One of the really bad HO games that Atrifex Mundi only published but didn't develop, those can be very hit or miss and this is definitly a miss. Silly story (but that's not an issue by itself), but were it really fails is in the horrendous graphics, especially in the hidden object parts. Instead of the pretty colorful graphics of, let's say Grim Legends you get what looks like if someone sneezed out a library of clip art from 1992 with no rime or reason to a consistent artstyle, scale or design. The puzzles are your standard puzzle game fare with some minor inventory puzzles. I got it dirt cheep in a bundle so can't say I regret buying it, but it's definitly on the bad side of this genre.
Great story
I was not the biggest fan of this Artifex Mundi hidden object game. There is better ones from them to pick and play instead.
I will recommend it only because it works, has decent amounts of hidden object scenes, and some of the other puzzles and minigames were good, but uhhhhhhhhhhhg, this game. The story is TERRIBLE and clumsy, I didn't care about any of the characters, and the antagonist is an idiot with bad motivations.
I personally did not enjoy this game. The story was a slog fest and there were some terrible misspelt words in some HOG scenes. While the story had an interesting concept with a neat setting but it felt very hand holdy at times, especially with the messages from the fellow detectives. While I enjoyed the fast travel map with how easy it was to use and prolly the only good part of this game, a lot of the places seem the same after awhile, ESPECIALLY in the town. Some screens don't have very obvious ways besides the map to tell you what to do next, even on the easiest difficulty, leading to hints being used when not needed. The art and cutscene movies feel outdated a lot of times, while this could be the charm of the game and it is an old release being ported to Steam, it also made the HOG scenes terrible to look at. Along with the spelling errors mentioned above, a lot of the scenes are dark and gloomy with a terrible filter placed ontop, making objects harder to see, especially in the bonus chapter. I spent a good chunk of my hours on this game just staring at scenes trying to find whats missing, especially the pottery pieces, and then being stumped until it just randomly shows up. The objects are a weird mix of decently hidden to squinting hard to figure it where things are, along with objects not immediately being registered when clicked on, very much a problem with the graveyard scene where it seems that no matter what I clicked, I couldnt get an object needed without having to find everything else. This is also the reason of me just abusing the hint button because I was tired and wanted to complete the game out of need to refresh my brain of decent games. The Puzzles suffer an even worse fate than the HOGs by being far too easy, even on the normal / default setting and tend to bug out a lot. The puppet puzzle near the end completely broke, having me to use a skip on a EASY puzzle along that I had almost correct until a limb wouldn't move exactly how I wanted it for the solution. The tedious simon says puzzle at the end almost making me quit and refund the game. The bonus game puzzles were decent and boring that I have no direct notes of how they where. The marble lock puzzle was also tricky in that you could get it completely stuck and unfixable leading to skipping it if you somehow misaligned a marble. This was not a skill issue but a complete accidental bug. This also goes to show how boring the puzzles where when the 2 mentioned are only mentioned due to bugs. Honestly, there are better HOG games out there with similar or better premises to this game that I could recommend to the other AM games here are leagues better than this one. I got this game on sale and I still won't recommend it on sale. It was just a slogfest with a medicore story that I can't remember most of it with iffy visuals and too easy but will somehow get bugged puzzles and HOG scenes that look beautiful until trying to find objects in it along with the spelling errors and using uncommon words for things or nonsense words from being translated from another language. I wanted to like this game but it didn't even hit the lowest bar for me and I have a few dogwater HOG games as my favorites for nostalgia purposes.
Definitely one of the better Artifex Mundi games, if not for the art style, but for the extra bonus level. Interesting story, decent puzzles. A great way to while away the time.
It won't be long before I'll become a puppet
Solid classic HOG dripping with magical atmosphere. Two storylines, each about two hours on expert, and it never overstays its welcome. Puzzles are good, hidden object scenes are nothing special but do the job. Art is old school hand drawn and honestly still looks pretty. Worth picking up if you're into the genre. Special thanks to Artifex Mundi for keeping these timeless gems accessible.
