I played "Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden" before this one. I didn't enjoy that, so I'm not surprised I didn't enjoy this. It's probably not my business to be leaving negative reviews on a genre I'm finding isn't for me, but each of these games had an aspect I felt I could critique regardless of my subjective experience. In Abyss, it was a game-breaking design flaw that killed my completion run. Here, it's just a comparatively lacking experience. I can tell what people liked about Abyss but didn't like about this game. Abyss had harsh limits to the world it built and the story it told, but it wasn't mostly from lack of ambition. I said the game failed to invoke Lovecraft and Bioshock, but it accomplished a lot more in setting and atmosphere than this game. What exactly is "Fairy Tale" about random houses and sewers? Abyss also had a cast that was uninspired, but it was at least organic to the story. Here, I keep getting visits and notes from "The Brothers Grimm," because they wrote fairy tales, so that's why they're telling me everything I have to do. Also, very Avengers with that "magic bean" shout-out at the end. I'm so hype. /s Abyss made me angry, but this just made me feel numb. Tuning out the story and using hints more liberally to get me to the puzzles just turned the game into a checklist, leading me to conclude that Artifex Mundi games just aren't my style. However, even outside of my preference, I don't think this is worth your money. Though Abyss pissed me off more, it is objectively a better game aside from the design issue I describe in detail in my review, and both are $15. Spend your money wisely, hidden object fans.

Quite a good HOG. Only letdown with this one is the locations are grouped as areas on the map making it difficult at times to determine where to go with the story - especially when HOP's appear randomly and sometimes needing to backtrack. Puzzles were good and varied, and there are plenty of HOP's to find throughout the game.

5/10 - Some of the puzzles are very illogical, and the story is wooden—to a point where it sometimes becomes unintentionally funny. For fans of the genre, it might be something to play in between other games, but you can also skip it.

Heel leuke sfeer.
Fairy Tale Mysteries: The Puppet Thief is a hidden object adventure that embraces the darker side of classic folklore while delivering the accessible gameplay that fans of the genre have come to expect. Developed by The House of Fables in collaboration with Gogii Games and published by Artifex Mundi, the game presents an original mystery inspired by fairy tales rather than simply retelling familiar stories. Players assume the role of a newly recruited investigator working alongside the legendary Brothers Grimm, whose latest assignment leads them to a peaceful village haunted by a series of child disappearances. The premise immediately establishes an intriguing blend of fantasy, detective work, and supernatural suspense that remains engaging throughout the journey. The narrative unfolds as the investigation points toward a sinister puppeteer whose enchanted creations conceal a far more dangerous purpose than entertaining audiences. Every new clue gradually uncovers the truth behind the mysterious abductions, encouraging players to explore abandoned locations, magical environments, and forgotten corners of the village in search of answers. While the storyline follows a familiar hidden object adventure structure, it succeeds by maintaining a consistent sense of mystery and introducing enough magical twists to keep the investigation compelling. The fairy tale inspiration enriches the world without relying heavily on existing folklore, allowing the game to build its own identity while still feeling comfortably familiar. Exploration serves as the heart of the gameplay. Players travel between beautifully illustrated locations, gathering useful items, unlocking new paths, and solving environmental obstacles that naturally advance the story. Hidden object scenes are integrated into the investigation instead of feeling disconnected, making each search meaningful within the overall adventure. The game offers a healthy selection of hidden object challenges alongside numerous standalone puzzles and mini-games that range from pattern recognition and mechanical devices to logical problem-solving. The variety helps maintain a steady pace, ensuring that gameplay alternates smoothly between exploration, observation, and puzzle-solving. Although seasoned players may recognize several traditional mechanics, the overall design remains enjoyable thanks to its balanced difficulty and intuitive progression. The visual presentation is one of the game's strongest qualities. Hand-painted backgrounds create an enchanting world that successfully captures both the wonder of fantasy and the unease of supernatural horror. Forests, village streets, abandoned buildings, and mysterious theatres are filled with intricate details that reward careful observation while supporting the game's magical atmosphere. The colorful art style contrasts effectively with the darker themes, producing environments that resemble illustrated storybooks transformed into unsettling crime scenes. Character animations and technical presentation reflect the game's age, but the artistic direction continues to hold up remarkably well because of its imaginative design and consistent aesthetic. Sound design also contributes significantly to the overall experience. The orchestral soundtrack reinforces the magical setting with melodies that alternate between peaceful exploration and tense investigation. Ambient effects, magical sounds, and subtle environmental audio create an immersive atmosphere that complements every location. Voice performances provide personality to the cast and help communicate the urgency surrounding the missing children, making the story easier to follow while adding emotional weight to important scenes. One of the game's greatest strengths is its accessibility. The controls are straightforward, objectives remain easy to understand, and optional hints prevent progress from becoming frustrating. This welcoming approach makes the game suitable for both newcomers to hidden object adventures and longtime fans looking for a relaxing mystery. Achievement hunters will also find additional incentives to thoroughly examine every location and complete optional objectives, adding replay value beyond the main storyline. The experience is not without shortcomings. Some puzzles borrow familiar concepts seen throughout the hidden object genre, and experienced players may anticipate solutions before reaching them. The adventure also follows a fairly linear structure, limiting experimentation and alternative approaches. Even so, these issues rarely overshadow the strengths of the game because its emphasis remains on storytelling, atmosphere, and satisfying exploration rather than mechanical complexity. Overall, Fairy Tale Mysteries: The Puppet Thief is an enjoyable fantasy detective adventure that successfully combines hidden object gameplay with an engaging supernatural mystery. Its imaginative setting, attractive artwork, varied puzzles, and steadily unfolding narrative make it a worthwhile experience for players who appreciate story-driven casual adventures. While it does not reinvent the genre, it delivers a polished and consistently entertaining journey that captures the charm of fairy tales while introducing enough darkness and suspense to keep the mystery captivating until the final revelation.
