10 из 10, ждём G2Rыmake.
Having completed this game and it's original all these years ago I cannot recommend it in good conscience. To be fair to the game, it turned out a lot better than the playable teaser that came out almost 7 years ago suggested it would, it seems that the developers really took a lot of the criticisms provided to heart and heavily improved the end product. However the game as a whole just feels bad to play, and I'll list all the reasons I remember below. -Visuals- The game looks pretty well for the most part, with nice views scattered around the world. Since the game takes place in a valley you can see a lot of the world at once and it feels nice to look at. The places where the barrier touches the playable area look pretty impressive to be honest. Despite that there are a lot of things to dislike. A lot of movement in this game causes weird ghosting effects. Moving the camera in a fast manner, swinging a sword, dodging and the like. At first I thought it was the monitor's fault, but it doesn't happen in any other game. Personally I dislike the washed-out grey foggy aesthetic that the game has, but that could be just me. For some reason however the wind in this game is actually crazy. Like a lot of modern games the trees and other foliage move with the wind and it can be distracting for a lot of players. I personally don't have this problem. However the wind itself is visible, like the movement lines and all, and it's absolutely everywhere. Going over cliffs, between trees, into and out of buildings and huts. Completely overwhelming the visuals, for no apparent reason. You cannot turn it off or dial it down in the game at all. Your only option is editing the engine config for Unreal Engine itself, which isn't hard to do but also very bad user experience for something this noticeable. Similarly you can see the water currents as well, which also don't look very good but they at least serve some gameplay function in guiding you through the numerous new underwater parts of the map. To me they just highlight the problem with the wind as it really doesn't serve any gameplay purpose and just distracts from the otherwise good looking world. -Performance- I've attached the PC specs (just under 4 years old as of today) so others can evaluate based on that, but the game mostly ran at just over 20FPS at the medium preset. In some areas it would go up to the low 40s but it was overall consistently below 30. In front of waterfalls, and in places with a lot of visually impressive set pieces and lights (like some boss arenas the end-game sequence) it would go into 10FPS territory which honestly feels insulting for a PC game using these specs. I've also tried it out a few times on the Bazzite Linux distro on the same PC and it ran about the same. -Bugs- There are a lot of bugs in the game. It's obviously something that can improve over time as more fixes roll out, but they significantly detract from the experience in the game's current state. After playing for some time (less than an hour), most of the audio disappears, the only thing left is the music and dialogue. This happens consistently and is not a one-off issue. So you don't hear any ambience, animal noises, combat sounds, nothing. Feels really jarring and is overall a bad experience, mostly forcing a restart if you want to be at all immersed in the game and aware of your surroundings. Visual glitches were not uncommon for me, with parts of the barrier sometimes becoming invisible when approached, distant horizons flickering for no apparent reason. When loading a save you are always loaded in a day-like environment, even if you saved at night. This light then kinda stays at the loading spot, slowly disappearing over roughly 10 seconds. Feels clunky, and it honestly could be a badly implemented feature, but to me it looks like a bug. Also sometimes when loading a save a half loaded NPC appears for a few seconds, T-poses and then disappears again. Would be creepy if it wasn't an obvious bug. -Music and Voicework- The soundtrack is great in this game. It's both faithful to the original and stands out on it's own. It's orchestral, it's just very good, there isn't much more I can say about it. Maybe goes a little too strong near the end of the game, but that's just preference I think. The voicework however is a little mixed. I can't say much about the English version of the game since I played mine in Polish. Of the little I heard of it, the English version is a vast improvement over the original, which was notorious for it's hammy and overall just bad voice acting. This one seems fine. The Polish voiceover is generally very good, there are a lot of voice actors from the original game that were brought back for this remake and obviously there's a lot of new talent as well. All of them did an amazing job, voicework rivalling and sometimes surpassing the original, with one huge, astronomical exception and that is the main character - the Nameless Hero. The main protagonist's voice is so incredibly bad, it just really brings down the whole experience by a lot. -Gameplay- So this was always going to be a mixed bag, since the original was also known for it's messy gameplay. My main takeaways for this game are: slow and cumbersome. And by that I don't mean the loading times and the combat, at least not entirely. The game loads fairly quickly on an SSD and the swordplay does pickup the slack after the initial time and skill investment (both the player and the character). You can feel the delay on everything you do in this game. The mouse input is delay is noticeable and makes the whole rest of the game feel worse than it needs to be. Opening menus has a delay, saving and loading the game has a delay, keyboard inputs - and thus character movements - have a delay. For some actions it's not a lot, but still can be felt. For loading, it's a whole second or two of wondering in you missed the quickload key before you're met with a loading screen. Just feels slow and unresponsive. The inventory looks decent at first, has categories for different types of items, but like everything in the game has weird quirks. Other than the general slowness of inputs that persists throughout the menu-ing, the whole list of items within a category isn't organized in any apparent way, without a sorting option available. It's not sorted alphabetically (at least not in Polish), by date of acquisition, damage, value, amount, it's just a big grid of stuff that you have to go through. Things also aren't always in the same place in the inventory, it seems to me that it changes on game load but I'm not sure about when exactly, so you can't even remember where things are that way. If you're a mage and go to the magic item category, you have a big random list of runes and scrolls of different circles, values, elements and power and you basically have to hover over every scroll and rune to find what you want since they also all look quite similar. I've had 2 copies of the same rune, neither of which was equipped, one near the beginning of the list, one near it's end. It's all just a big mess. -Combat- There quite a few differences between this game and it's original, but one of the biggest feels like the ability to interact with the world with a weapon drawn. This allows for some nice QOL, like using consumables in battle, with your weapon still in hand and looting without lowering your guard. However this comes with a pretty big drawback. Now your focus in battle (the literal focus, i.e. your target) sometimes becomes an interactable object instead of the enemy you want to target. There is a lock-on button if you want to specifically target an active combatant (it can be finnicky though, with weird prioritization), but if you want to target a fallen enemy to finish them off, you sometimes target doors, benches and campfires instead. This is usually only a significant problem in bigger fights, otherwise it just feels slightly cumbersome.
Absolutely fantastic game! Running perfect at high settings, no crashes, smooth as butter. I was right in the midst of my playthrough until today when they released a hotfix that says it fixes crashes and bugs. Dear reader it has made my game unplayable with stutters and it's crashed 4 times back to back mid game. What the heck
