weapons and Avelin’s combat mechanics to suit their individual playstyles. Academy Exploration & Social Hub, Beyond the dungeon-crawling action, the game features narrative interactions within the Academy; players can build relationships with fellow Reapers and mentors to unlock backstory sequences.
Short and sweet roguelite with a gearing/crafting twist. Your quest is to defeat 7 sinful souls spread across 4 worlds/biomes. I completed the game to 100% (minus the skill tree) in 9 hours and 40 minutes of in-game time. Don't worry about crafting, the game respects your time. There's a QTE minigame whenever you craft gear. Nail every prompt and you'll create a mastercrafted item. Miss a few (or all of them) and you'll receive a weaker version instead. Thankfully, you can easily reforge those items instead of crafting them from scratch, and reforging only requires one of each material. Potions are also crafted, and you can carry up to 12 at a time. I never had any issues keeping a healthy supply, as perfect QTEs usually reward you with bonus potions on top of what you crafted. There are bond mechanics and a relatively small hub area. During your trials, you'll be offered 3 blessings after clearing each room, with rooms arranged in a hexagonal layout. While the combat loop starts off as a fairly standard roguelite, it gets better as you progress. Gearing becomes increasingly important as you create strong synergies between your equipment, skill tree, and chosen blessings. I must say I didn't particularly enjoy any of the available melee weapons besides the starting Reaper Scythe. They often slowed the pace of combat, and despite experimenting with different builds, I never found them particularly rewarding. Environments become much busier later on, and you'll often be swarmed by enemies that spam ranged attacks, periodically become invulnerable, or simply dash to the other side of the map. To deal with this, I usually prioritized stun effects, melee damage bonuses, and HP restoration on kill. Those blessings eased the pressure and made close-quarters combat much more manageable. There's definitely some thought put into the melee gameplay; however... Nothing compares to ranged weapons. Every ranged weapon feels incredibly powerful, each with its own set of perks, and they can completely trivialize the game. Even though I often felt like I was cheating, the ranged combat loop is extremely satisfying. Combine blessings that let projectiles ignore environmental obstacles or split into three projectiles with a homing crossbow, and bosses simply melt. There wasn't a single boss I couldn't demolish with a ranged build. Perhaps the developer never intended the game to be particularly punishing and wanted to keep things on a smaller scale, but ranged combat completely overshadowed melee for me. This wasn't much of an issue in the first two biomes, but the swamp area convinced me to fully commit to ranged combat, as props within the environment constantly blocked my attacks while enemies kept peppering me with off-screen projectiles. Most bosses weren't particularly memorable, but I really enjoyed the final encounter. Since you enter it without any room blessings, it strips away much of your excessive temporary power and lets your chosen loadout and permanent progression do the talking. Meta progression is forgiving and fast-paced, although I still had around 15 times more skill nodes left to unlock after defeating the final boss. In that regard, fully completing the skill tree will probably add another 4–5 hours to the completion time. Overall, I don't know whether this will end up being a hidden gem once it launches, but I certainly hope it does well. It definitely deserves a chance. And don't forget to pet Breone & Nameles. This game is really, really enjoyable! I played the demo and absolutely loved the music, especially the metal soundtrack combined with the Reaper theme in this action roguelike. One of the hidden gems of this game is the crafting system. You can craft weapons and equipment that support different playstyles, giving you a lot of freedom in how you want to play. I highly recommend checking this game out ASAP. It deserves way more visibility!

别买 现在简直就是一坨
I've been playing this game for a bit of time, I cleared the second boss. Here's my quick review on this game: The good: -Music is a banger. -New QTE crafting system, which is fresh, but can be improved. The "can be improved": -The biggest flaw this game has is the "dopamine hit". After playing for ~10-ish cycle, I've basically seen every iteration of the skill that we can get from the game, there's nothing to chase, no OP skill, no legendary tier, no game-changing buff. Every run, I just try to get to the boss ASAP. -Skill and weapon design. I've tried 3 weapons from the start of the game, but all of them basically plays the same, just different timing and hitbox. The damage from the ranged weapon is basically non-existent. -The QTE crafting system is too harsh. You basically have to hit all perfect "notes" to get a higher quality equipment, this is too punishing because we lose the materials when we fail. Granted, my play time is short. But I think these are all fundamental ARPG issues that should be addressed immediately. I hope the developer can do a major update/rework to the current mechanics, I look forward to it. This game does have some potential.
Its got good bones. But the powers and upgrades are boring/terrible. When the upgrades are the least interesting thing on a rougelite then its been done wrong. Ill check back in a few months to see if they did something with their odd upgrade choices. There are a few decent action rogues with exiting powers to take a look at. This ain't it
Looks like a cheap knock off of Hades when you first start playing. Trust me, it's not.
Grim Trials is an Action Roguelike about a girl named Avelin where she wakes up in a place after dying and she has to go through what is called "Grim Trials" challenges and defeat the sinful souls in order to find out more about the truth of this place. The game has 5 main zones including the final zone where each has 2 bosses for you to challenge led by many screens of enemies will try to kill you. The game starts off a bit tough because you won't have any skills or gear to equip, but as you play through the game it gets much better. You will meet many NPCs in the hideout whom will provide you with equipment and items that will help you during your runs. Big skill tree and equipment slots to improve your stats even further. Your character has a melee and an off-hand crossbow which you can use both during your run. Fast paced combat and tight controls and enemies that will keep you on your toes the whole time, non stop enemy attacks in small rooms will require you to dash and dodge the whole time, especially those long ranged once and it's really proves fun and challenging. Banger OST and metal music that will keep that adrenaline pumping during each run, especially in a boss fight where the music go hard. It was so amazing and one of the many highlights. The boss fights each proved a real challenge and fun at the same time. You will need to keep up those dashing and dodging the whole fight while also finding that correct timing to land an attack on them. Loved the designs for each one. It's a must play and super recommended action roguelike especially those also who love Hades like games or action roguelikes in general. Overall Rating 10/10
