It hasn't been updated in three years. I don't believe it's going to be finished. It's not a bad game as it's standing now, but it's not something you can beat. The guy making it never finished the ending. So it's mostly turned into something that you just try to last as long as you can in. It's got unique mechanics and had promise.
Great game, lots of fun. The Catan/Agricola style, with a bit of turn based combat and story driving 'politics' all make it greatly entertaining. The different classes give it a bit of extra playtime, too. It is early access, I did pick it up at a great discount. It is an unfinished game, with some stolen items not showing in any inventory, bugs in combat (they couldn't attack my unarmed guy). It can be a bit tedious to click around as much as you do, and a bit of extra visual hints as to what has been done in a turn would be great, just so you don't have to keep as much in your head as you do. As far as I'm concerned, I got my money out of it. If the guy stopped now it would be an unfinished game, but still a game worth playing. It seems well thought out, creative and not derivative, and the graphics are tolerable, even if the UI could use some polishing. Most importantly, mute that sound. On windows, go to the volume and mute it forever. Its horrible. There are a million hours of free, open source music, Classical performances, roman flutes, lutes and whistles. For craps sake, anything but the sounds it has now. It can only be compared to the theme of that star trek with the Quantum Leap fellow. You can only assume the dev owes money to a guy with a broken key-tar and had to let him do the sound.

What's there to say about Freeholder... I wouldn't recommend getting this game right now. Bugs don't come up TOO often, but when they do it usually takes you out of the game. As of writing this review, combat's busted. Every time I try I either get completely smoked or I win and lose all the gear I've crafted. Trying to smuggle things to the black market creates weird overlay issues and there's always an alpha wolf to hunt. But where it works? It works well. People keep saying they see promise in this game and it shows. There's systems set up that are still fun to mess with, learning how to best approach the game is half the fun and while not knowing how to actually do anything, there's a lack of decent tutorial right now but I'm certain they plan to add one, is a major drawback but once you figure it out and get it down there's a ton of fun to be had. I say again. Don't buy it now, but if you like games with a bit of management to them, keep an eye on this one and scoop it up once it's gotten a few more updates. I, at least, am fairly certain it'll only get better from here.
Abandoned
It's a good game, u need good tactics to survive most of the bugs were already fixed so yay just report if u see any bugs the dev will fix it even though the game is not yet complete it is replayable. I love this game so much even with the bugs you can choose different gaming styles, u can be a farmer an artisan a cook and still survive! Actually when I played again and again I realized that it's only hard at the beginning, make full use of the tavern hire helpers as to not overwork, get sick then finally die. Oh and you really don't need to pay too much attention on battle if you don't feel like it, If you get bandits on your lands just spend favor it cost 10 (nightraid) from your chosen faction to get rid of them without battling.. my first gameplay I died because I thought I need to battle to get rid of them so only got few action points left each round. There are also a lot of items that don't take warehouse space like herbs (ginseng, lavender etc.) processed goods ( cloth linen leather) flax also don't take space. I also suggest you pick a gameplay with bards then befriend their city, choose your neighbors well since some of the passive boosts are very helpful depending on your character's class but the bard is for everyone and last tip don't forget to hoard firewood before winter :)
New review: -Game is unfinished and buggy. Updates are nearly nonexistent. Not worth buying. Happy to flip this back to a positive review if the developer ends up, you know, developing. Old review: -I am going to give this game a qualified positive review. If you enjoy supporting up and coming games and are willing to overlook some major rough spots, give this one a try. It really feels like it's headed in an interesting direction, and the choices you make as a player feel weighty and exciting. That said, the interface is beyond janky, with unintuitive (bordering on baffling) controls and frustrating navigation. I say this as a longtime roguelike player / Dwarf Fortresser, having an extremely high tolerance for wacky UI. Nothing is present that seems like it couldn't be ironed out with time and effort, but it's very frustrating to encounter as a player. That said, all in all, I found it to be immersive, interesting, and well worth the cost of entry.
Game is dead in the water. Do not buy, It's been over a year since the last posted update from the dev, and a year prior to that since an update to the game (2 years, no updates). Game has great promise, that's why I backed it in EA. At this point the dev is stealing people's money. Take this off of Steam and host it on a dedicated site. Don't add unnecessary trust issues to the EA program. On the other side of the coin, I wish the dev and his family the best. I really want the dev to finish (or at least work on) the game.
I have a Lets Play here: https://youtu.be/bbAQZuZML0A I did enjoy the game; once I got past the LARGE amount of clunk to it; I was surprised that it hides a VERY immersive, very deep, simulation rogue-like; I love simulations, and I Iove rogue-likes. The issue though, is that it took even me, someone who is familiar and fond of these types of games, a fair bit of time to get through the clunk and reach the meaty, rogue-ie goodness; many other peoplewill not take that time, so I suggest the following: 1) Setting should be accessible from the start menu; the intro music is WAY too loud; also, more granularity to the sound, music and ambient volume lvls would be nice, say, as opposed to low/mid/high. It would also be nice if the game remembered the setting I had selected each time I try again. 2) The help sections (the "?")should be presented as little popup windows over each icon they are talking about, not as a giant, multipage text dump. 3) The menu can't be existed by the "ECS' key, many of them you have to hunt around for the gray confirm or cancel window; very annoying. 4) The resource list to the right of the screen get VERY cluttered very quickly; why not split it up into categories? There is "Nutrition", but it then adds all the food to the list on the left; why not hide them under a submenu or tooltip under the "Nutrition" Same for the crafting resources; ditto for herbs. This should result in a LOT less clutter. Gameplay wise: The ability to select or rename your 2 starting allies would be cool.
I cant wait for this game to get to a better place :) Quite interesting concept.
Too many bugs, Tried to get a refund but I played a couple more hours than the refund limit.. oh well. Maybe he will fix the game some day..
