FEZ is a beautiful indie game that blends simplicity with clever innovation. Its core mechanic—shifting between 2D and 3D perspectives—creates unique and mind-bending puzzles that encourage creative thinking and exploration. The pixel art style is charming and colorful, giving the game a calm and relaxing atmosphere, perfectly complemented by an excellent soundtrack. While the game doesn’t focus heavily on narrative, it offers a strong sense of discovery that keeps you engaged as you uncover its secrets. Some puzzles can be quite challenging or even a bit obscure, but that’s part of the game’s charm and what makes it stand out. Overall: A unique and memorable experience that’s highly recommended for fans of indie and puzzle games.
Si près de la masterclass mais quand même incroyable il faut l'avouer
FEZ is an indie puzzle-platformer developed by Polytron Corporation and released on Steam in 2013, that stands out for its innovative mechanics, charming pixel art, and deeply rewarding exploration. At first glance, FEZ presents itself as a deceptively simple 2D platformer starring Gomez, a lovable character living in a peaceful two-dimensional world. However, the game’s defining twist—a unique mechanic that allows players to rotate the 2D environment along a third axis—unfolds into a mind-bending adventure that redefines spatial puzzles and challenges players to think beyond traditional platforming constraints. The core gameplay revolves around exploring vibrant, hand-crafted pixel environments that shift dramatically as you rotate the world 90 degrees at a time. This rotation reveals new paths, hidden platforms, and secret passages previously impossible to see or reach. It’s an elegant and clever mechanic that seamlessly blends 2D platforming with 3D spatial puzzles, forcing players to reconsider their perspective constantly. Unlike many puzzle games that can feel linear or predictable, FEZ encourages experimentation and curiosity, rewarding players who take the time to understand the intricate geometry of its world. This rotational mechanic is not only visually impressive but also enriches every challenge, making traversal feel fresh and engaging throughout the experience. Visually, FEZ embraces a retro pixel art aesthetic that is both nostalgic and strikingly modern in its design. The environments are lush and varied—from bright forests and sunny villages to mysterious ruins and cryptic underground chambers—each crafted with attention to detail and an artistic flair that invites exploration. The animation is smooth, and the color palette is vibrant yet balanced, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the complexity of the puzzles. The sound design further complements this ambiance, featuring a minimalist, ambient soundtrack composed by Disasterpeace that enhances the contemplative and sometimes surreal tone of the game. The subtle sound effects and melodic tunes combine to immerse players in FEZ’s whimsical world without distracting from the cerebral challenges. FEZ’s puzzle design is a highlight, known for its steep difficulty curve and cryptic nature. Players must decipher environmental clues, decode symbolic languages, and even solve intricate ciphers hidden throughout the game. The puzzles are thoughtfully integrated into the world rather than feeling like separate challenges, creating a cohesive experience where narrative and gameplay intertwine. The game often demands patience and lateral thinking, pushing players to experiment with rotation, observe patterns, and pay close attention to subtle hints embedded in the environment. This complexity can be daunting for some, but it’s precisely what gives FEZ a deep sense of accomplishment upon solving its mysteries. Narratively, FEZ keeps things minimal and abstract, opting for a subtle storytelling style that relies more on environmental storytelling and player interpretation than direct exposition. Gomez’s journey from a two-dimensional existence to understanding the true nature of his universe serves as a metaphor for discovery and enlightenment. The sparse use of dialogue and text leaves much of the story open to interpretation, inviting players to piece together meaning from the world around them. This approach complements the game’s puzzle-centric design, emphasizing exploration and wonder over traditional narrative beats. One potential downside to FEZ is its pacing, which can sometimes feel uneven due to the intricate and occasionally obtuse puzzles. Some players may find themselves stuck for long stretches, frustrated by the cryptic nature of certain challenges or the lack of direct guidance. The game does not hold the player’s hand, which is a double-edged sword—it preserves the sense of discovery but can also alienate those looking for a more straightforward experience. Additionally, the absence of a robust hint system means that players either need to persevere or seek external help, which can disrupt immersion. Overall, FEZ is a masterclass in innovative game design, combining classic platforming elements with a fresh and mind-expanding mechanic that challenges perceptions of space and perspective. Its beautiful pixel art, atmospheric soundtrack, and cleverly woven puzzles make it a timeless experience for players who enjoy thoughtful, exploration-driven games. While its difficulty and abstract storytelling might not appeal to everyone, those who invest the time to unravel its secrets are rewarded with a uniquely satisfying journey that lingers long after the final puzzle is solved. FEZ stands as a shining example of how indie games can push the boundaries of creativity and redefine what a platformer can be. Rating: 9/10
Fes başıma, fes başıma, püskülü ben olayım.
One of the best 2D plattformers on Steam.
To a certain extent this game is a relaxing adventure with a naturally unfolding map. But at a certain point the puzzles start getting so esoteric and wanky that the experience deteriorates into "lookup a walkthrough or enjoy being miserable"
