Escape from the Black Monolith

It's a really good little game; I find it simple to play, and the lack of checkpoints makes me want to try again every time. The random boss mechanic keeps the game from feeling too repetitive, and I like being able to choose which boss to face based on the item drop. One minor downside, though, is that weird creature that eats you if you turn around; I feel the warning at the top isn't visible enough. Overall, I’d recommend this free-to-play game to anyone who enjoys fast-paced games.

It's so close to being a fun game, but at the same time, there are some ridiculously unfun mechanics that completely ruin it. The game has permadeath and various jank and BS that kills you, which is a terrible combination. Don't turn around, you will instantly die. Due to the way enemies move and muscle memory from pretty much every other shooter in existence, you will turn around occasionally. You will die immediately with no way to avoid it and have to restart the game from the beginning. Movement is extremely restricted in a very unintuitive way. Almost every death was due to running into invisible walls while trying to evade projectiles. How am I supposed to know how to dodge bullet hell barrages if I don't even know where I'm allowed to move? Enemies can hit you from off screen. Combined with the bad camera and thick clouds that make enemies invisible, it's really easy to get randomly shot and not know what hit you. You hit E to progress text boxes instead of space bar or left click. This isn't remotely on the same level as the bad gameplay, but it's annoying. There's no option for instant text loading or skipping conversations you've already seen. Since the game has permadeath and chatty bosses with incrementally loading text, it gets annoying fast. I think all my other complaints are bundled with the permadeath and how cheap and easy deaths are. Combat feels overly simplistic and enemies are basic and repetitive, but that's probably because I kept replaying the first few minutes of the game over and over. Still, since that's apparently the intended experience, I think it's a valid issue. I did really like the graphical style and overall theme of the game. Combat was fun and interesting on my first run until I randomly died by running into an invisible wall while trying to evade some bullet spam. The game has potential, but it's way too rough and flawed to be anything but frustrating in its current state.

Fun game - looking forward to escape the mind control of the black monolith, even if only within the confines of this game :)

A fun little game with some interesting gameplay ideas, the soundtrack and atmosphere are really great too, it's definitely worth checking out ! I would have liked to see a bit more progression or a roguelite ingredient to make it easier to learn, but maybe that will come in a future update.
