A great game and a fantastic love letter to the earlier NES/SNES Final Fantasy games. It may be a small thing to some, but I really liked the impact the story had on the gameplay, especially in the character of Dagger who has summons long before she actually has the MP to use them (as well as other things which I don't wish to spoil.) The combat feels slow and unresponsive as a command you input may take a minute or so to execute as it goes through the turns in order. That's fine during longer, impressive animations like for strong abilities or summons, but I was noticing it even just using basic attacks. I eventually got used to this but it made a bad first impression. I like learning abilities by equipping items. I don't know if the mechanic is good or bad, but I like it. And again, the abilities you learn further charcaterize the cast. Zidane is a womanizer, and therefore has the ability "Protect Girls". The strongly designed characters do limit build creation which may be a disappointment for players who enjoyed the freedom of previous games jobs, materia, or GFs. The story is fairytale-esque and the cast is charming. Vivi and Stiener were my favorite characters. I wish the ATE system didn't skip some if you enter the wrong screen while exploring an area. That can be very frustrating, especially as this game's raison d'etre is the story and characters. Buy this is you want a simpler, well-executed Final Fantasy. Just be aware that the combat is weaker here than in other Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy IX has always been a favorite, and some of the mods you can get for quality of life upgrades really improve things by adding back cut content
