I remember the feeling of being very proud the day the Lockheed F117 Nighthawk was revealed to the world. There had been rumors of such a fighter jet for years, but seeing it for the first time brought amazement that such a Skunkworks project could be kept secret for years. Microprose had made the original game "F19 Stealth Fighter" based on those rumors. The real plane was not that different, although the Microprose simulation portrayed a much smaller plane with greater capabilities (air-to-air). Microprose came out with F117 not too long after the real-world announcement to get the game in line with the real world. I am very surprised at how well this very old PC simulation plays on my Windows 10 computer. It uses the DOS Box app to play the old DOS game on the modern Windows computer. It is important to hit Control-F12 a few times when first starting the game in order to get DOS Box working properly within a more modern CPU. There is no way to make this game into 1080p. 320x200 is the standard resolution, and it will stay that way. Maybe since Microprose is back to making some games, maybe they will redo this one in addition to the planned B-17 simulator. First, this is a revolutionary simulation from "back in the day" and the graphics are very cartoonish compared to a modern game. That makes it fall within the bounds of a "classic" game. But when it first came out, F117 Stealth Fighter 2.0 was easily the best flying game out there. It still plays well. The HUD functions as it should, and your displays show your enemy targets. There are a large variety of missions to fly in assorted settings (Cold War, Limited War, Conventional War) in numerous countries (Libya, Vietnam, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, China). Using your stealth technology, your main objective is to stay hidden while destroying your targets or taking recon photos. This is a fairly easy goal if your stay below 500 feet. It is important to note the mission parameters of your weapons - such as having to drop your guided bomb from over 1000 feet. Most missions take a half hour or less to fly. Landing can be a challenge, but the ILS does function and all the runways are straight north-south. A rather large manual (over 300 pages) is included. The most important 3 pages is the appendix with the keyboard commands. The rest of the manual is very well done if you have an inkling to read outdated military specs. When the game first boots up, it asks to calibrate your joystick. After that routine is over, you are asked to select your sound. When the game was new, Adlib sound was the standard. But I have discovered that using that sound set will sometimes make your game crash to desktop. It is either best to use no sound or Roland sound. You can turn off the jet engine sound using Alt-V and select Sound 2 or 1. Before I discovered the secret, sometimes the game would crash upon touchdown at your home airfield. I hope you enjoy this game as much as I did. It was my favorite military jet simulation from the DOS age of computers.

i enjoyed playing this back in the 90s - i remember i bought a new soundcard, a thunderboard and installed it in my cumulus computers 386-16. I was using a CH Flightstick back then - this was one of my first PC games.
