What a wonderful journey! I'd been following along since the very first devlog years ago, and it was such a joy to see this game grow and change over that time into what it is today. While I'm still working on maxing out all my frogs and gathering the last of my cooking recipes, I have the 5 hours here + 7 hours that Steam didn't log due to needing to launch it in admin mode for a bit. The main story is very touching--it's very obvious what's going on from the start, but that isn't a negative at all. It didn't need to be a huge twist to still be affecting. I liked the way that it unfolded gradually as you got deeper and deeper in. There are various riddles and puzzles throughout. The ones tied to the story were not too bad, and all of them come with hints if needed (more on that in a moment). I especially liked the treasure maps. I do like you still have a use for trash from fishing for a while, but find the random element a bit frustrating for upgrades. The good news is you don't really need the upgrades; they serve to make the fishing a little easier. This is probably one of my fishing minigames, and I found it engaging without being total trivial. The frogs are all delightful, though you'll quickly exhaust their dialogue as they rank up. That's alright; I think expecting every single frog to have unique dialogue the entire time is very unreasonable, especially for a solo project. The designs were all delightful, and I loved seeing their original inspirations in the credits roll. My largest complaint--and it's a big one--is that the desire to keep everything grounded so thoroughly in the world means it's VERY easy to miss things you'll need to progress the game. The discord community is very friendly about this, but I think the fact so many people are missing key upgrades and pickups is a very large ding. Click everything. Click things you don't think you can click. Click everything three times. Four times. Keep clicking. I had NO IDEA where to find clover seeds for the longest time--I'd gotten one by accident somewhere, but had no idea how to get more until I saw someone else asking about another seed you get by clicking something that doesn't look clickable. My pacing through the story was also entirely out of synch with expectations because I didn't notice you could click the bridges--or that they needed to be clicked twice--until I was reputation 9. I was getting sidequests for areas and things I could not access at all. This grounding in the world ALSO means for one of the late game story puzzles, I never noticed the clues that suddenly appeared everywhere. I ended up brute forcing all of those puzzles, and only later noticed the clue pages that had shown up, each tucked away in a corner of the screen and looking like part of the scenery. I think players going in with that expectation and knowledge will have a better time--it's the only thing that really soured my experience. The other gripe, minor, was a sidequest that expects you to just blind pixel hunt for several items. It's optional, obviously, but I think it's poor puzzle design in an otherwise very solid experience. Anyway! Go play this game! It's wonderful and sweet and filled with so much care. Just click everything twice!!
This is a genuinely incredible game, and I can't believe I've been here to watch it develop every step of the way. I'm so proud to see the release finally happen. As for the actual review, this is truly the most calming game I have ever played. It was my go-to relaxation method last year, when I was grinding 10+ hours of studying per day. Notes: - this is a generally potato-friendly game. It can run on my laptop and my 2013 old ass laptop with relative ease - Frog Island's artstyle is probably my favourite part about it. It's so cute!!!! I love all the little baby characters (and the cat). - Gameplay doesn't feel repetitive or boring at all, which is an issue I had with Stardew Valley. - The Story is surprisingly well-done, which is unorthodox for games like these. I cannot claim to have completed everything, but I am definitely satisfied.
I love this game <3 Thank you for this great piece of art :) (I still have a skill issue in bug-catching, but it is still super fun to play. An I miss the option to save the game at any time.)
Cute and cozy!! Lots of secrets to find. I had a little difficulty with controls, some took a few different approaches to figure out but overall it's super relaxing and fun and I haven't even found everything yet!!
kinda mid idk
The art style is a choice that will appeal to some and not appeal to others. For me, the art style was a negative with the colours kind of being too close together and not popping enough. It's like if you viewed the world in greys without even some black and white to break things up. But I thought I'd pick it up because it sounded like my kind of game as someone who loves games like Stardew Valley and the My Time At series. I'm also a bit of a loot goblin, so I read fishing, cooking, collecting, and thought it was right up my alley. It became clear pretty quickly it wasn't the game I was expecting and would bore me. I've played a similar game on mobile before. This is like an upgraded version of that game. You collect bugs and put them in a jar. What bugs you put in there will attract different frogs. You also buy decorations the frogs will come relax in, I think those also affect what frogs you get. You can grow some crops and fish in order to cook meals to feed the frogs. Interacting with the frogs increases how much they like you. You also purchase things to open up more land. Use collected items to access different parts of the island. That's about all I experienced of the game and I feel no need to keep playing. I think I'd recommend this to people who play a lot of cozy mobile games. It just wasn't for me. For me, I think I needed to feel a challenge. Which not all cozy games aim for. And I needed a living story. If I could give advice, it would be to focus on raising questions instead of just letting things happen. When I met the few frogs I did, I felt no interest in them. Their expressed personality didn't make me interested in their story. I needed to feel curious about them. The island too, I just unlocked the lotus area and I'm supposed to feel curious about it. But I didn't. Because there was no tension, no gravity. Everything is fine in that area. The only unlock to learn more about it was reputation. I felt no motivation to act. "I want to see new frogs" was insufficient for me personally. Diversity in aesthetics could have helped here. For example, if the lotus area was based off a different culture, like with different coloured trees and frogs in different fashion, it would have been more interesting just from that. Maybe the different fashion could unlock some clothes you can apply to the new frogs. Maybe the new culture is particularly compatible with some of the frogs that appear in other places and you could move them there as part of their story so they find a fitting frog-home. That's not the feeling I got, and maybe that's something you'd find later in the game. But I didn't see it in what I played. Some of the best cozy games have depth to their worlds, and the ones that just have a collection of short, narrative stories are for a different player.
I have been looking forward to this game for so very long because i am a BIG frog lover and i am a big fan of the art style. So after finally getting my hands on this game and playing the demo for a few hours i can confidently say that i really love this game. The frogs are adorable and the story is really cute as well. I also love the shops and everything this game has to offer. HOWEVER!!! I am so not a fan of the fishing system. For a game that is supposed to be a calm and stuff, I really don't like the fishing system at all. Its a little bit hectic for me. I am not sure if i am the only one that has same thoughts about the fishing system, but i think it would be nice if there was a toggle or something to make the fishing just a little bit more simpler. Other then that i love everything else about the game so far. If you really like frogs and like playing a simple little farming game, then this game is for you. Just keep in mind the fishing mechanics are a little rough.
