I played this game 6 years ago. It was alright. Big learning curve, which is fine. I came back to it. Turns out the developers launched some update a few years back that dynamically changed how the star systems were linked together. In the process of this occurring, some new player agent missions became broken, as the mission was built around system links that no longer exist. I spent an hour researching how to get to the system I was tasked to go to for the agent. I had to spend all of my ISK to acquire an item that let me warp to this special, disconnected part of space that contained the system I needed to go to, and an item that let me warp back to regular, connected space. Upon warping to this area, I navigated to my system, then got killed by a gatecamper and lost all of my stuff. I proceeded to ask the new player chat for help and complained about this being extremely frustrating as a new player in a game that is already extremely hostile towards new players. The community basically told me to live with it or go play something else - so I left. The patronizing, condescending attitudes of these ancient gamers drove me away, which is a tragedy. This game doesn't often get many people who are willing to take the time to learn it. You would think the community would cherish any extra people who come to add to the population. But nope. Nothing but toxicity and gatekeeping to protect their little space. I've played many full-loot PvP games. I'm no stranger to the gut-punching pain of losing all your items in games like Albion Online, Rust, extraction shooters, and other survival games. I don't really care that I died and lost my crappy little ship. But you aren't going to get many new players who will be tasked with working around a broken system and be willing to jump through the hoops necessary to get it done. I was at the final hoop, got shot down, and decided that was my fair college try of this game. Good riddance.

The new non-pvp starter reagon 'Exordium' makes a huge difference. Now new players can get a better feel for the game without the (very unpleasant 'Ganking' factor) stress that is found in the main part of the game. I always thought the 'ganking' was the main deterent to new players sticking around. Had they done this like 10+ years ago the player base might have skyrocketed. I hope there is a massive stream of new players that will now feel like they can take the time to learn the ropes before jumpint into the high-risk/high reward part of the main game. Cheers!
It looks nice on screenshots but good luck doing any of those activities. The game is actually not that bad. But it was created as a sandbox where you give players the power to do what they want, and guess what people do when that happens? They become @ssholes. You die, you lose your ship and everything with it, including your character implants. And people tend to just gank for that reason alone. You want to shoot some enemy NPCs? Except someone to show up between waves, kill you and ruin weeks of farming currency. The game does not have a big population. At most I saw around 30.000 players online. However the developers encourage multiboxing so it's probably not more than 10-15.000 players online, probably much less. It's ran by whales and that fact makes it really hard to get into for someone who just wants to enjoy relaxing playstyle. As a new player I recommend you stay away from it. Skill learning take YEARS, literaly YEARS and you will not catch up players who've been around for long. Unless you're willing to spend real money to boost time it takes to learn those skills. So the game is actually PAY TO WIN. If the game had a server where you don't lose your ship when you die (only cargo) then I would play. But for now I'm just gonna stay the f away from it and let it inevitably die as it's extremely hostile to new players.
The bottom line is no MMO in existence will ever disrespect your time like EVE will. The entire system is build to get you to make a purchase, at which point they no longer give a crap about anything you say. The only people who enjoy the game are the ones killing it, mainly 15 alt having chung weu and his friend Lee wong with 13 tiny ships with webs on every gate in system. Oh you think they're playing to enjoy the game? No, they pay the devs to allow them to own entire branches of nullsec with their bot armies who gate camp, all to farm ISK to sell on websites, sponsored by the devs, who actively fund and profit the same system. Would you like to spend 20 hours doing missions, mining and general activities farming for a cool ship, only to lose it to a bunch of brainless vets who abuse the gate system to set up traps at the gate and insta-gank you with their 20 accounts? Would you like to buy a ship with plex, buy skills, but then immediately lose anything you build if it eclipes a certain value to a mechanic that's entirely un-fightable and made to make the devs more money at the expense of the players? Would you like to then have devs laugh at your loss and then tell you that you just shouldnt play the game then if you dont like the dude who camps at a specific spot, who you cannot see ahead of time and who can completely nullify all ability to fight? If you want your time, money, effort and experience completely disrespected by the devs, and then further by the scumbags who call this game home, then play Eve. It will be fun for the first bit, until you become enough of a valuable target, then you simply are not able to play the game unless you join megacorpXantigatecamp and their 20 bot discords meant to find and avoid the cancers who sit at gates and suicide gank anyone, all while paying for the privilege, all while entirely defended by the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ devs who get paid to allow it. You can sit on a nail, eat glass, and derive more value from that pain than this absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ will ever give you, unless you like being a troll who gatecamps, then this game is absolutely for you and as long as you pay for omega on your 10 alts and the devs will give you the fondest fellatio to be a cancer cell.
I've been playing on and off since ALPHA in 2002. The game was much much better back then, now it's almost entirely multi boxxing bots. for over 10 years now curse is nothing but vexor bots. CCP refuses to do anything about it. Game is ruined for normal players when botters ruin the market. They refuse to make the game playable for normal people
So after 10-15 year hiatus, I decided to try to get my account back up and see how things have changed. Within a week this is what the game and it's community provided: 1.) My old character was unplayable because all of the things I earned before the Plex system are now under the omega pass restriction. * No higher level weapons, ships, or upgrades 2.) I created a new character to go through they new player friendly tutorial. * The rewards were nice but with people actively ganking, you will loss everything quickly * The combat mission system was overly dangerous in the beginning with absolute junk payouts. * The mining missions paid well but I lost two ships within three days. If it wasn't for the previous Plex I had the character would have been stuck in a cruiser. 3.) When talking with others about experiencing the ganking being almost constant, I was told well you have to be on your toes at all times. 4.) I will not pay a monthly fee to be fed upon by others. The game rewards bad behaviors. The people that kill your stuff are also the people you buy replacements from. Because they make sure you can mine what you need to build your own. The TLDR of it: If you like games like Rust, where most players goals is to steal or destroy your stuff, then EVE is for you. If you are looking for a CO-OP game, this isn't it. This is why their player base is so low. And I know the fanboys will say cry more. I say, not my money or time ever again.
I hope that one day Eve online goes the way of old school runescape to keep it's players honest and humble
If you want to get destroyed in a split second by the cash cows of the game over and over while trying to travel somewhere, you have come to the right place. Yes the PVP newbie ganks are the HELL in this game for new players. You can do gas hauling and trading or fixed courses for some time but there are more exciting things and to get to those is really tricky with the trollers unless you join a good guild and find people who would join you and cover for you. At least that was my experience. But what i really wanted was to go solo explorer which is possible in paper but not with all these trash players who has nothing better to do but constantly hit solo players even on mid sectors. Apologies about the wrong terms if I have used, it has been a while since I came back to the game, to be disappointed again sadly ofc. In my opinion Elite Dangerous is a better alternative game.
I don't think I've ever posted a review for any game before so that should hopefully mean something. EVE is something incredible and really special. Every time I pick it back up I end up playing longer than the time before. There is ONE major problem though. Eventually, if you want to really make serious growth in the game you will want to multibox. I for the first time in 10+ years did this. Since I am good at microing, (thank you old starcraft days), I was hit with an automated ban...The lack of any communication, slow investigating process, and expectation that this could take weeks to resolve is completely unacceptable for paying players... yet somehow when I talk to people who this happens to they all just kind of accept that this is business as usual for the company... SO yes the game is absolutely incredible...but is gimped by its horrible automated player support systems. If this review spurs some action on a GM side to actually do something I would consider changing this review. Ticket # 2680484...Though i'm not confident even after they confirmed no violations that this doesn't happen again...until then NO I would not recommend this game
